River grinned, playing along with Simon as he held out her chair. She knew that fruits were a luxury these days but she played along. For a moment she seemed to be okay, memory snapping back to when she was little- before everything. "For instance, an appetizer of chicken satay, an entree of pepper steak with a side of garlic mashed potatoes, and for dessert...sticky rice with mango," Sticky rice with mango, how long has it been...
"A feast fit for a queen," River smiled just scanned the table with her eyes, picking out a thing of noodles but she wasn't sure about the protein, her hand hovered only to pull away. "Too many colors not enough shapes." and she was back.

"A feast fit for a queen.... Too many colors not enough shapes."
"Okay, you can skip that course then," Simon said soothingly, pushing the seemingly offensive bowl across the table and out of reach. He prepared a bowl of noodles for himself and took a seat at the table next to her. "So it looks like our next stop is going to be Newhall, a place with lots of cows. Do you remember our last encounter with cows? The captain was delivering a shipment for that man on Persephone. You said that they forgot how to be cows while they were on the ship. And then they remembered when they were back on the ground under the sky."
Granted, that was before they had been kidnapped and River had been tied to a stake to be burned as a witch. But he was trying to focus on the positive. The berries, the post-holer digging holes for posts....

River watched as Simon moved the bowl away from her. She didnt question it or even care, she reached for something mushed in a bowl and peered inside. "So it looks like our next stop is going to be Newhall, a place with lots of cows. Do you remember our last encounter with cows? The captain was delivering a shipment for that man on Persephone. You said that they forgot how to be cows while they were on the ship. And then they remembered when they were back on the ground under the sky." River remembered the cows and looked up at Simon.
"Yes," River sensed that this mission might be dangerous. They were going to talk to a man that worked closely with the alliance. He was far from the core planets but still apart of them- at least that is what she saw when looking at the others. "we'll be okay." She said outloud.

About a half hour passes.
During that time, Dex Wilde returned on the Shadowheart away shuttle to reconnect with his crewmates aboard the Serenity and Mal calls for everyone to collect in the Dining Area for a meeting with Dex volunteering to collect Wendy and River for the meeting.

Wash and Zoe make their way to the lounge, finding they are the first to arrive. They get their pick of seats and wait for the rest of the crew and guests to arrive. "Another coup, exciting," Zoe smirked and leaned in to kiss Wash's cheek, a quick cute moment.

River walked along the corridors of Serenity for a while. After she left Inara's shuttle, one would think she got lost but she knew the way. Serenity whispered to her quite often and they shared such a bond. She knew all the places to hide, all the places that were just hers. Entering the area she stared over at Wash and Zoe and waved, and they waved back.
"Meeting."

After checking on with Sally one more time, Madison made her way to the dining hall. The ship was a wonder and she loved the older models, Mal had found a good one and Kaylee kept her in the sky. "Hello," Madison smiled sweetly at River who seemed to be very interested in her bracelets. "Do you like it?" River nodded, "It's from an old friend, a good luck charm. It's brought me very good luck."

***Wendy enters from Cargo Bay***
The one good thing about all the training she'd been subjected to was that Wendy could bury whatever she was feeling so deep that no hints of it remained on the surface. She gave a friendly smile along with a business-like nod as she glanced around at the people who'd be helping her. Though the Shadowheart crew hadn't originally been part of the plan. Was that changing now or was this meeting about something else?
"Welcome to the party," Book said in his deep, calming voice as he got to his feet and pulled out the chair beside River, knowing it's where Wendy liked to sit.
Wendy smiled her appreciation and gracefully maneuvered her way into the seat while carefully avoiding even the slightest physical contact. It wasn't only because her system was feeling overwhelmed at her current inability to fully turn off her ability, but more so out of respect for the others' private thoughts and feelings.
"How are you feeling?" he asked quietly, though in the small room, the conversation was hardly private.
"A bit better, thanks to your doctor." Wendy sent Simon an appreciative nod then turned toward the sound of an unimpressed snort at the other end of the table where Jayne sat polishing one of his guns.
"Big deal. What'd he do, poke you with one of his needles?" Wendy easily sensed long standing jealous there toward the doctor and she snorted at him derisively in turn. Jayne pulled his gaze from his gun to put his attention on her. "Anybody can do that."
Wendy rolled her eyes and shook her head, thinking that was the end of that nonsense but her reaction only goaded him. She saw the look he'd bestowed upon several of the women already in her short time here come across his face and saw the innuendo coming from a mile away.
"I got a needle I can poke ya with," he said with a leer.
There was a chorus of warning toned 'Jayne's' from several people in the room. It was almost comical. Wendy should have kept her mouth shut but she couldn't resist. "Nah, I'm good. You just keep your little needle to yourself."
"It ain't little," he scoffed. Wendy started to roll her eyes again before she caught Inara's warning shake of her head but it was too late. "It ain't! I'll show ya," he protested, tossing his gun onto the table, his chair scraping back as he got to his feet and started for the fastening of his pants.
"No, no!" came Wendy's insistent reply as her hands shot up to block River's view. Thankfully the chorus of several other voices kicking in at the same time with their own vehement plead for him to stop had him pausing and actually looking disappointed. She looked around at the others, having sworn she heard a 'not again' mixed into the commotion and finding no surprised faces, at least amongst the Serenity crew, she guessed she might not have misheard.
"Jayne," came Kaylee's voice, tone like a mother chastising a child. "What'd the Captain say about whippin' it out at the dinner table?"
Hands falling away from his pants, Jayne huffed and slumped back into his seat. He crossed his arms and sent Wendy an accusatory look that said this had all been her fault. The guy didn't know any better so she took no offense. In fact, the only problem she had over the whole scenario was holding back her snicker of amusement.

