"Quite the opposite," "I'm always amazed by the diamonds in the ruff of this Universe. If most people just slowed down enough to enjoy them like you do, I think it might just be a more enjoyable Universe to live in."
Wendy grinned, taking in that chiseled profile as he looked around the room. She'd always wanted a normal life to do just that. It had always been trainings, missions, reporting, and briefing. Slowing down and time to herself wasn't ever in the equation. The only momentary peace she ever got to relax and contemplate things was when she was recouping from playing the part of a lab rat and even those times were interrupted by nurses and doctors bustling in and out at all hours.
Now that she'd broken away and had the time to herself, it gave her more time to think and so far, she was finding it a very unpleasant pastime. With a majority of her memories being bad at best, she missed the distraction of always being active. Just as her mind was threatening another trip down the dark, haunting road of memory lane, his soothing, deep voice pulled her from it.
"And by the way," "There's no possible way you could ever bore me."
His smile and flattering words filled her with warmth and her fingers itched to reach up and comb the wayward hair back into place even though she very much liked how the look gave him a sexy, roguish charm. She'd take any valid excuse to touch him. If only her brain wasn't glitching. She leaned toward him, a playful and confident tone to her voice. "Oh, give me time, and I bet I could." With the vast amount of knowledge packed into her brain, she had no doubts about it.

Mal was always trying to think ahead, figuring out what to do but it didn't always look like that. His plans weren't always by the book but they worked themselves out. It was time to take the next steps and move this mission along, get things rolling, and get Wendy the help she needed. Mal wanted to do the right thing, helping others was right. Not everyone saw what they did as good but if it hurt the alliance in any way, he was for it.
Mal smirked as River got a chance to experience the taste of hooch, or something of the sort. Glad that Wendy could change the young girls' mind about drinking, though he wouldn't have objected for her to try. Some people took to it and others didn't- River was a smart girl.
"Thanks," Mal smiled when Inara handed him his drink, doing his damndest not to stare at her backside when she continued on- he failed. He knew he failed because he looked up to see Madison staring at him with a grin. Looking to his left Zoe was also starting at him with her eyebrow raised.
"So," Mal cleared his throat, "let's get back to the mission at hand."

Zoe had gotten herself mighty comfortable against Wash, she looked tired and Wash felt bad. All of them hadn't much time to just relax, he wrapped her up in his arms as everyone shared conversation. She settled in with a smile, chuckling when River started to freak out about hooch. Wash guessed it was some kind of telepathic bond but he couldn't be too sure.
Wash zoned out until he felt Zoe squeeze his leg, he followed her gaze to see Mal watching Inara a bit closely. "You think?" Zoe shrugged and smiled over at Mal.
"So, let's get back to the mission at hand." Wash and Zoe straightened up.
"Yes, the mission, the mission afoot."
"The mission is a foot?" Jayne scratched his head.
"Yes Jayne, it is a foot we seek." Wash played along, "if we find the foot on the planet, we defeat the evil alliance and the day is saved."

River was still too preoccupied with the taste in her mouth. She barely listened to anything around her, she focused on Simon and stuck her tongue out, her finger running down it. stopping only when she heard something about a foot and Alliance, "Alliance wants a foot?" She turned and looked at Wash, who shook his head with a smile.
Then she went back to trying to get the taste out of her mouth. Reaching into her pocket she pulled out a piece of candy she'd been saving. One of those hard candies and sucked on it, it helped a lot.
"Don't do that again please-" She pouted at Wendy.

Madison kept her eyes and ears open with the conversations around her. She liked having every bit of information on hand for every possible outcome, whether it be to her own benefit or others. She happened to notice a few things and one of those being, Wendy and Dex. When he was around she was easier to get a read on, she acted differently around him. She didn't know Wendy long but she could tell she was different around him, she would file that away for later.
Another, Inara had always been good at hiding things and she held herself well. It wasn't her that gave anything away but Captain Reynolds, the way he looked at her made it very obvious something was there. The sway of Inara's hips had caught Mal's attention in a way, his eyes following along as she handed the drinks out. When Inara came to her with some tea she smiled up sweetly. "Thank you, Mei-mei." Now was not the time to bring this up, they had a mission, and Madison was happy to help them. "Always so thoughtful," She had always been so giving, no matter the cost.

