5 out of 5. A-mazing! Have I mentioned in the last five minutes how much I love this show?
So much happened in this second part! The flashbacks of everyone getting on the plane and the events just before were so neat to watch and again, it reminded me of the amazing character development in this show. The survivors have all changed so much, most for the better.
Arzt is so hilariously annoying that I was kinda bummed he went boom. It was insanely unexpected! Lol, when it comes to things like dynamite, shows and movies always show them being careful but I think this if the first time someone actually did blow up just like he was lecturing about. Scared the crap out of me, surprised the hell out of me, and then made me crack up. Then I felt a little bad about laughing over a character's death, lol! The best though, which is probably one of my favorite quotes ever, was by Hurley. "Dude, you've got some Arzt on you."
There were a few examples in this ep that showed the writers always used to read the message boards. Arzt mentioned two of them. He talked about how it seems everything is about about them (Jack, Kate, Locke, etc.) and how "there are other survivors, you know!" We'd all been talking about how we totally love the main characters but what about all those other survivors? The other is about Hurley not losing weight. Arzt brought that up too but didn't get to get an answer because they emerged from the Black Rock with the dynamite.
Omg, I can't believe Locke. Talking about that Operation game and then while he's carefully picking up, he goes "BZZZ!!" That's messed up. Hilarious, but messed up. Poor Jack jumped and then looked at him like he was insane. Well, I think Locke is a little insane.
Rousseau took Aaron! I didn't see that coming. I almost thought that she was the one who had set the fire creating the black smoke like Charlie accused but she genuinely was surprised the Others weren't there. Looks like it was all a distraction because when Danielle overheard them talking about "taking the boy", looks like it was Walt, not Aaron they were talking about and those bastards got him! Not only did we get our first glimpse of the monster but we also got to see these Others for the first time! Again, we see the symbolism come full circle and strangely enough, both involved Aaron. First there was the birth of Aaron and the death of Boone. Now there was the return of Aaron and the taking of Walt.
I was so happy when it seemed they'd been rescued! The way they cheered, the way the music played. I remember thinking, gosh, what now? They're already being rescued! But nope! Not only did the Others snatch up Walt but they shot Sawyer, beat up Michael, and blew up the raft. Holy crap, what are they going to do? Michael and Sawyer were mentioning they were 15 miles out. That's a very long way to be, especially when you're just floating in the ocean with only the rubble of a raft.
Oh man. Just like we feared, Charlie came across the beechcraft. I was so mad at him when at the end, you see a Virgin Mary statue in his backpack. Dammit Charlie! That plane is a druggy's dream come true. There was a massive amount of heroin on it. So many of those statues and each filled with tons of heroin. Any druggy would be set for years. I guess it's a good thing he didn't find it sooner when he was at the beginnings of withdrawal or he never would have gotten to where he is now.
We got to see more of this mysterious monster "security system"! Did you see that weird stream of black smoke? What the heck is it? And whatever had hold of Locke's leg was also black smokey looking then after they threw the dynamite down the hole (I lol'd when Kate yelled "DIE!" while throwing it) a cloud of black smoke came up out of the ground and then looked like it rushed away. Oh man, I remember all the time we spent rewinding and rewatching on slow motion, pausing and rewinding again, trying to see what the heck was dragging Locke.
When Locke saw the monster the first time, he had this look on his face like he was seeing something amazing and beautiful. When he lay there on the ground, this look of expectation on his face as he was expecting that same feeling changed into fear. I wonder what he saw now that was different from before and why was it different? Why did it seem the monster presented itself differently to Locke now than it did the first time? What's changed? Even though he looked scared, he still told Jack to let him go, that he'll be alright. He still has faith in the island and that monster.
The Michael and Jin scene where Jin gives Michael the watch was great. Look at how far they've come. Every time I see that handcuff still on Jin's wrist, I remember how they'd always come to blows and how much they once hated each other. Now, despite the language difference, they understand each other without technically conversing, like two old friends.