*** Dex enters from Cargo Bay ***
Dex took his time to stroll down to the kitchen area that the captain had made the team meeting point. He figured he'd give Wendy a few moments to settle in - and settle down in a few different ways than one. Dex wasn't sure what exactly to expect from these people. They seemed nice enough that they would buy his alibi as he had Mads and the crew to back him up otherwise. But if things went sideways, well, Dex couldn't make any promises. No strings attached...except one strand was beginning to get tougher by the minute, and severing it was becoming more difficult since the moment he saw her in that pretty dress.
"Jayne," "What'd the Captain say about whippin' it out at the dinner table?"
Dex stopped at the open entrance of the kitchen and stared down at the crew as they bickered with one named Jayne. Dex's forehead scrunched slightly in perplexity as he inwardly chuckled at the unfolding scene before him, deciding it was his turn to jump in.
"Careful, everyone might think you're compensating for something," Dex smiled with amusement as he strolled in casually and sat down by Madison.
"It's good to see you, and alive at that," Dex placed a gentle hand on his captain's shoulder in their reunion as he grew serious with concern, "How is everyone holding up? How's Sally?"

Inara had been quietly observing the room as people trickled in, mostly distracted with her own thoughts of what had suddenly and unexpectedly transpired in the passenger quarters between herself and Mal. Of course, none of her inner turmoil made its way to the exterior. She'd made herself a cup of tea before settling into a chair. As long as her lips were occupied daintily sipping at her cup of tea, she was portraying an alternate reason for her lack of conversation.
At first, Inara had felt light and carefree, the bright glow of elation warming her from the inside as she still rode on that cloud. But the more she thought about it, the more doubt and trepidation began to swirl in its dark and heavy cloud, dimming the glow and leading her to replace some of that warmth with a soothing cup of tea. What had happened did not lead to simple consequences. Either it was the best thing that could have happened or the very worst. There was no in between when it came to the two of them. Inara did not like complications and she'd stumbled into the biggest one; the very one she'd carefully avoided since the first day she'd toured the shuttle and had felt that fire between them.
When their little reader entered the room, Inara immediately tucked away her thoughts and emotions. She gave River one of her warm, loving smiles and absorbed herself in the people and events currently taking place. Inara distracted herself in light conversation with Book, nodding a greeting to her old friend as she entered and sat beside River, keeping her company.
Soon after, their troubled guest reader entered and Inara couldn't help but to discreetly observe. Not that she was nosey. Only that Inara found fascination with mysteries as so few people were to her. Just as the other times she'd had the opportunity to observe Wendy, Inara only picked up the fact that Wendy had gone through the level of Companion training that an actual Companion went through.
Every now and again, she did catch the barely discernable evidence of physical pain when the little creases appeared when Wendy's brows drew together ever so slightly. No doubt the chronic migraine kicking up a level with so many people in her vicinity. Inara also noted how Wendy carefully avoided physical contact in the way she maneuvered herself around the table and into the chair Book held out.
"Welcome to the party," Book said, holding out the chair beside River for Wendy. "How are you feeling?"
"A bit better, thanks to your doctor." Inara watched Wendy send Simon an appreciative nod and along with Wendy, Inara turned toward the sound of an unimpressed snort from Jayne.
"Big deal. What'd he do, poke you with one of his needles?"
Inara was used to Jayne's way and knew the best course of action was to keep quiet and not encourage him. Unfortunately, Wendy did not know Jayne and had returned his snorted with a derisive one of her own.
"Anybody can do that."
Wendy rolled her eyes and shook her head. Inara saw that specialty look of Jayne's come across his face and gave an internal sigh.
"I got a needle I can poke ya with," Jayne said with a leer.
"Jayne..." Inara said in a warning chorus with several others.
Inara stared hard at Wendy, hoping to silently get her attention but Wendy had gotten herself drawn into Jayne's nonsense. "Nah, I'm good. You just keep your little needle to yourself."
