Plenty defended against the dead but when it comes to keeping people out they take a much more aggressive policy. It comes complete with several heavy commercial vehicles an armored anti-personnel tank and about a dozen or two militiamen. No one has been able to get that close to see and live to tell about it.
The van tore down the road, away from the house. Nate turned around in his seat with his handgun ready but they were already out of range. "Look at em all..." Those corpses would be those bastards problem now... When he focused on the back seat he realized it was Shifty's blood that had sprayed over him. He had been peppered with the blast from that shotgun. Most of it seemed superficial but he took a bit of it to the side of his face and he was clutching it while laying across the seat.
"Fuck... How bad am I? God damn it hurts," the man said through gritted teeth.
He couldn't hide the pain or fear in his voice. The vehicle hit a bump in the road and he stifled a scream. Nate shook his head at the guy. "You could be a lot worse, you have doc look at you when we get back." The ride seemed to take forever with every damn thing bringing a chorus from that baby. It was enough to want to shoot the son of a bitch and be done with it.
Blessedly he zoned out until he saw familiar ground. They passed through the spikes as they headed up to their headquarters. Nate noticed a few of them corpses had impaled themselves. At the fence they stopped to let the sentries open the gate. There was only one real building in the camp. On the backside of the church was the small shanty town for the bulk of their gang. The doctor came around from this direction with an assistant. He always knew when he was needed. There was no exchange they simply collected the wounded man and disappeared back from where they had come. Everybody knew their place here. The guards on watch and Nate were the only ones allowed to carry so he slipped his gun back into his waistband. The driver turned his weapon in to the man by the gate. Nate couldn't remember either of their names. He just made shit up most of the time.
As he walked up to the doors he stopped by his pickup truck. Besides the broken headlight she was the picture of health. He loved that old gal. Probably the only person he truly cared about. She'd been with him since before all this went down, she'd kept his head above water. He gave Zoey a little pat but he didn't continue on his way. "Oh what the hell," Nate said to himself as he climbed up inside the cab. He shut the door and just sat there for a minute before he lit a cigarette. He leaned his head back on the seat and closed his eyes with a sigh.
What a fucking day... They didn't get the supplies and lost two men. It never was easy. He hated this place... Ever since he took over it had never been simple. Not like when it was just him and Zoey. Maybe he should just kill them all and take all their stuff... That saying always came back to him. It always made him smile. These people didn't give two shits about him one way or another, and the feeling was mutual. Nate's eyes cracked open and he just looked at Zoey. She liked him though. She liked having him inside, he mused. "Was it good for you?" he asked out loud as he took another drag. He was starting to feel that itch again... He just tried to clear his thoughts.
After what felt like hours he startled himself awake, if that was what you could call it. He must have zoned out again was more like it. He couldn't complain though, he had all manner of nasty thoughts about those girls he had seen back at that roadside shit hole. They weren't top of his all time favorites but they were fresh on his mind so they had no choice, Nate thought. He needed to tap something, it was clouding his thoughts.
Climbing out of his truck, he passed one of the guards. "I think I'm going out again." he mumbled as he scooted on by. The man just looked at the boss funny and shrugged. Nate had to grab something first as he walked into the church and proceeded on down the isle. The interior was cluttered. They kept everything in here that needed to be out of the weather. And that stuff they didn't want within easy reach, in case someone did manage to get inside their compound. He had erected for himself a little partition up on the dais around the alter. Suited him just fine. If there was an almighty then he was God's gift to the world. What was left of it.
He turned to the left once he hopped up the triple step inside his "room" and walked to a cabinet against the wall. Nate threw the door open and grabbed a bottle of pills from the front. He tore the cap off and popped a few in his mouth, swallowing them down with just his spit. "This run's for me." the man said as his eyes rolled back in his head in anticipation.

