"Ruby you shouldn't sell yourself short, you would be greatly missed if you were to ever leave here. I mean who's smile would brighten up everyone of my mornings when I come in here. Who is Granny going to leave this place to and have to keep her company? Ruby it doesn't matter what you do in live as long as you don't neglect your death, if you want to move to Long Island and sell hot dogs then move to Long Island and sell hot dogs. The point of it all is to have fun with it and do it to the best of your ability. Be inspired by all walks of life."
"Be inspired." Ruby repeated to herself. It was worth a try. And though she still wasn't certain that she really made much of a difference in the grand scheme of Storybrooke, it still felt good to hear it. She looked up at Kitt, "You know, you're really good at this whole making people feel better thing?"

"You know, you're really good at this whole making people feel better thing?"
I smiled at Ruby as her disposition seemed to slightly change for the better "No body deserves to miss out on their happy ending. If everyone stopped smiling the world would be a little less brighter so I just do what I can."

Ruby smiled and put her hand on his, "You have a really interesting outlook on life, Kitt Walker. I think I'm going to like getting to know more about it."
"Hey Ruby! How 'bout you stop flirting and get me my coffee?" The gruff voice of Leroy cut in.
Ruby felt the heat start to rise in her cheeks, "I guess that's my cue to get back to work."

"I guess that's my cue to get back to work."
"I guess I really should let you back to it then, go and brighten up his day." I gave her a smile before finishing my coffee. I stand and shoot her once last smile "Remember if you need anything don't hesitate to call, I mean it." And with that I left looking foward to our date later on that night.

Ruby watched as he left, the smile still on her face. The end of her shift couldn't come fast enough. But now, back to work. "Alright Leroy, hold your horses and I'll get your coffee."

Ruby pulled off her apron the minute her afternoon shift coverage arrived. It was a bit after her projected 4:00 end time and she felt a little guilty that she wouldn't be able to spend as much time with Granny before leaving to get ready for her date. She was suddenly extra glad that Mary Margaret had agreed to check on the old women. At the same time, Ruby felt butterflies swarming around in her stomach at the thought of seeing Kitt. It was an odd sensation that she couldn't ever remember having with any of the other men she had dated before... Of course, Ruby had also never dated someone like Kitt before. Ruby rushed out of the diner.

***Charlotte enters, first scene of new day***
Charlotte aunt's had been talking last night about the Widow Lucas being in hospital and her granddaughter, Ruby, running the diner alone. Charlotte had no idea that the friend she'd just made last night was dealing with not only her grandmother's health scare but trying to run a diner on her own. She got up extra early and headed straight to the diner after a couple hours at the bakery.
Charlotte walked behind the buildings until she reached the alley next to the diner. She was careful to keep her head down and the hood of her jacket on. Now here she was at the door of the diner, trying to work out the logistics of opening the door while holding three boxes of freshly baked pie.

Marcus Sadler had a routine, and it didn't begin with breakfast at the diner even if Ruby and her decrepit old bear-skeleton of a grandmother thought it did. It began with watching. Marcus sat in his car and watched people for a little while; it was like gazing at the ocean. Oddly calming in it's predictability, and a good...a lovely smell.
So when he saw someone new, he hopped out of his car quickly and eagerly. A fresh face was something very rare in Storybrooke, and he quickly moved in. "Let me help you there," he said, his expression spreading into his usual coat-hanger grin. He remembered when he'd smiled at Leroy, and the drunk bastard had been refreshingly - but annoyingly - honest.
"Sadler, when you show those pearly whites, it's like lookin' at broken glass or somethin'. Makes me want to damn well scream."
He grabbed the top two boxes, hugging them against his chest. As usual, he was wrapped in a sharp suit of dark and white with a splash of red in the form of his tie. "Don't want to go dropping anything, especially when it smells so good," he said, backing against the door to open it and dipping his head slightly to get a better look at the face beneath the hood. He was too experienced as a lawyer to let the mixture of shock and arousal he was feeling show on his face. She was beautiful, that was obvious...but there was something else there too.
Innocence.

Once noticed by an individual, it didn't make much sense to her to keep her head down and avoid eye contact. She figured it would only draw more curiosity. Charlotte looked up at the man. "Thank you, sir," she said, adding a beaming smile of thanks as she walked past him.
Charlotte carefully glanced around for Ruby, avoiding eye contact with any of the few patrons at this early hour, but did not see her. Guessing Ruby was probably in the back, Charlotte put the pie down on the counter and took a seat on one of the bar stools to wait, glancing over at the man who assisted her.

"You're quite welcome. I'm Marcus, by the way," "I haven't seen you in town before."
"Nice to meet you, Marcus. I'm Charlotte," she said, reaching out and shaking his hand. "I'm new to town."
No sign of Ruby yet and the double layers she wore for the chilly morning walk over was becoming uncomfortable in the cozy warmth of the diner. Charlotte removed her jacket and placed it neatly on the empty chair next to her. She pulled the sleeves of her favorite blue cardigan down over her palms, nervously playing with the hems as she tried her hand at small talk. "I met Ruby yesterday and promised her I'd stop by today."