"It ain't little," Jayne scoffed. Seeing things stumble onto shaky ground, Inara continued to stare at Wendy and included a warning shake of her head but Wendy didn't notice until after she'd rolled her eyes again.
'And here we go.' Inara glanced heavenward.
"It ain't! I'll show ya," Jayne protested, tossing his gun onto the table, his chair scraping back as he got to his feet and started for the fastening of his pants.
"No, no!" came Wendy's insistent reply as her hands shot up to block River's view.
"No! Jayne, no," Inara chimed in at the same time along with several others. She placed a hand on his forearm to gain his attention and get him to still his actions. He stopped and as Inara expected, looked disappointed.
"Jayne," came Kaylee's chastising voice. "What'd the Captain say about whippin' it out at the dinner table?"
Inara caught the accusatory look Jayne sent Wendy after falling back into his chair and Inara followed it with a look of apology toward their guest. Just then, Madison's newer crewmember came through the door and she thought she saw something flit over Wendy's composure. So minute and fleeting that Inara almost wondered if she'd imagined it. Intrigued, she returned to her previous study of the woman but was pulled from it when Dex spoke up.
"Careful, everyone might think you're compensating for something,"
Jayne's mouth opened and Inara's hand shot out to rest on his forearm. He looked toward her and she shook her head. Jayne grabbed his gun and sat back again in a huff, muttering something about guests and spacewalks as he resumed his cleaning.
"It's good to see you, and alive at that," "How is everyone holding up? How's Sally?"
Inara picked up her teacup and continued to observe, attention drawn to the newer arrival, wondering if he'd indeed managed to crack Wendy's careful composure and in his short time here, no less. He seemed a good sort, though something about him niggled at the edges of her conscience. The now cold tea hit her lips and Inara returned the cup to its saucer and got to her feet.
"Would anyone like some tea? Or coffee, perhaps?" she asked on her way to the small kitchen to refresh her own cup.

Mal had been listening in to most of the conversation, his headache back in full force. He had stopped by the infirmary to check on Sally, chatting with her some before heading up to meet everyone. He got there just in time-
"It ain't little, It ain't! I'll show ya," Mal didn't worry about Jayne exposing himself, not with Zoe there. She'd make sure Jayne kept it in his bunk and the chorus of no's seemed to get the message across.
"Jayne, What'd the Captain say about whippin' it out at the dinner table?" Mal smirked.
"Would anyone like some tea? Or coffee, perhaps?" Mal took a deep breath and let everyone respond. He needed a second to put his mask on, to hide those feelings he had for so long. Walking into that room with two mind readers and an experienced companion, he would be an open book. When he was sure his defenses were up, he walked into the room.
"Somethin' stronger if we got it. If Jayne didn't drink it all," He wanted to slap the back of Jayne's head but that would distract from the mission.

"Somethin' stronger if we got it. If Jayne didn't drink it all,"
"Second that notion," Dex nodded his head in Inara's direction as he put up his hand in a voluntary notion for a few seconds, "I'll have whatever the Cap' is having." Dex was trying to lay low in the group the best he possibly could, though this crew was full of personalities that were quite larger than what he was used to and as Dex appeared to comfortably mix among them discreetly he couldn't help but to feel overwhelmed by the large crowd in the small space as he sat loyally by Madison's side. If that wasn't enough to contribute to his fluster, his hard working attempts at avoiding eye contact in Wendy Carter's direction were failing as his gaze couldn't help but to catch her glowing presence every time his eyes scanned the room.
"'Scuse me, Mads, I'm gonna see if the kind lady at the kitchen needs any assistance," Dex grinned at his captain in his departure from the table as he trailed behind Inara, catching up to her by the small kitchen where she was fetching tea and drinks for the crews.
"Full house, isn't it?" Dex chuckled, feeling slightly more relaxed. It felt nice to get out of the loud, crowded space and take a breath of fresh air, even for just a moment, "Can I be of any help?" Dex asked as he watched her get together refreshments for everyone.

