As the group crowded around the two girls, deciding which ways they would all dissappear off to, Bennett was contemplating himself as to if this would be the right time to dissappear quietly. They had used him for what was needed, he was sure that none of them would notice his exit as they all seemed rather preoccupied anyways. Bennett slowly broke from the group as he backed up into the nearest bushes, and alacazam, his disappearing act was complete. Hopefully this little situation redeemed his actions from earlier. This was no time for any more mistakes.

"Sure thing; get my cape sister!"
Linda' eyes rolled up to meet Stu in his exaggerated heroic stance beside her. "Alright there Superman, let's jet out of here before we get chased into another hole," Linda was looking forward to getting out of the jungle and back down to the beach. Especially before whatever came after her and Heidi in the first place makes a second appearance. Waving goodbye to Heidi and the others, Linda headed down with Stu as she attempted to remember why she had even come all the way out into the jungle in the first place. Her mind was barren of any sort of idea, that was until her eye caught a small teddy bear with a pink bow sitting on a tree that they passed by. She didn't say anything, stop or acknowledge the bear. Linda simply kept this to herself as she followed Stu back to the beach.

Linda and Stu disappeared in the direction of the beach as the rest of us moved toward the caves. Bennett was also gone and I assumed he'd joined the beach team. I realized I didn't get to thank each person involved... or did I? I was having trouble keeping track of the whirlwind of events since we'd finally been found but made a mental note to thank each one once I got myself cleaned up, fed, and rested.
"Don't worry,"
I took extra comfort in Gwen linking her arm through mine. I needed the extra support as my legs were wobbly from exhaustion and lack of sustenance. 'Also less likely I'll walk into a tree,' I thought in amusement. I was definitely feeling loopy and most of my comments tended to not make it past thoughts bumping around in my mind when I was like this.
"Seb and I won't let anything else happen to you. Totally boring and uneventful rest of the day, I promise."
Seb. So that's who the other guy was. 'Must be short for Sebastian?'? I figured. I gave a tired yet thankful smile from one to the other and even in the state I was in, the chemistry between the two was palpable. I managed to find a bit of amusement in that and gave Gwen a knowing look. 'Damsel in distress turned third wheel. Not exactly how I remember the stories going...'
"I long for boring and uneventful," I managed to say.

*** Gwen and Sawyer enter from F3 - Sawyer's Shelter ***
Gwen wasn't sure how long they had been trudging through the jungle. The path back to the caves had become familiar territory by now but when they veered off, the trees and the foliage on the ground became thicker and more difficult to navigate. The sun struggled to filter through the forest canopy, and oddly the ambient noise became quieter. She wished Locke, the tracking genius, was here but he'd been busy with the more important task of hunting boar to keep everyone fed. She wasn't even sure what she was looking for, anyway.
Gwen paused to take a drink of water and lean against a tree. "So, what were you up to in Australia?" she asked of Sawyer, feeling it was a polite and neutral topic of conversation.

Although Sawyer wouldn't state so, he was glad when Gwen eventually paused her steps to take a break. He didn't want to be the first to do so, because, even though he had no pain anymore, he was still feeling somewhat exhausted. What weren't you all doing for just one pack of cigarettes nowadays?
Sawyer was just unscrewing a bottle of water himself when she suddenly started a conversation. Straight to ugly things, at that.
"So, what were you up to in Australia?"
"You British girls aren't much into small talk, are ya?" he asked with a slight, humorless grin. Sawyer didn't answer the question, but instead, took his time to take a drink of water, too. It was obvious that he wasn't very pleased with the idea of talking about himself.

"You British girls aren't much into small talk, are ya?"
"What? I thought it was a perfectly innocent question," Gwen shot back with a slight laugh. She hadn't expected him to be this evasive right off the bat. But then again, he did have to be coerced to being out here with her in the first place. With his aquamarine eyes and his sultry drawl, Sawyer was no doubt used to getting what he wanted with little effort. All she wanted was to not be stuck walking in silence, letting her fears run wild.
"Am I allowed to guess?" she offered. Gwen placed a thoughtful finger to her chin while looking him up and down. "Hmm, champion surfer? Actor? Opal miner?" she tossed out options while waiting for a reaction.

