Ruby felt exhausted as she went through the motions of preparing for the morning rush at the diner with even less grace than usual. As she dropped an entire bin of cutlery, she could almost hear Granny's barbed chiding about how a bull in a china shop would be comparable to a hungover Ruby in the diner... of course, this particular morning too much alcohol was not the cause of the mayhem being inflicted on the silverware settings.
She was supposed to be on her way to Boston. Not in the diner, not in Storybrooke, not in Maine at all. Yet here she was, after spending the entire night at Storybrooke General Hospital. A heart attack. The old woman had a heart attack just hours before Ruby was to be on her way to freedom. A part of Ruby almost believed that she had done it on purpose, out of spite. The anger and rage caused by that thought was a much more pleasant emotion that the fear, uncertainty and guilt laying beneath it so that was what Ruby focused on as she slammed down a fresh pot of coffee, cursing under her breath as drops of the hot liquid sloshed out of the top and scalded her hand.

Mary Margaret closed the door behind her, glancing around the diner before hopping onto one of the barstools. Even though being a schoolteacher required her to be a morning person, she wouldn't be fully alert until she'd gotten a cup of coffee. Her brow furrowed in concern as she noticed the tall brunette behind the counter struggling with the coffee pot. "You okay, Ruby?" she asked. "Tough morning, huh?"

"You have no idea." Ruby grumbled, shaking her stinging hand before pouring Mary Margaret's usual morning coffee. Ruby set the mug in front of Mary Margaret and leaned on the counter. She still had a good ten minutes before the morning rush began. "Granny is in the hospital. I came right from there to open up because, even in the hospital, all she can think about is the diner. Did you want anything else with your coffee this morning, Mary Margaret?"

"No, no, I'm good," she said quickly, shifting the focus off herself. Though she admired Ruby for having the strength to be here at all when her only family was sick enough to be in the hospital. "I'm so sorry to hear that. What happened?"

Ruby began toying with a stray napkin on the counter so she wouldn't have to look Mary Margaret in the eye. "Heart attack." Even though they weren't especially close, there was always something about talking with Mary Margaret that made all of her carefully crafted walls fall down. Today was definitely not the day to let that happen. "I was packing for Boston and she came in to, once again, try to talk me out of leaving. And then she just... froze for a minute and collapsed. The doctors said she should be alright as long as she keeps her stress down and sticks to a special diet... she'll be out of commission for a while though." <And so will any plans of leaving.> Ruby silently added to herself.

Her gasp of surprise at Granny's heart attack progressed into an empathetic look. "Well, I guess it's not as bad as it could have been," she offered. "Sounds like the doctors are hopeful for a full recovery." Not that that time would be easy on Ruby, having to look after the diner and the inn by herself. And the girl already wanted to get out of town so badly. Now she would be stuck here out of a sense of duty. Mary Margaret never really thought about the world outside of Storybrooke; why would she? But she could understand how someone as vibrant and adventurous as Ruby would.
"I have my shift at the hospital after work. I'll be glad to check in on your grandmother," she said. "And if there's anything that I can do, please don't hesitate to ask."

Ruby forced what she hoped looked like a genuine smile, "I'm sure she'd really appreciate that. Thanks Mary Margaret." Noticing some other morning regulars passing through the front door, Ruby pushed away from the counter and quickly set to work preparing drinks and sending food orders back to the kitchen. She already knew what they would be- asking was more a formality than anything. "So, how are the inmates at the elementary school?"

"Restless, as always," she answered, taking a moment to pour some sugar in her coffee and stir it. "I thought they would like C.S. Lewis. Evil witches and epic battles. Apparently, it's not stimulating enough."
She took a sip from the mug and placed it back down on the counter. "Parent-teacher conferences are later this week, which means Madam Mayor will be gracing my classroom with her presence," she said. "I feel bad for Henry, under all that pressure, but at least she's there for him."

"I don't know how the kid takes living with Il Duce. Even my limited interaction with her makes me want to rupture my own eardrums," she grimaced and picked up table five's order from the kitchen window. "No wonder he's by himself all the time."
The diner was starting to fill up with patrons and as Ruby ran the food over to table five, she ended up stopping to take three more orders before she made it back to Mary Margaret. "Do you want more coffee?"

"No, I'm good. And I should be getting to work anyway," she said, sliding her cup back across the counter and making sure to leave a more generous tip than usual. She slid off the stool and pulled her bag over her shoulder. "Your grandmother's a strong woman, Ruby; I'm sure she'll be okay. Remember, call me if you need anything."

"Thanks Mary Margaret. I will." Ruby gave her a smile before turning to a couple flagging her down at the other end of the counter.

After my morning ritual (and getting dressed into some jeans and a t-shirt that may be too tight) I enter town and make my way to Granny's Dinner, the finest cup of joe this side of Chicago. I enter the store and take a look around as usual the locals are in the same booths having the same orders as the day before. I sit down at the counter and smile at the waitress, "How is my favorite waitress doing today Ruby?"

Ruby couldn't help the grin that appeared on her face as she saw the fine specimen of a man seated at her counter.
"Even better now that you're here," she replied with a suggestive wink. Kitt Walker was not only handsome, but he kept his hands to himself- much appreciated after some of her other male customers. "What can I get you, Kitt?"

"What can I get you, Kitt?"
"I would love a cup of your world famous home blend." I joked. I liked Ruby I really did though she always seemed reluctant to live up to her potential, maybe it was just me but I couldn't help but think if she believed in herself as much as she doubted she could be utterly amazing. I took out my wallet and put a few notes on the counter "Keep the change Ruby..." I said probably over tipping but her service was always worth it, "So how is our dear old Granny doing?"