"Somethin' stronger if we got it. If Jayne didn't drink it all,"
"Second that notion," "I'll have whatever the Cap' is having."
"I'll take the tea, please," came Book's reply. The rest voiced their preferences and Inara kept mental track.
She was thankful that her back had been to the door when Mal had walked in. It saved her from the worry of how she would react when he first entered the room. She couldn't have wished for better timing than finding herself in the middle of launching into a bit of busy work.
"Tea as well as something stronger coming right up," she promised with a hostess smile that was as warm and welcoming as her tone.
Inara started looking through the cabinets. She was halfway through them when the voice of the one who'd managed to get a reaction out of Wendy sounded near her.
"Full house, isn't it?"
She took a moment to turn and smile a greeting as good manners dictated. "It certainly is. I enjoy seeing the familiar face of an old friend. And new faces as well," she said with a nod to indicate him. She continued to the next cabinet.
"Can I be of any help?"
"How kind of you to offer," she said, the tea kettle starting to whistle right on queue for assignment. Hands still rummaging in the next cabinet, she glanced over her shoulder at it then him. "Would you please take the kettle off the stove? We'll also need more cups." There were only the nine that were always at the ready for their crew set out on the counter.
Inara continued to the second to last cabinet and no luck. "Well, that isn't the first time Mal has called it," she said with amusement. It wasn't exactly a difficult call to make. Jayne often times polished off the stronger stuff. However, that did not mean they were completely out. Inara had her own, higher end brand she kept in the cupboard designated for her. It was the only cupboard Jayne didn't dare touch a second time since her early days when she'd caught him and had calmly and in an eerily pleasant tone informed him in great detail of the various ways she could render him useless for bedroom activities.
She retrieved one of the bottles and went to the counter beside Dex. "Luckily I keep my own supply." She placed it beside the other items and began preparing the cups of tea. Inara left the conversational window open to see where he'd steer it in her continued discreet study of him. She might not be able to pick up much from Wendy, but there was always a way to learn more by studying the people a mysterious person surrounded themselves with, or in Wendy's case, a person who'd gotten her to slip.

Wash never had any intention of seeing Jayne's gun in any form. Wash stayed silent and it was Zoe who spoke up, "Keep it in your pants or you'll soon be parted, get me?" Wash loved his wife, very much but those images were very graphic in his mind.
"That's an image."
"Would anyone like some tea? Or coffee, perhaps?"
"Water would be just fine, tea makes me relax and coffee tenses me up. I want to be in the zone for this mission." Wash knew he would need to be as sneaky and stealthy as possible. He wanted his nerves in check. Zoe took the offer of Coffee, she was feeling sluggish.

Unlike everyone else, River stood more intently in the whole situation. She was more curious and wondered if he would actually be brave enough to do it. Luckily, Jayne didn't get a chance to do it. Even if he did, Wendy was already covering her eyes before anything could be seen.
River was innocent, at this point in her life she had a child's curiosity about many things. Parts of her had been stripped away, she didn't feel certain things- embarrassment was a luxury at this time. They had tried to strip her of herself, she wasn't River anymore- not completely.
"Would anyone like some tea? Or coffee, perhaps?"
"Hooch," River knew that Inara wouldn't let her anywhere near the stuff, she smiled mischievously.

"It ain't little," Madison heard it a thousand times before, most men she encountered were average. She guessed Jayne was just that, he was certainly boisterous and over the top. "It ain't! I'll show ya," Madison decided there were enough people commenting on this subject, she kept silent.
"Jayne, What'd the Captain say about whippin' it out at the dinner table?" So apparently he has done this before, he certainly was a winner...
"Careful, everyone might think you're compensating for something," Too late for that...
"It's good to see you, and alive at that," Madison smiled when she felt Dex's hand on her shoulder, "How is everyone holding up? How's Sally?"
"It's good to be alive, I thought we were good as gone. We're doing well now, Sally needs more healing but she'll be back to her old self again soon."
"Would anyone like some tea? Or coffee, perhaps?"
"Tea would be wonderful, Mei-Mei."
"'Scuse me, Mads, I'm gonna see if the kind lady at the kitchen needs any assistance," Madison nodded and gave his hand a pat, it was nice to see Dex being a bit open.
Madison turned her attention to Wendy and smiled, she had such a grace about her. She had all the training, a proper companion learned every skill she could. Something behind those eyes said something different as if she had been forced to learn- molded.
"Hooch," Madison let out a chuckle, out of the mouth of babes. It took her only a few minutes to realize who this girl was, the wanted brother and sister. The story that was broadcast tugged at her heart and it was clear these two were innocent and good.
"I don't think you'll like it, little one."