"What? I thought it was a perfectly innocent question,"
True enough. It was, as long as you haven't been making that trip to get someone killed. Sawyer casually shrugged his shoulders, pretending that to have been a joke. He wouldn't like her to guess his reason for flight having been much more personal than just a trip for business or vacation.
"Am I allowed to guess?"
Sawyer gave her a silent look as if to say sure, try your luck, much more at ease again. He liked guessing games, or games in general; At least, for as long as it wouldn't hit a weak point with himself.
"Hmm, champion surfer? Actor? Opal miner?"
"Debt-collector," he replied. Not all debts were monetary... "Okay, my turn now," Sawyer spoke up again before Gwen could have come up with any reaction at all. He grinned before making a wild guess, although rather out of fun. "Child care worker, for private households with enough money to pay someone from another country." Sawyer didn't pay enough attention to everyone around him, and also not while they had been on the plane, to know that she was a flight assistant.

"Debt-collector. ... Okay, my turn now. Child care worker, for private households with enough money to pay someone from another country."
Awfully long way to go for a debt, she thought while taking another drink of water. "Ugh, no," Gwen answered. "I'm not a nanny, and I'm definitely not Mary Poppins. You really don't remember?" She wasn't sure if he was joking or trying to get a rise out of her. While everyone else seemed to have assumed she possessed some sort of authority due to the flight attendant uniform, this man seemed to have completely ignored that fact altogether.
"Alright, see if this jogs your memory...." She placed the water bottle down on the ground and began miming the usual gestures of the pre-flight speech -- the seat belt buckling and unbuckling, the oxygen mask, the exits in front and behind. "Please return your tray table to its upright and locked position," she added. "Any of this ringing a bell?"

"Ugh, no,""I'm not a nanny, and I'm definitely not Mary Poppins. You really don't remember?""Alright, see if this jogs your memory...."
Sawyer didn't like to show any weakness, although he usually didn't give a shit if people thought he was taking no interest in anyone but himself, therefore wasn't exactly seeing it as weakness, so he was showing no reaction at all, but, instead, was waiting for Gwen to do her thing, whatever that was.
"Please return your tray table to its upright and locked position,""Any of this ringing a bell?"
Oh. Sawyer remembered her, indeed. However, he also didn't like to give anyone this feeling of having gained enough of his attention to make him remember them. It was just his nature, acting in a way nobody would want to be close to him.
"You mean except for the alarming bell words like this bring to ring in your memory after you've crashed on a desert island?" Sawyer came up with a slight grin, after all. "Well, yes. Was just jokin'. I always remember girls in uniforms," he added with a wink before taking another gulp of water.

"That's a relief. I would hate to think I hadn't made an impression," Gwen replied in a similar joking manner. She didn't flatter herself that there was anything that set her apart from the other flight attendants in his eyes. Just another random server of food, drink, and blankets until a passenger got on the next plane.
"At least you didn't count on me to have any answers," she confided, staring at a twisted tree root near her feet. "Once that plane was out of the sky, I was as lost as everyone else. But you seem to be taking it all in stride." When she glanced back up at Sawyer, Gwen noticed something just beyond him in the trees. A sand-colored shape. Another person this far out? No, it couldn't be. She blinked again and it was gone.
"In your own slightly selfish stride," she added.

Sawyer was just about to casually answer her assumption when he noticed her eyes wandering past him for a moment. He turned around to see if there was something behind him. Hopefully, she would let him know if there was some kind of monster and not just wait for what will happen because it was only him. Well, nah, she needed his help regarding the lost dude.
"In your own slightly selfish stride," Gwen lastly added, turning her full attention back at him.
Sawyer grinned slightly. "I'm a survivor. Always have been," he shrugged, ignoring her last comment. Why would he defend himself when they both knew that she was right? But, after all, it was the selfish persons who survived.

"I'm a survivor. Always have been."
"Oh, I can see that," Gwen retorted, taking one more drink before securing the cap back on the water bottle. "Although you are currently dependent on others for your medication and fresh bandages. So...maybe it's a good thing we don't all subscribe to the same definition of surviving as you do," she observed, grinning up at him as she walked past.
She was about to get underway again, unsure of the direction, until she saw that shape among the trees again. It was definitely a man with his back to them. And he was walking slowly further into the trees. Was it real? Could Sawyer see it, too? "I think...I think we should go in that direction," Gwen said, feeling compelled to follow.

When Gwen stowed her water bottle away, back into her backpack, Sawyer did the same and followed her steps to continue through the jungle. "Well, I-" he was just going to defend himself with another remark about hers when she suddenly stopped, once again turning around towards the trees to their side.
"I think...I think we should go in that direction,"
"Seen somethin'?" Sawyer asked as he followed her direction of view, actually seeing something there as well, giving Gwen a silent nod to let her know that it wasn't only her imagination, and as an approval to the suggestion for direction.

