***Wendy enters from Planet - New Melbourne - Sea Siren Bar***
WENDY
Wendy ran out of the bar, heading for the cover of the alleyways. The shooting pains in her head made it nearly impossible for her to concentrate on where she was going, let alone to even realize if she was being followed or not. She could feel her body and mind beginning to shut down in defiance of being pushed entirely too far. Wendy hit the call button of her earpiece, barely discerning Jax's voice through the pain. "Jax! Cover blown," she said as her running began to involuntarily slow. "In alleyways to the right of Sea Siren Bar." She ran the back of her hand under her nose and just as she'd feared, her nose was bleeding. She stumbled into another alleyway, knowing she couldn't go on much longer.
"Need shot," she said as the increasing shaking of her body made it impossible to stand. She crumpled to her knees and tried to open her locket for the extra pill but her hands were shaking too hard and at this point, the pill would be useless. With her last bits of strength, she looked around her for a sign as to where she was and squinted hard trying to make out the faded lettering of the back entrance of a now empty establishment through the pain hazing over her mind. With the last thread of control, she managed to get out, "Behind... Dragon Lounge."
Wendy fell back and her body convulsed as the seizure overtook her until she finally and gratefully slipped into unconsciousness.

JAX
He was in the middle of business with his client when he got the wave from Wendy. He knew he should've cancelled his appointment to watch her back, but before they'd even made it planetside she had convinced to keep it. So he cursed, then apologized to the handsome man in bed with him, offering to refund his money and reschedule at a later time with a discount. He quickly got out of bed and moved around the room, hastily putting on his clothes and heading out to find her.
When he made it to the alley she had mentioned, he saw her laying unconscious and quickly pulled the syringe case out of his back pocket. He knelt beside her and administered the shot, cursing under his breath while he waited for the drug to take affect.

***Pickett enters***
He rushed through the alleyways, his head turning every few seconds. "Wendy," he uttered, not really calling her. Just feeling how the name felt after so long.
Pickett travelled through the alleyways, doubling back and going around until he found her cradled in the arms of a familar face. Her lover, from way back. "What happened to her?" he asked, his expression changing as his eyes ran from Wendy to Jax. With Wendy, his face was softened into a compassionate, uncertain look. With Jax, he merely stared at the man as if he'd thrown a trout at him.

"She was meeting some folks." That was all Jax offered while he waited for the meds to kick in. He should've been there. There were dozens of clients he could take on to make up for one missed meeting, but there was only one Wendy and yet he wasn't there to watch her back like he should've been. He wanted to get her out of the alley and safe back to their hotel room, but until she was at least conscious, he didn't want to risk moving her. There was no telling what injuries she might have and he certainly was no doctor.

WENDY
Flashes of light and pain began to stab through the blissfully numbing darkness. She fought against consciousness but the potent drug running through her bloodstream was far stronger than her weakened body and state of her mind.
Wendy's eyes opened wide as she gasped in pain. It felt as if her head were going to explode and at this moment, she almost wished it would just to bring an end to the excruciating pain. She curled up in a ball against Jax, hiding her face in his chest to block out the light causing stabbing pains behind her eyes. Gradually, her breathing returned to normal and the pain ebbed to a dull throb. As soon as she was able to think coherently, she spoke. "My cover's been blown," she said into his shirt. Even if none of the officers had lived through the bloodbath to send a wave with their dying breath, the Alliance had eyes everywhere and word traveled fast. "I need to get off this planet. Fast."

Suddenly, everything became very simple. Something that was previously complex and emotionally difficult was...streamlined. Wendy was hurt. Wendy had to not be hurt anymore.
He leaned down next to Wendy and Jax. "I have a ship. We have a doctor, and we're not on Alliance radar right now. It'll be safe," he said in a calm, emotionless tone. "That's where we need to go. Now."

Jax eyed Pickett with suspicion. Now that Wendy seemed to be moderately conscious and he was less focused on getting her meds administered, he wondered why a random stranger would offer them an escape route and cover from the Alliance. For all he knew it could very well be a trap to get Wendy and that he would not allow. "Why would you help us?"