Knowing Dex would be entering shortly behind her, Wendy had been bracing herself for it. And yet, when he finally did, it still managed to get a reaction out of her. What must he have thought of her, throwing herself at him like that? For some reason, she found importance in what he thought of her. She was just so drawn to him. She watched him from the corner of her eye. How could she not be? He was all kinds of her type across the board. She tried to remind herself that she shouldn't care and definitely should not be encouraging him if he felt what she was feeling. It wouldn't be fair to him.
Despite her reader abilities being off, her survival and Companion training still allowed her to sense she was being observed. Her eyes flitted toward Inara and though the Companion was discreetly studying Dex, she knew her discreet study had been on Wendy just moments before and that the reason it had shifted to Dex was because she'd managed to pick up on Wendy's draw to him.
Wendy neatly tucked it all away so that the other reader in the room couldn't pick up on it as well. She put her concentration on River, diverting it a moment to answer Inara's request for drinks with a "Tea for me, please." Hopefully it would help ease the migraine that had kicked up with so many people's emotions stabbing at her brain.
Though she did not look, she heard Dex tell Madison he was going to assist and felt him move away to do so.
"Hooch,"
Wendy's laugh mixed with Madison's chuckle.
"I don't think you'll like it, little one."
"No, you wouldn't," Wendy added on a laugh. The lifelong yearning to have someone to share this thing with, someone who could fully understand what it was like to possess this ability that was both amazing and a burden had her holding out a hand to River, despite her migraine. She suppressed passing on the feeling of the migraine as best as possible and conjured up the memory of the taste of one of the worse alcoholic beverages she'd experienced so that River could experience the memory of the taste without the full effects of it. Hopefully it would turn her off to trying any 'hooch' for a good while. She figured it was a small way to pay back Simon for all he'd done.
She waited for River to mentally absorb the experience before saying, "How does tea sound?"

"I don't think you'll like it, little one."
"No, you wouldn't," River had never tried it before, so she couldn't be sure. In fact, she was set on trying it. She wasn't so little anymore and not so little girls were allowed to try new things... right? When Wendy held out her hand she smiled and took it, she had no reason not to trust her. So when she got a mouthful of that bitter, disgusting, taste she nearly threw up on the table.
"Devil, the devil is in me!" River freaked out ever so slightly and she ran to grab a cup of water that Inara prepared for Wash and then filled it up again. She returned to the table with a fresh cup and grumbled.
"How does tea sound?"
"Tea, lots of tea, please." The last mouthful of water she spits back into the cup after swishing it around.

"Would you please take the kettle off the stove? We'll also need more cups."
Dex nodded and removed the kettle from the stove just as it began to sing it's song to let everyone know that it was here and ready. He watched Inara as she worked quickly to produce refreshments for her captain and crew. It was evident that these people on this ship were much more than just ship members co-existing in the same space - they were family.
"Well, that isn't the first time Mal has called it," "Luckily I keep my own supply."
Grabbing cups out of the cupboard, Dex peered over the side of the shoulder where Inara had come up to meet him at his side, retrieving a bottle from the cupboard. "I can see you're the brains of the operation, they must be lucky to have you around." Dex grinned in approval at Inara's act of resourcefulness before turning to place the cups down for the tea to be poured.

"I can see you're the brains of the operation, they must be lucky to have you around."
Inara smiled her appreciation then looked over at her shipmates with such care in her eyes before looking back to Dex. "I consider myself the lucky one," she said with easy modestly.
She poured water into a cup for Wash, watching the exchange between Wendy and River with fascination. "It's an amazing gift those two have." The reminder of how they'd been exploited for it brought a sadness to her smile and her voice. "And yet it brought them a hardship that others couldn't possibly fully comprehend. It's no surprise the two of them immediately bonded."
"Devil, the devil is in me!"
River started sputtering and Inara laughed lightly as the young reader came rushing over to down the water she'd just poured for Wash. River held the empty cup toward her and Inara refilled it then retrieved another cup for Wash as River took off with the other one.
"How does tea sound?"
"Tea, lots of tea, please."
Grinning, Inara began preparing another tea. "Speaking of immediate bonds," she began, doing her magic with the tea fixings while glancing from Wendy to Dex, "I couldn't help noticing the two of you going out of your way to avoid taking notice of each other." Her tone was light and sincere, no teasing or poking fun and casual rather than intrusive. The smile that accompanied it was much the same, giving an invitation for further discussion and advice if he so chose or a respectful willingness of a change of subject.