Has it been days or weeks since he had left Atlanta? The betrayal... it has been a good day but for some reason all went wrong. Since then time carried no weight. He wasn't absolutely sure how he managed to escape that wild horde. For some reason he managed to leave the streets and a nice couple cared for him in the first days after. Well... at least they did at the beginning. Joe knew that they had talked about abandonning him. About killing him in the night, so he scooped on it. In that night he finished his old beeing and with some good new boots, antibiotics and foods he finally left Atlanta. Sadly they were unarmed. Joe tapped at his pants where he hid his gun. He knew that only two bullets where left and that he needs to really use them sparingly. On the other hand he felt like shooting the next dumbass and use the final bullet to prevent from turning into a walker himself. A noise made him cringe and without thinking he pulled the gun. Two bullets left, so let them appear...
He chuckled as he drove down the road. The looks of the faces of the guards at the gate, priceless. They knew he'd be back, he always came back. Nate kept his fingers crossed he wouldn't be searching long and almost cruised off the road as his jaw hit the floor. He had seen the person a few dozen yards ahead on the road go for cover. Couldn't see who it was though so Nate brought the vehicle to a stop.
Winding down his window he stuck his face out to project his voice, "Hey paco why don't ya come on back?" It's just me in here, no worries!" This whole thing instantly brought back memories of the last hiker he picked up. It still made him smile and maybe it was the drugs talking but he could say he was in a pretty damn good mood.

It took some time until Joe recognized the strange noise to be the sound of a driven car. To much time passed by since the outbreak of this horror that he almost forgot an (at least former) ordinary sound like that.
"Hey paco why don't ya come on back? It's just me in here, no worries!" Some part of him wanted to trust the stranger, wanted to believe in fortunate circumstances, and that the stranger just wanted to give him a ride. Indeed, the whole rest of him thought about having the car for him all alone. Anyway, Joe lowered his gun and left his cover. "Thanks Pal, great to see some other living creatures out here." An evil grin showed up his face while he was slowly walking to the car. Damn it, it would be a great feeling to finally have an own car again. There were still 10 or 15 metres to manage as that moaning sounded and some of them suddenly appeared. "Oh f***" he sweared. Maybe it was time to change the plan and at a brisk pace he moved to the car...
It didn't take long before the person came out from the brush on the side of the road. A man. "Well I struck out there." Nate mumbled to himself. That was okay though, he wasn't going to let that ruin his high. A new face was welcome. Looked like he was making the right choice too as he came closer to the truck. Nate could see the guy lower his gun slightly, he had a grin on his face but it quickly turned sour. They could both clearly hear the familiar groans that inevitably came.
"Looks like you got some friends, they want a ride too?" Nate couldn't contain a really good laugh at this guys expense. "Better hurry it on up." He leaned across the seats and unlocked the door for the stranger to hop in. Sticking his arm out the open window he took aim with his handgun and shot the closest corpse in the neck. His aim was a little off at the moment so he lined up another shot while he waited.

With an unbelievable relief he let himself fall back into the cars front passenger seat as his new companion floor the gas pedal and let them escape those walker. Two of them were still following them but they could never keep up with the cars speed and slowly disappear in the rearview mirror. For the time being he was in safety but in times like these noone would ever be in real safety. Thoughtfully he examined the guy who rescued him before and put out his hand. "The name's Joe... thanks man." Again he looked into the mirror but the only thing he could see were abandoned cars and suitcases that were covering the side of the road.
"The way those walker were following i would bet i had some kind of an affair with the uglier one's girl... or maybe both girls" A broad grin showed on his face. "Is there any bar around you could suggest? A good drink would make this day perfect."
"The name's Joe... thanks man." He reached over and took Joe's hand and shook it. "Nate, nice to meet ya. Good thing you came to me. Have a camp back up the road but if you just try and wander in they'll shoot ya." he followed that one up with another round of hearty laughter. "The way those walker were following i would bet i had some kind of an affair with the uglier one's girl... or maybe both girls" Nate's laugh turned into a wheeze as he couldn't get air in fast enough to keep it up. "My main man Joe, you got that right!" he croaked out after he had a moment to catch his breath. He liked the guy. Maybe he could bring em back to camp. Something told the boss Joe would fit in just nicely.
"Is there any bar around you could suggest? A good drink would make this day perfect." His new friend was in luck. "You better believe it, heading to a sleepy little town not far from here. They got it all, bar, food, pharmacy, you name it. Feel free to get yourself started on the way." Nate reached over and popped open the glove box revealing a bottle of whiskey.