"No, I... I'm not sure," Gwen answered hesitantly. "At least it's not a polar bear." When Sawyer nodded in agreement, she continued walking, doing her best to keep her footing and hold branches aside for Sawyer as he walked behind her. "What were you about to say back there?" she asked. "Believe me, you won't hurt my feelings. I've been doing this job long enough to have heard pretty much every insult in the book. It's fair, I dragged you out on what's been a wild goose chase so far. Or maybe you grew up with too much of that Southern hospitality to tell a lady how you really feel?"

"Ah, never mind," Sawyer shrugged it off while they walked. He hadn't been going to offend her but surely also hadn't supposed to say something nice. He usually didn't. However, right now, he wasn't in a mood to get himself another person hating him, at least, for as long as their little mission would take. "So, why so invested in seeking out this guy while nobody else seemed to have even noticed his absence?" Sawyer changed the topic with a grin. The lost one seemed, at least, unremarkable enough to leave any expression on him. "Holiday flirtation?"

"So, why so invested in seeking out this guy while nobody else seemed to have even noticed his absence? Holiday flirtation?"
Gwen rolled her eyes, though he wouldn't have been able to see it with her back to him. "No, it wasn't that," she protested. But Sawyer was merely asking the same reasonable question that anyone would have, including herself. "I mean, it wasn't just that," she added. She had the feeling he was the sort of person who would see through her BS so why bother trying?
"I suppose Sebastian reminded me of home," Gwen explained, pausing her steps to look back at Sawyer. "The accent and all. He was funny and sweet and smart. Talking to him, it helped me take my mind off all the bad things." She realized she was referring to Sebastian in the past tense and chided herself for being so pessimistic. Well, maybe realistic given everything they'd been through, but pessimistic none the less.
"Anyway, I'd want someone to come looking for me if I went missing. Wouldn't you?" She tossed the question over her shoulder at him as she began walking again.

"No, it wasn't that,""I mean, it wasn't just that,""I suppose Sebastian reminded me of home,""The accent and all. He was funny and sweet and smart. Talking to him, it helped me take my mind off all the bad things."
Sawyer was rather surprised, visible on his features, when, after her negotiation, an honest explanation followed, one packed with emotions, at that. Since when were people opening up to him, the island's asshole? This scene was rare, and actually, he didn't know if he liked that or not. His stubborn mind was telling him that he didn't. People hated him, and that was exactly the way he wanted it to be. Right?
"Anyway, I'd want someone to come looking for me if I went missing. Wouldn't you?"
Gwen caught him off-guard with that sudden question, especially in a moment where he was questioning if he really liked to be the island's asshole, once again visible on his face, at least for a moment. "I... sure," he replied, sounding rather unsure, due to the situation not the question, though. After all, Sawyer couldn't help but add something more to attenuate his answer. "You owe me a pack of cigarettes," he shrugged nonchalantly.

"I... sure. You owe me a pack of cigarettes."
Gwen smiled to herself, sensing that Sawyer might have just been on the brink of offering a glimpse into his true nature. That is, before thinking better of it and getting back to business. "Right, right. You know I'm good for it," she assured him. "And you know exactly where to find me, Mr. Debt Collector. It's not like I'm trying to ... hide."
Gwen barely breathed the last word as she rounded a large tree and caught sight of the mysterious figure again. This time it was close enough that she could clearly tell that it was a man with his back to her -- tall and slender with dark, curly hair. Wearing the sand-colored fatigues of an Army soldier that stood out distinctly against the greens of the jungle. She felt her throat tighten and her heartbeat begin to race as the familiarity of this form hit her. But that would be impossible, it didn't make any sense.
Before Gwen could process what she thought she was seeing, the man took off running through the trees. "No, no, wait!" she cried, desperate to keep him in sight as she began running after him.