"Well, I'm glad you did. Always nice to see a new face, especially one as beautiful as yours," said Marcus.

*Enters from Kitt's Cabin*
Ruby rushed through the backdoor of the diner, her face flushed. She knew without checking her watch that she was late. Falling asleep in the treehouse had seemed like a great idea at the time, but without the aid of an alarm she didn't wake up until ten minutes before she was due at the diner. After a frantic run back to the B&B to change out of her wrinked, slept in date clothes- there were enough town slut jokes floating around without her adding fuel to the fire- she finally made it in twenty minutes after her shift started.
"Nice of you to join us, Ruby!" Tony called from his spot at the grill with a suggestive grin, "Had a busy night last night, huh? Who's the lucky guy?"
Ruby made a face at the cook as she grabbed her apron off a rack on the wall. "Shut up, Tony. I just slept late, that's all."
"Ohhhh, someone's grumpy this morning.
And she was. She snuck out without waking Kitt up. Why, she didn't even really know. She was fine the night before. The overwhelming feelings of panic didn't hit until she woke up, only fragmented memories of her dreams remaining. Dreams that, as far as she could tell, involved her and Kitt but not as her and Kitt and all she could really remember was how real they had felt. And then she just left him there, without a word. Apparently the saying about old habits was true. But now that she was away, she was starting to feel guilty. She screwed up, yet again. Maybe she could make it up to him...
But now it was time to work. Ruby pushed through the kitchen doors into the main eating area and jumped right into the business of a morning at the diner, refilling coffees and taking orders. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a familiar blonde head sitting at the counter and couldn't help but smile. Charlie had actually shown up. Ruby almost thought she wouldn't. Once she caught up on everything, she could go talk. But for now, duty called.

"Well, I'm glad you did. Always nice to see a new face, especially one as beautiful as yours,"
"Thank you," Charlotte said shyly and quickly looked down at her hands, letting her hair fall forward to cover her blushing. She was at a loss as to what to do or say next. Idle chatter was okay but she was afraid that Marcus was beginning to take too much of an interest in her. She glanced at the door to the kitchen as it opened and saw Ruby rush to take orders. It looked like she'd be busy for awhile. Maybe it was best she leave.
She spotted an order sheet and pen on the counter behind the bar. "I should get going. I'll just leave her a note," she said as she stood on the bar footstool and leaned over, grabbing the order sheet and pen.

With instinctive authority, Marcus calmly placed his hand over hers. "Don't be ridiculous, I'm sure she'd love to see you," he said. "You're from the bakery, right? I'm in law enforcement myself."

Startled, Charlotte looked down at his hand covering hers. "The pies are from the bakery," she said evasively. "I'd love to stay but Ruby is busy and I... have a prior engagement." She slowly drew her hand out from under his.
Lying was not Charlotte's strong suit as she rarely found herself in a situation where it was necessary; until her recent betrayal of her promise to her aunts to remain at the bakery and avoid strangers.

"Aw, c'mon, sweetheart. I'm not a bad guy," said Marcus, lying fluently. "Hey, you can go if you want to. But it's not such a scary world."

Charlotte felt guilty for giving him the impression she thought he was a 'bad guy'. He'd been a gentleman, helping her carry the pies in, opening the door for her, complimenting her. He was in law enforcement which, in her limited experience of the world outside her books, she automatically equated as the 'good guys'. And he was a handsome man who'd just called her sweetheart.
Charlotte glanced at the clock and relaxed into her seat, smiling shyly. "I guess I can spare a few more minutes."

In his mind, the situation had already played out and reached it's conclusion. This new girl was a combination of beauty and uncertainty, two things that went together very well for Marcus. Somewhere out on the edges of his imagination, he was feasting on her lovely body like a lunatic and wrapping himself up in her soft yellow hair.
"Cool," he grinned. "Well, glad to meet you, Charlotte. Been in town for long?"

Aidan sat alone in a both in the corner, out of sight out of mind. He sat lengthways along the sat with his feet planted flat along the seat with his knees up. Aidan sat and read 'We are fragmented into so many different aspects. We don't know who we really are, or what aspects of ourselves we should identify with or believe in. So many contradictory voices, dictates, and feelings fight for control over our inner lives that we find ourselves scattered everywhere, in all directions, leaving nobody at home.' His eyes drifted over the page and looked across the room towards Charlie and Marcus, no doubt the wrong type of friend Mr. Gold had 'warned' Aidan about her having. Aidan knew his reputation as abit of a slime bucket and had had very little to do with him, only venturing near him when it was needed. Aidan sat, watched and waited for his moment to 'play the hero' as he had been ordered to.