"I couldn't help noticing the two of you going out of your way to avoid taking notice of each other."
Dex paused his movements, his hand glued to a cup that he had just placed on the counter. Looking down at the cup, he chuckled inwardly and grinned bashfully. He wasn't about to outright lie and tell her that he had no idea what she was referring to, but he also wasn't going to offer his emotions up like an open book either.
"You're good, too good actually," Dex nodded as he spoke in a rather impressed tone, finally looking up at Inara, "So, who were you? Y'know, before you met these guys?" Dex pondered out of curiosity, as he finally handed her the empty cup in his hands.

Inara smiled, admiring the fact that like most people tended to do, he did not deny or make up reasons why someone may have misinterpreted what they'd observed. It was also quite endearing to see a big, handsome, strapping man looking bashful. She could definitely understand Wendy's draw to him.
Respectful of people's boundaries, Inara nodded her appreciation of his compliment of her observational skills and gracefully accepted the topic change.
She gave a light chuckle at his wording. "I am the same person now as I was then," she said, removing the lid from a fancy little jar and adding a pinch of its contents to one of the cups of tea as she spoke. "I grew up on Shinon, trained in House Madrassa, and remained there as a Companion. But I became restless. I'd spent my entire life on one planet, knowing there was this vast, endless universe out there. So," she said, giving a casual shrug as if leaving one's only familiar place and home to brave the unknown had been a simple feat, "I decided to go out and see it."
Also not one to be an open book, Inara followed suit and eased the conversation away from her and back to the present. "This one is for Wendy." She gave the cup she'd added the pinch to a stir. "What she's dealing with goes beyond any simple remedies but I hope it will help at least a little. She has been plagued by a migraine since before stepping foot on Serenity," Inara explained. She glanced up at Wendy for a quick assessment. The barely discernable strain on her face and the ghost of a crease between her brows were still there. They were tiny signs that the average person wouldn't pick up on but Companions were trained to read the smallest of signs in a person's features and body language. A sadness laced its way into Inara's demeanor and tone at the reminder of what Wendy had been through and at the thought that it was most likely the same path River would have been put on if not for Simon. "She hides it well. Having so many people in such close proximity must be difficult in her condition."

"...But I became restless. I'd spent my entire life on one planet, knowing there was this vast, endless universe out there. So,""I decided to go out and see it."
Dex raised his eyebrows as he listened attentively to her life story, short and sweet to say the least, "Adventure sure is contagious, trust me, I've been bitten by the bug for years." Dex had spared his own life story, as it came with details not only would most find complex but because he had to keep reminding himself to keep his focus on the game and the eye on the prize. He wasn't aboard this ship to make friends, after all.
"This one is for Wendy." "What she's dealing with goes beyond any simple remedies but I hope it will help at least a little. She has been plagued by a migraine since before stepping foot on Serenity,"
A mannerism that was put to ease with simple small talk became stirred with concern as Dex listened to Inara. His eyes followed her fingers as she sprinkled what Dex thought to be some sort of remedy into Wendy's cup and stirred it in. As she spoke, Dex peered over at Wendy who was enjoying the company of everyone else and found himself slightly disturbed to find out how much pain she truly had been through. He wanted to appear as such in order to keep his cover under wraps, because who cares what this traitor had been through, right? She was a dangerous criminal on the run, she needed to be stopped, she...
"She hides it well. Having so many people in such close proximity must be difficult in her condition."
The fight inside Dex's head subsided as Inara spoke up once more and knew that he needed to start working. "What's wrong with her? I mean, you know, why the headaches?" Turning to Inara, he commented with empathy towards Wendy Carter's mysterious illness and noted that he needed more information on what this might be. Perhaps it had to do with her lethal abilities, and just perhaps this conversation could lead him to her weakness that will allow him to take her down.