"I have a ship. We have a doctor, and we're not on Alliance radar right now. It'll be safe," "That's where we need to go. Now."
Unaware that someone else had been there, Wendy tensed at the sound of the voice but relaxed when she realized who it was. She looked toward him as he spoke so near, her eyes taking some time to adjust to the light until he came into focus. Her stubborn pride wanted to tell him where he could put his ship but her logic outweighed her pride, at least at this particular moment. Everything else could wait until they were safely away.
Wendy gave a single nod of agreement and reached for her vid screen lying on the ground next to her. She held onto it tight.
"Why would you help us?"
Wendy had spoken to Jax about Frank in the past so often that she'd forgotten Jax had never physically met Frank. "Jax, this is my childhood acquaintance," she said for lack of a better word, "Frank."

"Frank."
"In the flesh," he said. "And neither one of you have an exit strategy. I'm your best shot." Frank reached out to touch Wendy, but suddenly retracted his hand. It was strange, and awkward, and he wasn't sure why he'd done it. "So we gotta go. We gotta go now."

His eyes widened when Wendy told him who the stranger was. Frank Pickett was certainly not someone he'd ever thought to meet in person, let alone during a moment like this. He had all sorts of questions as to why that was, but for now, Wendy needed medical attention and they needed a getaway fast, so taking Pickett's offer was the only option.
"Which way's your ship?" He asked Frank, as he hauled Wendy up in his arms. It would be easier for him to carry her than to worry about whether she was okay enought to walk.

Wendy opened her mouth to stubbornly protest being carried but quickly shut it. She hated to appear weak in front of Frank but she still lacked the strength and coordination to walk on her own without stumbling and weaving. Wendy put an arm around Jax's shoulders and held tightly onto her vid screen with the other. She hid her face from onlookers and passersby in the crook of Jax's neck.

MOX
He had been trailing behind Dr. Utterson as she perused the market stalls, examining different herbs and explaining their importance in medicine. He just nodded and smiled as she piled more purchases into his arms.
"Mox, get to the ship. Now. Shit just got real."
Great, he groaned inwardly. They hadn't even been planetside for 24 hours. "Uh, Doc?" he began, trying to lift his head above the pile of parcels. "Just got a wave from Frank. Sounds like we've overstayed our welcome. Let's settle up and get back to the ship."

Mal
**Enters from Serenity Cargo Bay**
Mal walked down the ramp and halfheartedly dodged a mass of people going to and from various places. He didn't go far before he reached a terminal and he started punching the buttons on its screen. He located Monty's ship at the most secluded bay in the port of course. The guy was too careful sometimes to the point of being obvious. It didn't matter they would be out of here in no time and no one could peg his friend for having an empty hold. He dropped him an automated com letting him know once they got settled he would be over with the muscle.

Kaylee exited the cargo bay, a bright smile on her face and a parasol slung over her shoulder. She loved Serenity but after the long bout they'd been out in the black, it felt mighty good to be getting on some solid land. Even if it were just for a quick pick up and supply run.
After breakfast, she had spent some hours checkin' on Simon in the infirmary. Though he was all bandaged up and still hurtin', he was in pretty good spirits. Their encounter with Early was starting to just seem like some bad dream, for that Kaylee was especially glad. She caught a glimpse of Mal further down the docks and walked over to join him.
"Gettin' ready to go see Monty?" she asked, giving her parasol a little spin on her shoulder.

"Gettin' ready to go see Monty?" Kaylee asked, giving her parasol a little spin on her shoulder.
The captain was glad to see that glow back on the young mechanic's face. "Why yes, itchin to see if he's had a chance to regain some of his dignity, and his hair." Mal smiled, "Feel free to see to anything you can think of for the old gal while we're gone..." He waited a moment to see her frown. He made it a game sometimes to see if he could get a rise out of her and break that composure of hers. So long as he didn't go too far with it, it was all in good fun. "Unless you want to join us, I guess it could wait." he sighed and rolled his eyes.

Inara headed down the ramp after informing Wash that she'd be back before their job was done.
She tied her little string purse and wrapped it around her wrist, lost in thought as she headed for the nearest terminal. She took another glance back at the ship and sighed, hating the thought of leaving but things were becoming... complicated. She didn't like complicated. Inara had to at least look at her options. Maybe there wouldn't be any transport ships available at this time. A part of her hoped so. It wouldn't necessarily change what she thought she should do but a little postponement couldn't hurt.
She momentarily slowed as she spotted Mal and Kaylee at the terminal wondering if she should change directions but was spotted. She smiled and continued over as if it was her intention to find them and not the terminal.
She noticed in the simple gesture of the little twirls of her parasol that Kaylee was in better spirits and her ever-present smile was making a comeback. It made Inara smile in pure joy to see the Kaylee before all this hadn't been lost forever and Inara momentarily forgot her previous thoughts. "There you are. You're looking radiant, mei-mei."

