We learned in 1x05 White Rabbit that the reason for his flight was that he was returning with the body of his father who had run off to Australia.

Fun fact: Originally, the writers had intended to shock the audience by killing off Jack toward the end of the pilot episode and it would have been Kate taking the place as leader but the network execs freaked out about it saying "You can't kill the lead character!" (Since Jack was basically the main character in the pilot, he was looked at as the lead.)
Though the writers love to surprise and shock us, this one was way too much of a freak out, at least for the network execs. I like Jack so I'm glad he didn't die in the pilot! Honestly, I think that would have been too much. The pilot was kinda through his eyes and you form a bond with him more than anyone else so can you imagine if at the end of the pilot, he died? I think I would have been pissed, lol!

Oh man, I would have been pissed either! xD Unbelievable, that they've really thought about doing that! Now I'm scared what the writers gonna do with the other characters. o.O (Pssst... There always have to be an asshole character like Sawyer, means he's probably out for let-someone-die lol)