"So how is our dear old Granny doing?"
Ruby's smile faltered slightly but she did her best to hide it. "She's in the hospital. Dr. Whale said that it was a heart attack. The prognosis is hopeful though." She grabbed a clean coffee cup and filled it from the pot of freshly brewed coffee. "And she was already arguing with me from her hospital bed so I took that as a good sign. One cup of high quality liquid lightening for the handsome gentleman." She set the cup in front of him.

As she placed the cup in front of me I grabbed her hand and lightly squeezed it,"Oh Ruby I'm so sorry. If there is anything you need just let me know and I'll be more then happy to help out." Despite the fact that Ruby and her Granny got along like cats and dogs I could tell just how much Granny truly meant to Ruby.

"I'll keep that in mind, Kitt. Thanks. I just hope that she is out in time to handle rent collection, I hate dealing with Mr. Gold." Ruby gave a mock shiver, trying to lighten the mood. She really appreciated the outpouring of kindness the situation was bringing, but it was almost too much for her already loaded emotions to handle and she couldn't lose it at the diner. Of course they had plenty of coverage now that she had opened up but going home to the empty B&B didn't sound appealing.

I could be mistaken but it looked like Ruby had become paler than usual, today can't be easy for her. "How about you coming over to my place tonight, I'll cook and wait on you for once. Get your mind off everything and don't worry about Mr. Gold I'll go have a chat with him, I'm sure he can be reasonable..." I said the words but doubted their truthfulness and hoped that it didn't show in my voice.

Gold reasonable? That would be the day.... what a minute. Did Kitt just ask her out? Ruby looked at the man sitting at the counter in surprise. If any other guy had asked her, she would have assumed that they were just trying to take advantage of her current state of vulnerability but there was something different about Kitt... Something that made her feel like she could trust him completely. "Well, I should stop at the hospital after my shift but... that sounds great Kitt. What time should I come over?"

"What time should I come over?"
I mentally ran through a checklist in my head organizing my time for the day then allowing her time to see Granny. "I should be finished with the kids about 5:30 so how does seven o'clock sound?" Seeing as how it was still early morning that should give me plenty of time to do everything in the woods that needs doing, talk to Mr. Gold (which I am looking forward too...) and do some minor repairs on the tree houses.

"I should be finished with the kids about 5:30 so how does seven o'clock sound?"
Let's see, her shift was over at four- that gave her about two hours with Granny and then some time to spare to get ready... "Seven sounds perfect." Ruby replied with a smile. It had seemed impossible, but what had started as a horrible day was really starting to look up. "Oh, I guess one more important thing... I don't know where you live."

"Oh, I guess one more important thing... I don't know where you live."
I let out a slight laugh, "It's not too far, I live in...cabin in the woods and I swear its not as creepy as it sounds. All you have to do is take the main trail then you'll see a path with a big no entry sign and that will take you directly to my cabin. If you get lost just give me a call and I will come to your rescue."

Ruby raised an eyebrow at him, "Why Kitt, how very axe murderer of you." But she quickly followed it with a smile to show that she was joking. Ruby was no damsel in distress but she had to admit, the thought of Kitt coming to her rescue faintly stirred the butterflies currently taking up residence in her stomach. "I think I'll be able to find it."

"So you still intent on getting out of Storybrooke? Its not that bad here is it?"
"I was supposed to be gone as of this morning. Just me and the open road. Doesn't seem that's in the cards now though." The morning customers had begun to leave and there was plenty of time before lunch so with a sigh Ruby leaned on the counter. "It isn't that Storybrooke is bad it's just... I guess I expected life to be more exciting than this. I feel like there's this adventure out there, just waiting for me and I have no way of finding it." Ruby grinned ruefully, "Does that sound stupid? I mean, I'm not expecting to leave and find, like, knights and dragons-type of adventures. Just something that makes me feel like I've actually done something. What about you? Have you ever thought about what's outside of Storybrooke?"

"What about you? Have you ever thought about what's outside of Storybrooke?"
I couldn't lie that thought had crossed my mind more than once. "Yeah I guess its a natural instinct to want to go be free, find adventure, steal from the rich and give to the poor. But I just don't know if I could leave, the kids here need someone to talk to and is on there side, the woods need someone to look after them and Mr. Gold needs someone to stand up against him." I said with a smile "After all what would Darth Vader be without Luke? I don't think I could just leave here, I cant help but feel I'm needed here and it is where I belong. Don't take this the wrong way but are you unhappy here?" I ask as I was never to sure of the answer to this question.

Don't take this the wrong way but are you unhappy here?"
This made Ruby pause. No one had ever asked her that before. "Honestly, I never thought about it. I've always just been so ready to leave...but no. I don't think I'm unhappy here. I don't think I'm completely happy either, if that makes sense. Like something is missing but I'm not sure what it is." Ruby wrinkled her nose. "Now you're making me get all philosophical before lunch time. Besides, the town wouldn't miss me like it would miss you. You do so much good and someone needs to stand up to Gold."

"I know what you mean, It's like there was something there but now its gone..." I had always felt this longing for something but I never knew what for, the closest to that feeling I ever came was when I was helping people. "Ruby you shouldn't sell yourself short, you would be greatly missed if you were to ever leave here. I mean who's smile would brighten up everyone of my mornings when I come in here. Who is Granny going to leave this place to and have to keep her company? Ruby it doesn't matter what you do in live as long as you don't neglect your death, if you want to move to Long Island and sell hot dogs then move to Long Island and sell hot dogs. The point of it all is to have fun with it and do it to the best of your ability. Be inspired by all walks of life."