"I do try! You know I had a really good night sleep and made sure before I went to bed to put those little fruit slices over my eyes." Mal ended that with a hand through his hair. Then he merely cocked his head to the side, his mouth a thin line. "How are you ambassador? Where are you off to this morning?"

Kaylee laughed and rolled her eyes good-naturedly, the mental image even making her forget to be annoyed at the Cap'n's dig at Serenity. Turning to Inara she replied, "I'm feelin' much better, jei-jei. Thanks to you."
"How are you ambassador? Where are you off to this morning?"
Kaylee looked back at Mal and then back at Inara, waiting to see what excitin' exploits the companion had for the afternoon that she could live vicariously through.

The sound of Kaylee's laughter made Inara forget her snarky rebuttal. It warmed her heart to hear it and she was actually appreciative of Mal's wise cracks.
"I'm feelin' much better, jei-jei. Thanks to you.
"Anything to hear that laugh again and see that smile that lights up a room." She glanced to Mal. "Just to clear up any further confusion, I'm referring to Kaylee," she said wryly.
"How are you ambassador? Where are you off to this morning?"
"Just some shopping," she said, letting her eyes quickly go to the terminal before returning to him as a subtle signal that she wanted to use it.

"I'm referring to Kaylee," Inara stated.
"I can take a hint," he said as he waited for a response to his last question. He wanted to hear her say it.
"Just some shopping," she clarified.
Shopping... Mal wondered just what she was shopping for. Probably not what she was expecting. "You know who loves shopping? Kaylee! Why don't you keep Inara company?" He waved off any protests. "You can meet us back on serenity, just in time for Monty too. If he thinks he isn't lifting a finger he's not getting off that easy," her move he thought as he just smirked.

"Shiny!" Kaylee exclaimed. Hmmm, what was that peculiar smirk on the Captain's face? "That is, if you don't mind Inara. I was fixin' to go into town to find somethin' for Simon anyway. You know, as a get well present. It'd be a lot more fun with some company!"
She really hoped that Inara agreed, she wanted her opinion on what to get for Simon. What was the best way to say, 'I really like you and you really like me even though you always put your foot in your mouth and won't make a move even after I make the first one and I'm really sorry that you got shot'? Kaylee didn't think they made gift cards for that.

"I would love the company. We'll find something nice for Simon." Inara looped her arm through Kaylee's and steered her toward the shops. She shot a you'll pay for that glare over her shoulder at Mal.
Inara walked in silence, lost in thought. Why had he done that? Why was he making an already difficult situation worse?

Inara looped her arm through Kaylee's and steered her toward the shops. She shot a look that the captain deciphered as you'll pay for that from over her shoulder at him. "Have fun you two," he chimed in as they turned and walked away. He continued to watch until they disappeared from sight. "I do believe she's planning to kill me," Mal said to himself and he turned and went to collect Zoe and Jayne.

Mal
The captain had collected his entourage from the ship and after a quick gear up they headed on their way. Mal didn't want Jayne bringing his whole damn armory but you never know what can happen so best to bring some hardware. The same went for Zoe and himself. Monty still hadn't responded yet but he knew the rendezvous. As they walked through the Marketplace he looked from face to face. Most people didn't look you in the eye and those that did just passed you by without so much as a nod. So many people passing through a port like this the residents rarely cared who you were or where you were from.
The place reeked of fish so it was only natural to see crates of them being processed and shipped out. He didn't know what he expected to see but for some reason he just felt uneasy all of a sudden. Was it because of his impending doom at the hands of Inara? She wouldn't show it but he knew her. She would be upset... That wasn't it though, this was something else... "Captain, where are the guards?" Zoe interrupted his thoughts as they approached the Gate to the pad Monty was supposed to have been waiting at. They were well past the hustle and bustle by now and there was no one in sight. There was always security on hand to keep paying captains property safe and sound... With a sigh Mal drew his gun, wondering what was waiting for them within.

The streets around the shops were bustling as they approached. Kaylee had been rambling about what she wanted to get for Simon, though she found she couldn't quite set her mind to any one thing. "Fresh fruit, maybe?" she wondered out loud before quickly dismissing it, "Nah, it always good at first but then it's gone. Why's it always gotta be so hard to find something for a guy?" She looked over at Inara, who had been quiet since they left the terminal, but it looked like her mind was miles away.
" 'Nara? You okay?" Kaylee asked, her mind immediately shifting gears with concern for her friend.

