Background/History:Zane, originally named Teddy, was born as the younger of two brothers in 2481 on the planet Boros to Neal and Patricia Wilder. Their parents were wealthy, and both worked for the Alliance. Different from what one might think, Zane had never been treated as the nestling of the family, at least not in the way of getting benefited by that. Instead, he always had to follow in Niles' - his five years older brother's - footsteps to be seen as equal. The shoes belonging to these footsteps, unfortunately though, were far too big for him to fill out with the little feet he got born with. Unlike Niles, Zane was far from getting called a bouncing boy. Not only was he simply not interested in sports nor any physical activities in general, but he also suffered from a lot of allergies and a physical condition that was yet unknown but came with similar symptoms like asthma and some other known autoimmune diseases.
His parents had never made a secret of their wish to convert Zane to somebody being more like their other son, which led to them not having a good relationship. Zane, however, started to see an even deeper plot behind it, a theory having its beginning from the day on that he was born. While they had named his brother Niles, after their father Neil - as Niles meant no less but "son of Neil" -, Zane had always seen merely the name they had originally given him as a mockery. And while that certainly hadn't been their intention, it still wouldn't stop other kids from using it against him, especially since he was no one being able to take a joke. The slight stammer in his voice whenever feeling uncomfortable or nervous, which could be called a permanent condition in his childhood and teenage years, gave others another reason for mockery. Soon he became a loner, probably ascribing that mostly to anyone but himself though, because of interpreting mockery and rejection into any actions that might have never meant that way, at least not right from the start. At some point then, he got rid of the name Teddy and gave himself the name Zane, yet nobody but himself ever used that name for him, at least not as long as he still lived in their family home, which he saw as another rejection of his person.
There had been times, however, in which Zane actually tried to build rapport with Niles at least, although there might have been a different reason for that. Unlike other boys his reached age, he never came up with an interest in girls but instead in his brother's best friend Aidan. Not only was this out of the norm but Zane also too shy and awkward to reveal his feelings. When, one day, his brother thought it was funny to steal his diary, making fun of the fact that he was writing one in the first place, and to read it out loud while Aidan was around as well, the revelation had been no longer a question of courage, however. Niles surely hadn't been aware of what he was reading until the very moment he did, yet Zane never forgave him, not even when Niles reached out to him at a time they both had been growing older and wiser, coming up with a sincere apology, saying that they had been only kids. Anyways, from that day on in the past, Zane had never tried to build rapport again - with anybody.
During the War of Unification, the Wilder family was, of course, supporting the Alliance, yet Zane had never really been interested in politics and in choosing any side but the one of science. However, science was something in the hands and financed by the Alliance, so he had never questioned their affiliation, unlike his brother Niles, who became more and more a fighter on his own, unsure on which side he was seeing himself or if he chose one at all.
When Zane reached the age of 16, one of his little DIY science experiments caused a fire at their family home in the middle of the night. Rushing out of the room to wake his parents - Niles had been on a trip somewhere on another planet to do whatever was his thing lately -, Zane suddenly stopped in front of the door. This had been an accident and not his fault, not on purpose. It wouldn't make a murderer out of him if he looked after himself first, too afraid to stay in the house any longer - an explanation everyone would believe coming from a teenager. And so Zane turned, leaving the door to his parents' bedroom closed. Watching the flames from outside of the house, with a silent wish on the lips that the doors would stay closed, they actually did. And by the time the firefighters arrived, there would be nothing left from their bodies but dust and ash, with a dark secret underneath. Niles never found out the truth about what led their parents to die, while Zane never regretted his decision of having moved no finger for their rescue. He had never felt loved by them anyway, for they had only love to share for his brother. Or that was at least what he thought to be the truth -
his truth. In his eyes, they had deserved to die.
After the fire and the funeral of their parents being over, the two brothers departed for good, both turning toward their own path of life. But while Niles probably just stopped thinking about his brother too much, Zane couldn't help but ponder over the many occasions of the past that his brother had used to make him feel bad. Or maybe that all just surfaced again as soon as this feeling of straightened justice, arisen at the moment Zane had been watching their house in flames, knowing their parents still inside, vanished from him with the time passing on. It had been giving him a rare moment of inner satisfaction that he had never felt before. And so, even after - thanks to their parents' heritage and Niles' decision to refuse it for some reason - having been accepted into one of the best research institutions, run by Blue Sun Corporation, Zane couldn't stop reminiscing about this ecstatic feeling as if about a lost love.