*Enters from Infirmary and Common Area*
Reaching the top of the stairs had been an adventure, a stupid idea she realized the moment it started. Yet, she wouldn't back down, she was already on her way. The closer she got to the dining area, the louder the voices became. She hung back and listened, that voice- Little Mal, it was him. She had lost track of everyone she knew on Shadow, she heard he had been taken by the enemy- after that nothing until the broadcast that changed everything. She stayed back, leaning against the wall in the hallway. She needed a second before she went in, wanting to make sure she didn't struggle her way here. Always a brave face, never let them see your weakness...

"Don't do that again please-"
Wendy's attention had been fully engrossed in Dex. She hadn't realized until River had pulled her from the distraction that she'd almost forgotten about everyone else. Apparently it had also helped to distract her from the onslaught of the others' emotions coming at her. Wendy looked over to River, an apologetic look on her face with a bit of amusement mixed in. "I'm sorry, mei-mei. Promise I won't."
Able to relax and enjoy the moment, thanks to her block seemingly deciding to work again, Wendy chuckled at the adorably exaggerated pout River continued to give her. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. Amusement fled her features and a gasp of surprise escaped her when an empathic shooting pain began pulsing through her leg, crumbling the mental wall and sending the emotions back in like a tidal wave. She paled and reflexively gripped the edge of the table as her head whipped toward the door, staring at something beyond it.
As discreetly as she could, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then nodded toward that something beyond the door. Wendy managed to sound calm as she announced, "Your crewmate could use some assistance." That was putting it mildly. The woman's leg was in bad shape and should not have left the infirmary. Wendy had to get a handle on getting her empathic blockade back up but had a feeling she wouldn't be able to until she could find the solitude that would allow her to concentrate on doing so.

Dex moved to the back burner of the conversation and allowed Captain Reynolds and the other crew mates to take center stage. Listen and observe, that was part of his objective. The other part was mass weapon of destruction, Wendy Carter, sitting right next to him. Boy, did she ever tug on the coal in the middle of his chest, giving his heart some life while making his under cover mission a bit more...complicated, in one word to describe the scenario. Yet, Dex not only didn't oppose, he allowed Wendy Carter to sway even his own morals and even make him consider abandoning his post. What he wouldn't give to just run away, never having to worry about the Alliance hunting him down for treason...
Suddenly, Dex felt Wendy tense up beside him as she coiled in pain. He could tell that she was trying to keep the pain she was in under wraps, but he noticed. After learning what he now knew about her, Dex wondered if this had something to do with what Inara was talking about. Turning to Wendy, Dex grew concerned as he noticed her hand gripping the table so tightly that it looked as if it was about to split. "Hey,hey...," Dex cooed gently as he came to Wendy's aide, placing his hand over hers that gripped the table in pain, "You okay? What is it?"
"Your crewmate could use some assistance."
Dex grew confused as Wendy's announcement was so sudden and...strange? He followed her gaze as it pointed towards the door of the lounge area. He had questions, many of them, but he took Wendy's word and flexed into proactive mode as he rose to his feet and high tailed it through the door. At a brisk pace, Dex rapidly entered the hallway to find Sally - in pain and leaning against the wall of the hall.
"Sally!" Dex blurted out rather alarmed as he ran to Sally's side. Dex could tell that Sally was putting on a brave front, yet he could tell that her body was going through absolute agony. Dex could tell that she was okay, yet still not well enough to be up and about. The fact that she had made it from the Infirmary to this point was astounding, especially in her condition. "Sally, you never cease to amaze me," Shaking his head, Dex uttered in a tone of relief as he wrapped her arm around his neck as he supported her upright and away from the wall, "You know Mads is gonna kill you for this, right?"

Jayne had been still thinking about the foot-thing in silence, as suddenly the door swang open and in came that other chick, her condition still far from being well. Wasn't the damn doctor able to keep his patients in check?
Also, Jayne had been noticing the looks between Wendy and Dex for quite a while already. He seriously started to be fed up with all the flying hormones around without him catching one bite only one time at least. That just ain't fair. He was tall and handsome and quite a catch - what was wrong with the ladies?
So, when suddenly Dex hurried to comfort Sally instead of keep taking care of Wendy, Jayne had nothing better to do than to throw a spiteful glance over at her.