Inara was silently fuming as she walked beside Kaylee. She had no idea when she'd next have the opportunity to find a transport ship. The crew's jobs had been few and far between and rarely anywhere that a decent transport ship would be able to accommodate for all her furniture and possessions. This wasn't a simple journey from one location to another. This was moving to a new home. Or rather, back to an old one. She supposed she could always send for her things but that would be like sending someone on a wild goose chase. Always on the move, last minute jobs that took them all over the 'verse... Kaylee's voice broke through her thoughts.
"'Nara? You okay"
"Yes, I apologize," she said. "I've forgotten my list. I was trying to recall everything I need." It was a partial truth. She hadn't brought her list because she hadn't intended on shopping, thinking all her time would have been used up on her original task. Trained in the art of conversation and to at least give the appearance you'd been listening, she tried to recall as many of Kaylee's words.
"It's only hard to decide on a gift for someone if you're trying too hard. Don't worry about how the gift will make you look. Think about how it will make him feel. And don't try to impress with big and expensive. It's always something simple yet personal that people appreciate most."
She thought a moment. "Something related to the medical field? I know that seems boring to us," she quickly interjected, "but think of how thrilled you are when it comes to tools or parts to fix up Serenity. Find something you think he will admire or use often." She leaned closer and said in a conspiratorial whisper, "Because he'll think of you whenever he sets eyes on it."
Inara glanced at the storefronts, all displaying the latest and greatest yet none compelling her to enter until she spotted an antique store. They were rare these days. People just didn't appreciate the treasures of the past anymore. Things that became obsolete were carelessly disposed of. She slowed as they approached. "How do you feel about treasure hunting?"

Subordinate
Niska's man trailed behind the two women. He was careful not to be spotted, getting on the bosses good side meant no mistakes. It forced him to rely on his audio surveillance equipment to do most of the work for him. He listened intently through his earpiece as it fed him their conversation.
"How do you feel about treasure hunting?" the target exclaimed.
He was a professional but his patience was being tested when they finally selected a destination. "Good choice, this place should be dead," he mumbled to himself. Antiques... either people couldn't afford the stuff or nobody cared he thought. This would make things much easier for him so he could make his move. Giving them a head start he then slipped into the building behind them. It was dim inside, common to give customer's a reprieve. It wasn't an arid world, quite the opposite... There was water everywhere, but the suns reflection could burn you to a crisp.
The man gave them a moment to start browsing and then made it quick. He approached the companion, Inara, as if to help her select a purchase. "Excuse me Miss, did you need help finding something in particular?" he didn't wait for her to answer. His hand darted up and he pressed the combat syringe against her forearm, expelling the sedative into her veins before grabbing a hold of her. Didn't need her making any noise after all.
He shouldered her body and headed for the back exit. Rounding a corner he almost ran over the other woman. He scrunched his lips together, she just picked the wrong isle. Without hesitation he struck her, knocking her out almost instantly. With just a moment to spare he decided to leave his little message with her. Reynolds needed to know who had gotten the best of him. He needed to know how badly he had failed. He had his orders so he crouched to place the data disk in her pocket and then he was gone.

Inara faded in and out, vaguely aware of the whirlwind of events that had just taken place. She remembered being asked if she needed help, a sting in her arm and then losing her balance as the man's face blurred. She'd been jostled to slight awareness when she found herself over a shoulder and she squeezed her eyes shut at the intense dizziness the upside down sensation caused her.
The bounce of the man's quick gate brought her around again and the adrenaline of fear helped clear up the haze a bit more. With all the might she could muster, she kicked at whatever part of him her foot could reach and wriggled herself off his shoulder. As soon as she got her wobbly footing, she let her fist fly at the blur that was his face. Hindered by the sedative, it wasn't as strong as she'd have liked but she'd heard a satisfying crunch. She was only slightly aware of the sting the impact had caused her hand.
Taking hold of the opportunity, she attempted to run but could only manage a stumble as she had trouble maintaining her balance. "Mal," she tried calling but it came out as a weak whisper. Bumping into the alley wall, she tried to grab at something to keep her balance as her world became black around the edges. Inara knew her feeble attempt at escape would be fruitless. She'd only bought herself a couple minutes if she was lucky.