Eventually, realizing that no accomplishment in his life could ever make him feel anywhere near that, Zane stopped resisting and instead devoted himself to what he started to see as
his turn in this unfair life full of people who had been looking down their noses at him. Knowing that there was this one person that could serve him with the same feeling that had come over him when he watched his parents die, Zane started to locate his brother Niles, not expecting that it would take years to seek him out. When he found out that his brother had become a famous bounty hunter, Zane gave up on the idea of killing him with his own hands. Instead, his plan was to instruct others to do so for him. Unfortunately, no bounty hunter was willing to accept an order from him, for not even those would take him seriously, and the few who did weren't good enough to be successful.
And then there came a day, after seven years of failing to find someone who would kill his brother for him, that Zane received the news of Niles Wilder having found dead somewhere on the planet Beaumonde, killed by the hands of another bounty hunter, a man carrying the same last name for some reason. Dex Wilder. Zane was impressed, to say the least. Yet, even though he was glad that somebody had set things right for him, the ecstatic feeling was not as ecstatic as expected, lasting no longer than for a little while. He doubted that it was because he hadn't seen his brother die since the mere knowledge about justice having set things right had always been enough for him. Still though, he needed more. This time, the sobering feeling following right after the ecstasis was even worse, almost as if it was a drug his body had started to require. Actually, there were enough people on his mind who deserved death. He just needed somebody who could serve him with the physical strength that he didn't have, to take revenge on those who had been making jokes of him in the past, or even still nowadays. This could be a long list being somebody who saw mockery and rejection in any little action of others. There happened to be, however, some names that he managed to cross off that list himself, rather by random happenstances though. Like the one where a coworker of his had been ending up killing himself because he confused a harmless chemical substance with another, not so harmless one. What a sad tragedy. Zane had liked him, really, just not the fact that he had found out his real name was Teddy, thinking it would be funny to make a joke of that while there were a few assistants around.
Along with his career at Blue Sun, Zane made the working through his list of names another task on his way to create the life that he thought to deserve. Soon, he had to learn though, that his career was, due to his lack of giving a good account of himself, at a dead end. He wanted to be more than just a number in the team of lab workers. He wanted to become someone people would not only respect but also look upon. If fear was the only way to get there, then so be it. And so he allowed his hunger for power and knowledge leading to more illegal paths to guide him, which finally brought him in touch with the Hands of Blue. A small group of people, most of them working in the rows of Blue Sun, experimenting on living humans with special gifts regarding their mental capacity, a field that was to change science forever. And not only science but also the persons repute behind. The ones who always had to live a life in the shadows of others. Just like himself. Unlike the average of this groups' members though, Zane wanted something more than only fame. He wanted what
they had. Their gift. Something that would allow him to be much more than he was, more than just a great mind. A splendid mind. And a cure to his physical conditions. But before he could even think of that, there still had to be made a lot of experiments with a more satisfying rate of success.
It was not before some more years later, ten actually, that Zane suddenly had to think again of the bounty hunter who had gotten arrested for the murder of his brother. By that time, having made himself a name in the rows of the Hands of Blue, Zane had enough influence to give the instruction of cutting Dex Wilder's - Zane was still curious to learn about the reason for sharing the last name - arrest short by making an agreement. He was very careful when it came to personal contact with his contractors, one reason why he never talked to Dex himself. Another reason was to test that man's willingness and loyalty - as loyalty as a bounty hunter could be, that was. He just couldn't risk showing his face to somebody as strong and dangerous as Dex had proved to be without making sure that he'd be on his side and not to face as an opponent in the end.
However, the moment that Zane - for people belonging to the Hands of Blue, same as for any contractors, only known as Dr. Zed - sent him on a mission to find and deliver the gifted Wendy Carter, one of the Alliance's best secret weapons, was the moment that he knew they would get to know each other at some point. As much as Zane feared that day, as much was he looking forward to it. He needed to learn everything about his brother's death, not to blame his murderer but actually to celebrate him, first of all, though, to potentially experience a bit of this ecstatic feeling he longed for - through Dex's telling. A day, coming much sooner as Zane even had dared to believe.
It reached his ears that one of his early retired coworkers, someone who always had been talked about as not being pro-Alliance, was going to secretly meet with this very subject for reasons he wasn't aware of yet. But he would find out. While, in Zane's eyes, everyone else had been mistaking Wendy Carter to have gained her full potential already long ago, he knew better. There always was more potential lying underneath. And that he would prove...
Gained much more self-confidence over the years of operating missions from the background, Zane is nowadays only playing a role when appearing as Doctor Zane Wilder, the queer and nerdy guy that everyone knows working in one of the biotech facilities located on Osiris, while, at the same time, nobody knows what he does when he's not working - probably not coming home to a wife and children judging by his awkwardness.

Note: Don't stress searching for gifs. I'll be doing that sometime later since I know it's not so easy to find Neil Patrick Harris gifs where he isn't wearing a suit, lol.