Inara paused to glance at him, recalling that he'd been late to the party. She usually avoided gossiping but he seemed to care and Wendy deserved as much caring as she could get in her remaining time. It would hardly make up for a life that Inara guessed was most likely completely void of emotional connections that family and relationships would have provided.
"It's difficult for her to talk about. I think Simon knows the most and because of doctor/patient confidentiality, it'll stay that way. She had to open up to him so he'd know how to treat her. To the rest of us, she hasn't said much. We know she is like one of our own. A reader," she explained since Inara and Madison were the only two who weren't strangers amongst the two crews gathered. "It seems they mostly get their readings on an empathic level.
"And like our crewmember, Blue Sun had gotten a hold of her. I don't know what they did to her, but I know what they did to ours." Inara looked back down to hide the anger in her eyes and continued mixing and stirring and preparing as she spoke. "She was extensively experimented on for the two years she was there. Something about engineering the perfect assassin. What better starting point than a person born gifted?" Inara discreetly glanced toward Wendy and River before continuing. "The only thing Simon mentioned was that Wendy has been at Blue Sun since she was eight. She'd only just gotten away." She let the thought of spending nearly three decades under those conditions hang for a silent moment. "They almost got her back, right here in the cargo bay, just as she'd arrived to ask for Simon's help." Inara didn't need to voice the obvious outcome. "I've seen signs of other extensive training; combat, weapons, intelligence gathering, technology." She paused again to calm herself over the one that angered her the most. "Even Companion training." It was something a person should choose and not have it forced upon them, especially with the intent of having her use herself in every way possible.
Their time for their little aside was running out. Inara pushed forward with answering his actual question. "Something happened to cause her to be dependent on pills made and provided to her by Blue Sun. I suspect she is trying to make what she has left last and that the migraines are due to the fact that deviating from the proper dosage is causing her to feel everything from everyone, all at once."
Inara picked up the tray that included Wendy's tea and handed to him, then picked up the other, pausing beside him with the recollection of the most important thing Wendy had actually shared with the group. "Oh, there was one more thing." She glanced again at the woman who was doing what she could to keep River at ease, despite being overloaded herself. River was going to be devastated and Inara had to admit she would be sad over the loss as well. The sadness reflected in her tone. "When she'd asked us to take her in, she said she wouldn't be burdening us for much past a week. Two if she's lucky," Inara paraphrased.
With the people at the table already starting to take notice that the drinks were taking inordinately long to prepare, Inara put a smile back on her face and quickly, yet still gracefully, turned the corner of the counter and began distributing drinks.

"To the rest of us, she hasn't said much. We know she is like one of our own. A reader....And like our crewmember, Blue Sun had gotten a hold of her. I don't know what they did to her, but I know what they did to ours..."
Dex absorbed these multiple revelations not only about Wendy but about the Blue Sun Corp. Being locked away for some time, he truly was not well versed on the on goings of the government and Blue Sun beyond what the Alliance had lead him to believe. The last he had heard, they had opened a special academy with exciting programs and opportunities for gifted and intelligent individuals. Speculations and conspiracy theories had circled within the system, but never in his wildest dreams would he thought of their illegal and inhumane methods to be true.
"I've seen signs of other extensive training; combat, weapons, intelligence gathering, technology."
"Something happened to cause her to be dependent on pills made and provided to her by Blue Sun. I suspect she is trying to make what she has left last and that the migraines are due to the fact that deviating from the proper dosage is causing her to feel everything from everyone, all at once."
As Inara was describing River's story, Dex was floundered with shock as he looked over at Wendy in silent disbelief. Everything she had said defined Wendy Carter's profile to perfection. He tried to keep his composure, but anger and disgust began to boil within him. To think that Wendy may have suffered the same treatment made him feel sick to his stomach. Torture and experiments, all to make perfect weapons of destruction. Any shred of humanity, tossed out the window. The Alliance had told him that Wendy was dangerous and due to her apparently extensive training in multiple areas he had been lead to believe that she was a danger to society. Yet, if these things really did happen to Wendy, then perhaps it wasn't the system's civilians that was in danger - but the Alliance's reputation. Dex felt a revolution on the rise, and after his eyes being open to a whole other side of the government he wanted to grab a pitch fork and join. But would it be worth sacrificing his promise of freedom?
"Oh, there was one more thing." Dex wasn't sure if he was prepared to recieve any more ground breaking news, accepting the tray that held Wendy's drink that was being passed to him in his dumb founded state,
"When she'd asked us to take her in, she said she wouldn't be burdening us for much past a week. Two if she's lucky,"
No, Dex's heart dropped as fast as a penny hitting the ground. The fact that Wendy was simply waiting to die at this point was world shattering. Wendy's expiration date making his job a lot easier never crossed his mind. All that ran through his mind was, there must be something that can be done. There must be something...
Realizing he completely spaced out in his distressing thoughts, he followed suit behind Inara as his current side mission was to deliver the drink to Wendy. He tried to force away the cloud of doom the best he possibly could, and what better way than to light up his face with a smile of sincerity as he approached Wendy gently tending to River.
"Uh, hey there," Dex tried to play it cool, holding the nerves at bay, as he nodded at River and then braved eye contact with Wendy, " One miracle elixir, stirred - not shaken," Dex grinned hardheartedly as he offered the cup to Wendy, "Sorry little lady, I think you're cut off from the bar for the night." Dex looked slightly apologetic in River's direction, giving her a playful shrug as he sat down next to Wendy. He couldn't help but to watch her in admiration as she took her first sip of her drink - for someone who was dying, her outlook on life in this very moment spoke different volumes. She seemed to be making the most of the moments she had left, but Dex knew she deserved way better than this. His gaze still on Wendy, his eyes appeared to glaze over as his expression slipped backward into concern. This couldn't be it. There must be something...

