When Ethan Guilder looked back on his career - something he hadn't done much of lately - he couldn't help but think of that old truth that stayed with him constantly. All poor men want to be rich, all rich men want to be king, and a king ain't satisfied 'til he rules everything. Such a saying came back to him whenever he was reminded that being principal was in many ways the job of a middleman. It was something he had little real control over, but still something he didn't want to spread around. Appearance was all, and he had to appear as the big boss. After all, within the town, education really did stop with him. He was the one having lunch with the sinfully sexy Mayor and approving schedules. As far as the teachers, the staff, the children and the parents were concerned...he was the man in charge. Superintendents, the education board and even the PTA had little input, or at least not as much as they could've exerted.
Ethan closed the last of his personnel files, glancing out the window. It was already dark out. He’d stayed late again. Guilder glanced at the sleeping bag tucked under his desk, but then remembered his dogs. He stood, and headed out.
***Guilder leaves***

The clock, which has been stuck at 8:15 for as long as anyone can remember, began to move once again promptly at 8:15 p.m.
Several hours pass. It is now the morning after the clock has started.
A few may have noticed the clock moving last night and those close enough may have realized when it chimed the 9 p.m. hour. Others may have learned by word of mouth or not until they next arrived in town.