"Right, right. You know I'm good for it,""And you know exactly where to find me, Mr. Debt Collector. It's not like I'm trying to ... hide."
Sawyer was no idiot, knowing that she was aware of the glimpse she had just gotten, glad that she was smart enough not to bring that up, though. Anyways, before he could have given this any more thought or replied to her words, they were interrupted once again. Sawyer immediately followed her direction of view, seeing nothing, though. Instead, he took notice of the change in Gwen's features, looking somewhat outzoned. Just as he was going to draw her attention back, questioning what it was that she thought to have seen, she suddenly began to cry words out and start a run through the jungle. Damn.
"Hey!" Sawyer called out to her, following her steps while regretting that he had accepted this for just one package of cigarettes. No one had told him that they would be getting active like this. Slightly annoyed, he pushed plants and brushes aside, feeling dorns piercing his skin while trying to catch up with Gwen. "Would you mind tellin' me why we're running?" he eventually asked out of breath as he finally got to catch her on her arm to force her into a halt.

Despite the jungle's obstacles, Gwen did her best to keep up with the retreating figure until it finally stopped. She ceased her pursuit as well and tried to catch her breath. When the man slowly turned to her, she found herself face to face with someone she knew all too well. Those dark brown eyes that once held so much affection now seemed to hold nothing. "Tim?" she exhaled shakily. "You... you can't be here. You're not real."
The love that had left her life so suddenly and tragically not so long ago, now standing right in front of her in the middle of an island jungle. So close that it would take no time to cover the few feet between them. Gwen began to reach out until she felt herself pulled back.
"Would you mind tellin' me why we're running?"
"I was following him," she hastily explained. But in the moment that she'd turned to answer Sawyer, Gwen turned back to find him gone. "He was here, he... he was right here." She passed a hand over her forehead to sweep away the sweat and stray hair. "You don't see anything there, do you?" she begged of Sawyer.
A clipped exhale of laughter escaped her lips. "So I'm going mad then. That's brilliant," she concluded, unsure where to go or what to do next. She felt completely off-kilter. There was a slight incline to a creek below them so she headed in that direction, hoping a splash of cool water on her face would restore her senses.

Before he had managed to bring her to a stop, Sawyer had a feeling that she was talking to someone; well, someone not being there, at that. Her words toward him, however, proved that he'd been right. So, it seemed one of the few people he had been rating smartly and grounded became just as mad as everyone else on this island. Just brilliant.
"I was following him,""He was here, he... he was right here.""You don't see anything there, do you?"
Sawyer didn't say anything but kept his hold on her arm as he feared she might start another run. The look in his eyes wasn't judging but telling her that she might need a break or some water.
"So I'm going mad then. That's brilliant,"
"You wouldn't be the first," Sawyer shrugged rather casually, releasing her arm then. While they started to walk again, him not even asking where she was heading now, Sawyer spoke up again: "Who have ya seen?" Maybe it was brisk to ask, but that never stopped him from doing so anyway. Even though he didn't care much about his fellow survivors, or that was, at least, what he wanted them to believe, he was a curious person who liked to stick their nose into others' privacy.

"Who have ya seen?"
"Someone who couldn't have been there," Gwen stated flatly. Now that the adrenaline and the shock were wearing off, the feeling of foolishness was settling in. Of being all the way out here in the first place, of seeing things that weren't real. She was sure if she spoke of it to Jack, he'd have some rational explanation -- dehydration, lack of sleep, etc. But she was hesitant to even bring it up; he didn't need an added worry about her mental state.
Reaching the stream, Gwen knelt on the dry rocks and cupped her hands into the running water, splashing some on her face and the back of her neck. This self-appointed mission was clearly a failure, and they should probably get started back to the beach. She only hoped Sawyer would refrain from cheerily saying 'I told you so' all the way there.
Gwen took a few more deep breaths and a few more gulps of water from her bottle before beginning to get to her feet again. In the sun's reflections dancing on the water, she caught sight of what seemed to be a branch sticking up from the stream a little further down. But upon closer inspection, it wasn't wood at all -- it was a hand. Still attached to a body that was partly submerged and barely breaking the water's path.
"Sawyer?" she breathed, eager to back away from the horrible vision but feeling frozen. "Sawyer!" she repeated with more urgency, pointing wordlessly downriver. "Do you see that? Tell me you see that!"

