Probably the most used form of symbolism was black and white symbolizing dark and light or good and bad. Even if an object didn't have a specific purpose to the story, the writers liked to include them to remind us of the continuing theme of the show and also as fun easter eggs for those of us who liked to hunt for them.

Eyes
There is a running theme with eyes. Nearly every episode opens on an eye of some sort. There are many symbolic meanings attached to the eyes. They are said to be the window to the soul. They are symbolic of clairvoyance, omniscience, focus, prophecy, perception, observance, awareness... the list goes on.