I really loved the Jack/Locke scene where they stopped to talk while waiting for Hurley and Kate to catch up. We really got to see the two man face each other and lay out their differences. Faith vs. science. Locke's faith is so strong that he believes even though Jack is a man of science, he believes in destiny. Locke really seems like he's losing it when he claimed that Boone was a sacrifice the island demanded. That was really messed up and it's no wonder Jack tells Kate that when this was all over, they were going to have a "Locke problem" to deal with.
Toward the end, Hurley was also sounding a little crazy. As they were walking, he was starting to repeat the numbers under his breath just like Leonard at the mental hospital was doing. Then, when he tripped and spotted the numbers on the side of the hatch, he again sounded like Leonard, running and panicking saying "The numbers are bad!!" This again reminds me of what Leonard said about Hurley using the numbers to win the lotto. "You opened the box!" This time, they actually did open a box of sorts when they blew the lid off the hatch.
Did you see how far down that tunnel goes? What's in there? What does it lead to?
The flashbacks were once again so great! Poor Jin. He had planned to disappear with Sun but Mr. Paik was always a step ahead of him. The message he sent was so heartbreaking. "You're not free. Never have been, never will be." Jin looked devastated. It looked like he and Sun would never be able to go back to what they once were. He would pay for the rest of his life for daring to fall in love with Sun.
I love all the crossovers we see in the flashbacks. Like when Michael is on the phone and you see Locke being pushed by on his wheelchair, Charlie yelling from the full elevator at Hurley as he made a run for the stairs, Arzt shouting at Hurley for cutting in line and then lecturing some random dude about taking his laptop out last minute and later, helping Claire with her bags on the plane. Hurley rushing onto the plane and so happy, giving Walt a thumbs up as he walked by. Jack and Locke exchanging glances on the plane and a small smile. Shannon digging through her bag for her inhaler and Boone *sniffle* holding one out to her.
I felt so bad for Locke in the flashbacks. You could see how defeated he looked having to be wheelchair bound. When they said they couldn't find the loading wheelchair and would it be okay to carry him on, that look on his face as he's being carried and then after he drops the plane brochure and can't reach it to pick it up. It's no wonder he's gotten this crazy blind faith in the island. It gave him the ability to walk again. I think he'll forever worship the island for it.
The Spanish comic book Walt had been reading! It was Hurley's! I so love all the little connections.
Also, you can see Charlie struggling to get his guitar into the carry-on closet and not really succeeding. It reminded me of how he told Locke that he was made to check it. All those little details the writers pay close attention to are just amazing.
Favorite quotes/scenes:Hurley: How exactly does something like this happen?
Danielle: Are you on the same Island as I am?
Hurley: I guess that explains it.
Sayid: These belong to your brother.
Shannon: I need these things. I can't just leave them. What are we doing? Hiding? As if they won't find us. It's just -- it's too much. It's too much.
Sayid: [stroking her hair] It won't be too much if I carry it for you.
Jack: [Hurley stares.] What?
Hurley: [pointing to a piece of flesh on Jack's back] You got some... Arnzt on you.
Sawyer: Yep. I, for one, never knew how much Tracy missed her hubby and 2 kids back in Fresno. Yet she's sleeping next to good old Scott to keep her warm at night.
Walt: That's Steve. Scott's dead.
Hurley: Whoever named this place Dark Territory? Genius.
Locke: I think that's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack -- because you're a man of science.
Jack: Yeah, and what does that make you?
Locke: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.
Jack: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?
Locke: The Island.
Jack: I don't believe in destiny.
Locke: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.
Michael: Since the day you told me you wanted on this raft, I couldn't figure it out. Why does a guy who only cares about himself want to risk his life to save everyone else? The way I see it, there's only two choices -- you're either a hero or you want to die.
Sawyer: Well, I ain't no hero, Mike.
Hurley: Can I have the flashlight? Because, uh, the torch with the dynamite thing, not making a whole lot of sense to me.
Jack: Everybody wants me to be a leader until I make a decision that they don't like.