"Uh, hey there,"
Wendy was enjoying the wonderful distraction that River was. She knew River's reaction would randomly pop into her head, giving her a little chuckle whenever she thought on it. The two of them have been having their own aside conversation, much like the others in the room, all waiting for the meeting to start, when Dex's voice drew her. She looked up at him expectantly, trying to still clamp down on the embarrassment of having accosted him in the hallway.
" One miracle elixir, stirred - not shaken,"
Wendy grinned at him appreciatively, though there was curiosity in her expression over the proclamation of 'miracle elixir'. "Thank you," she said, carefully taking the hot drink, both avoiding spilling and letting their hands touch. She did not want to know what he was thinking, especially when it wouldn't be freely offered.
As Dex spoke to River, Wendy appeased her curiosity by sniffing the tea, detecting a scent that was familiar but that she couldn't place quite yet. She took a sip and closed her eyes to help her concentration go more toward her sense of taste. Finally placing it, she smiled, both for figuring it out and for Inara's kindness in thinking to add the helpful, yet very expensive ingredient.
"Kūqì de tiānshǐ," she said. Opening her eyes to find that Dex had settled beside her and was watching her, Wendy's thoughts stumbled for a moment. There were no other ways to draw in distraction, no other people to try to involve in the conversation. Kaylee had drawn River into a game that involved various hand signals. Perhaps some variation or adaptation of rock, paper, scissors, Wendy guessed.
She collected herself and concentrated on small talk. "The weeping angel flower is only found on a few planets. Many have tried to cultivate it for its ability to relieve pain but it's very particular to the soil it will take to. They grow very high up in the mountains, practically touching the heavens, hence one of the reasons that 'angel' is in its name." Babbling, she made herself take another sip, letting the warm liquid slide down and feeling the warmth spread throughout. Hot drinks had the tendency to comfort. She placed the cup down, her thumbs grazing the smooth ceramic and her eyes watching the hot liquid slowly settle after having just been put down. Wendy chuckled at herself over how ridiculously nervous she felt. She talked to men all the time. Had even gone through the proper grooming to do such things. "And I am probably boring you with an impromptu lesson in horticulture."

"One in a million," Dex beamed in awe, yet at this point he could have either been talking about the rare flower or the woman before him. Although he only played the part of the explorer, the genuine nature of Dex's true self shined through his persona as he listened to Wendy's story. Most plants take to the soil that they are cultivated and groomed in, but this one was special. And it appeared to be helping Wendy as she began to relax with ease.
"And I am probably boring you with an impromptu lesson in horticulture."
"Quite the opposite," Grinning, Dex shook his head insistently, "I'm always amazed by the diamonds in the ruff of this Universe. If most people just slowed down enough to enjoy them like you do, I think it might just be a more enjoyable Universe to live in." Dex remarked, drifting his gaze from Wendy to the two crews chatting along with one another to avoid being caught for staring too long, "And by the way," Dex tilted his head and threw a side glance in Wendy's direction, his hair falling over his forehead, "There's no possible way you could ever bore me." He spoke gently as he gave her a warm smile before slowly leaning back upright and pointed his attention to the group once more.