Ruby filled up her last few refills. Finally a free moment! She turned back towards the counter and was startled to realize that Charlie wasn't sitting alone. The girl had seemed pretty much a loner, if not by choice than by practice. Well good for her, getting out there and meeting new people! But as Ruby came closer and got a better view of Charlie's countertop companion, a block of ice settled into her stomach. Marcus Sadler was chatting up her new friend. Now, Ruby didn't normally put much stock in rumors. Being at the wrong end of them tended to make a person wary. But Marcus was a special case. She could practically feel the slime dripping off of him from where she stood across the room and even after just her limited contact with him through the diner, she was certain he was capable, if not guilty, of everything she had ever heard about him.
Without thinking, Ruby quickly approached the counter and set down the coffee pot, "Hey Charlie!" The smile she put on for Charlie's benefit faded a little as she glanced over at Marcus, "Is this guy bothering you?"

Marcus sighed deeply and resisted the urge to pince the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Good morning to you too, Ruby," he said with a forced smile that didn't come close to reaching his eyes. "I was just chatting with Charlotte here."

"Is this guy bothering you?"
Charlotte was thrown by the odd question. she noticed Ruby's smile falter and looked between the two. "No," she said hesitantly before looking back to Ruby questioningly. Was there something she was missing?
"Good morning to you too, Ruby," "I was just chatting with Charlotte here."

"Good morning to you too, Ruby," "I was just chatting with Charlotte here."
Ruby crossed her arms, shifting into a protective stance beside Charlie. From their conversation the night before, Ruby gathered that the girl hadn't been exposed to many people and there was no way that she was going to let Marcus take advantage of that.
"Maybe you should find someone else to chat with, Marcus." Ruby replied pointedly.

That struck a nerve but Ruby quickly covered any trace of it. Bouncing right back with a scathing, "Unfortunately, even my low standards are high enough to not get involved with you. Leave Charlie alone."

Charlotte was in momentary shock over the sudden change in Marcus. "How dare you insult my friend's virtue, sir," she said sternly as she stood up. "I have nothing further to chat with you about." Charlotte turned her back to him to grab her jacket.

Marcus laughed. "Sweetie, you can't insult something that isn't there," he explained. "Besides, I've been told. Fine."
He'd struck out; it wasn't a huge deal in the grand scheme (although he tried not to think about the fact he might never taste the blonde), but still put him in a slightly darker mood. Marcus stood, and looked over at Ruby.
His relationship with Ruby's grandmother wasn't especially friendly, but there was some measure of respect between the two. Marcus did like the diner, despite a slight enmity with the sinfully sexy waitress. Like his standing with the town itself, Marcus and the diner were symbiotic. "The usual, Ruby. Bacon and scrambled eggs, cup of black coffee..." His thoughts turned to Cora for a moment. "...and a cranberry juice with a few pancakes. No spitting in the food, you know I check. If I even suspect tampering, you know very well that I'll sue this place so hard your grandchildren will need lawyers."
Marcus Sadler turned back to Charlotte, and gave a little mock bow. "Ma'am," he said, and strode over to a corner table.

"Sweetie, you can't insult something that isn't there," "Besides, I've been told. Fine."
The muscles in Ruby's jaw ached from how hard she set them. She knew that she shouldn't take any of Marcus' comments to heart but her own damn insecurities still made the words sting much more than she wanted them to. After all, most rumors were based in truth somewhere and it was definitely true that Ruby was no stranger to waking up in different beds.
"The usual, Ruby. Bacon and scrambled eggs, cup of black coffee..." "...and a cranberry juice with a few pancakes. No spitting in the food, you know I check. If I even suspect tampering, you know very well that I'll sue this place so hard your grandchildren will need lawyers."
Ruby rolled her eyes. As if she'd ever actually spit in someone's food. Obviously, working in food service, there is always the temptation but to actually do it was just gross. She plastered on a sardonic smile before shooting back, "Oh darn. I guess you just foiled my plan. Because you asked oh so nicely, spit-free food coming up."
As Marcus walked away, Ruby turned to Charlie. Her bravado was quickly fading and the sardonic smile instantly became a bit sheepish, "I'm sorry about that. I just didn't want you to fall into Marcus' clutches. He isn't really the kind of guy you want around...But thanks for defending me like that." Ruby glanced down, not really succeeding in banishing the bitter hurt in her voice as she finished, "I have my own reputation around here and apparently it makes really good ammunition."

Charlotte frowned at his retreating form. She'd finally met one of the kinds of people her aunts had warned her about. And to think she'd started getting all mooney-eyed over him.
"I'm sorry about that. I just didn't want you to fall into Marcus' clutches. He isn't really the kind of guy you want around...But thanks for defending me like that." "I have my own reputation around here and apparently it makes really good ammunition."
"No, I'm sorry that you had to throw yourself into the line of fire to protect me. He'd seemed like such a nice man." She reached out and squeezed Ruby's hand to emphasize her gratitude. "Thank you, Ruby. You're a good friend." The empty pie display case on the counter next to Ruby caught Charlotte's attention. "Oh, I heard that your Gran is sick and that you're running the diner on your own. I made you some pies for your cases."