Sawyer didn't ask more questions regarding the guy she had seen; He just assumed it had been a guy-thing, just from the way she shrugged it off. Anyways, they weren't here to talk exes or something, especially not those who weren't more than a human fata morgana. Sawyer allowed her to cool herself down at the stream while he was busying himself with the refill of his water bottle.
"Sawyer?"
He didn't react right away, especially with the bottle in his hands still not completely filled, but when she called for him again, this time more urgently, he turned around rather abruptly. He even rose from his kneeling position, following the direction she was pointing at. "What is-" he started, yet didn't come further as what he saw was silencing him immediately.
"Do you see that? Tell me you see that!"
"I do," Sawyer finally said after a short pause, much more seriously, although still much more collected than Gwen was. And even though people usually saw him as no help, he moved closer toward the corpse, or the parts they had come to see yet; Actually to spare his companion from the view.
"Oh, shit.." Sawyer uttered once he saw a face to the hand. He might not be good with names, but he was with faces. After all, this was one he had seen among their group, at least some days ago.

Though she was relieved when Sawyer confirmed that this was not a hallucination, the truth of what Gwen had seen hit her like a ton of bricks. And even as he tried to insinuate himself between her and the body, she knew she had to take a closer look. Just to know that it was true.
Time in the water along with the tropical heat had taken its toll, but there were still enough details to recognize the missing person. The dark brown locks of hair, the clothing, the shoes -- she knew it was Sebastian. And she knew that he was dead and had been for some time. All alone out here with no one to help.
"Oh my God," she cried, clapping a hand over her mouth as she turned away. She couldn't catch her breath, and the jungle around her seemed to be spinning. Gwen reached out to Sawyer and clasped his arm, desperate for a lifeline. "What -- what do we do?" she pleaded. "I don't ... I-I can't...."

"Oh my God,"
Due to his own shock, which surely was not as personal as anyone else's would have been, Sawyer hadn't noticed that his plan of sparing Gwen from this view was about to fail when, suddenly, she was standing right beside him. Before he could even turn around, she clasped his arm, holding it in her desperate state.
"What -- what do we do?""I don't ... I-I can't...."
"Hey- hey," Sawyer tried to ease her at least enough so that she would listen to him. For a moment, though, all he did was embracing her in his arms. Everyone mistook him as the person who didn't give a shit about anyone while, in truth, he just didn't like anyone to see that he sometimes did, especially in situations like this.
As soon as the crying and the shivering stopped, at least enough to not fear that she might fall unconscious, Sawyer loosened the grip around her a little. "We go back, and we're gonna tell Jack. That's what we do. Okay?" He was sure that Jack could, at least, tell them what might have caused this dude's death since he doubted that he had just stumbled and then drowned.

Gwen held onto Sawyer desperately until it finally felt like the shock was wearing off and she could breathe again. For all the times she had regretted asking him to accompany her, she was eternally grateful for his steady presence now. When he pulled away, she backed off as well and brusquely began wiping the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand.
"We go back, and we're gonna tell Jack. That's what we do. Okay?"
Gwen nodded quickly at his suggestion. "Yeah, okay, we... we do that," she agreed softly. She risked one more glance at Sebastian's body but then tore her eyes away, fearing the sadness and panic might set in again. She retrieved her things from beside the water and climbed back up the riverbank, headed back to the caves.

Even though Sawyer wouldn't state such a thing, he was proud of Gwen for pulling herself together the way she was. Not everyone would be able to brush off their shock and tears just a moment later, retrieving their things in an almost calm way. Good girl, he thought while watching her for another second, then getting his things as well. Giving Gwen one last nod, they started heading for the caves.

*** Jack and Sawyer enter from F3 - Jungle Outskirts of Caves ***
Jack followed Sawyer's lead as they made the trek through the jungle. It had been a bit of a hike, and a silent one for the most part, though Jack's healthy physique wasn't fazed all too much by the hills and slopes. Jack didn't have all that much to say to Sawyer, and yet his mind raced with curious questions about the intentions of the sneaky man in front of him that was typically only out for himself. They halted in sync for a brief moment to catch their breaths and to replenish their thirst in the island heat. Wiping his dust caked forehead, Jack threw a question in Sawyer's direction as he began to unscrew his bottle of water, "So, you and Gwen huh? Didn't know you guys talked much," Jack poked nonchalantly. The tension between the two of them had been visibly painful the entire hike, so it was only a moment of time in which one of them would have broken the lingering silence.

Sawyer had known just as well about their inability to keep that silence for their whole trek. He was slightly surprised, however, to see Jack being the one who went into teasing first. Sawyer watched him as he took a gulp of water himself. It was only when the bottle lowered in his hands that he launched into an answer, sounding a little less nonchalant but, instead, more teasing. "Jealous, doc?" Of course, Sawyer didn't think so, which was why this was merely to give Jack to understanding that he could just as well go back into teasing, not at all feeling ashamed for anything.