Dex had gone to Wendy without hesitation. She wondered at the ease the two had taken to each other, both open and welcoming toward the other, despite having met such a short time ago. And both aware of the enormous, potentially heart breaking complication looming over them to top it off. Inara glanced down at Mal as she held out his drink and couldn't help but think how very different the situation had always been between herself and him. Years had gone by and they'd just barely nudged at the barrier between them.
"Thanks,"
Mal took the time to look at her and smile along with his thanks. Inara almost looked at him a beat longer than everyone else but managed to give him the same polite smile and slight nod of acknowledgement as she'd been giving and continued to give on her way around the table.
It wasn't that Mal didn't have manners. When the time and situation allowed for it, he usually showed gratitude in a captain-y stoic manner, even toned with little to no eye contact, slightly distracted with mind mainly set to the task at hand. Was the man trying to give away the very new development that had occurred between them? Inara smoothed any worries away with the reminder that unlike the average person, she was acutely aware of such minute things in a person's tone and mannerisms. The others had most likely not picked up on anything out of the ordinary.
"Thank you, Mei-mei." "Always so thoughtful,"
With the added compliment, Inara took the time to place a gentle hand on Madison's shoulder and smile her appreciation as she said, "You're very welcome." Her mannerism and tone also conveying 'I'm happy you're here'. Inara thought she caught a spark of interest flash in Madison's eyes. Having the same training, Madison could have read into the quick and subtle exchange that had occurred in a simple handing of a drink. Or Inara's lingering worry may have her imagining things.
"So, let's get back to the mission at hand."
Inara felt a hesitation in her previous conclusion that nobody outside of Madison might have caught wind of something. She didn't even have to be looking at Mal for the way he cleared his throat along with the sound of shifting to know something was off. Taking her seat, she'd concluded again that the simple 'Thanks' and smile couldn't have resulted in anyone picking anything up, especially not to the extent of the underlying discomfort she'd picked up on in that single throat clearing and that shifting. There was only one explanation she could come up with; the man had let his eyes linger after her.
"Yes, the mission, the mission afoot."
"The mission is a foot?"....
Inara was worried about the others finding out, especially at such a very early, fragile stage when doubts and concerns still played havoc on her mind. Yet she felt a warmth fill her at the thought that Mal had forgotten himself while in his very element. Inara took a seat next to Madison, placing herself between her and Mal several seats down so that her face would be turned away from Madison when Mal would be speaking, conveniently hiding any reactions that might sneak through. A precaution in case Inara had been right to think she'd spotted something in Madison's eyes.
'You're being sloppy, Mal.' While the rest were distracted with Wash and Jayne's back-and-forth, Inara sneaked a brief accusatory glance toward Mal over her tea cup as she took a sip, the simple, quick look conveying that thought but the ghost of a smile that lingered when her cup lowered said that though he was in trouble, she wasn't entirely upset with him.
"Your crewmate could use some assistance."
A sudden disruption pulled Inara's attention. She looked toward Wendy, picking up the telltale signs of pain, following Wendy's gaze to beyond the door and piecing together her statement.
Dex was quick to his feet and through the door, helping Sally the rest of the way to the dining area. Inara was just as quick to abandon her seat and pull the chair out for Dex to help Sally into it.

"Yes, the mission, the mission afoot."
"The mission is a foot?" And there it was...
Mal caught the glance Inara gave him, he wasn't being subtle but he was simple man. The gates were open and Inara had always been a distraction, whirled his mind about somethin' fierce. Now that they both had a taste of the future, he had no plans to hide it- much. Everyone knew his feelings, it was no secret he held a torch for her. Now wasn't the time, he slipped her a wink before turning his attention to Wash and Jayne.
"Yes Jayne, it is a foot we seek. If we find the foot on planet, we defeat the evil alliance and the day is saved."
"Wash," Mal was tickled by the jab at Jayne but this wasn't time to poke fun. "It's time to be serious, we have a short time and I need everyone to focus. This needs to get done," Mal stood at the head of the table and looked out at his crew and guests. "First, Captain Madison, seems to me your crew could use a bit of time for restin'? I have an extra room or two for your crew, so, feel free to stay on. Kaylee will fix your ship, Doc will look over Sally and-" And then just on cue the mood in the room changed.
"Your crewmate could use some assistance." Wendy looked distressed and it became clear what was happening once Dex found his way to Sally.
"Sally!" Once she was settled into the chair he walked over and knelt down beside her.
"Miss Whitewater, you look like ten miles of bad road." Her smile spoke volumes and she reached out to him and took him into a hug.

"Wash, It's time to be serious, we have a short time and I need everyone to focus. This needs to get done," Wash nodded his head, knowing this was serious but he just couldn't help but poke fun. He straightens up, sits back, and waits for the next step. He would be ready to help any way he could.
Wash didn't notice anything strange until Dex asked Wendy if she was okay. She did look rather sick, "Your crewmate could use some assistance." Things started to pick up when Dex made his way over, grabbing hold of Sally and bringing her over to a chair that Inara set out for her.
"Miss Whitewater, you look like ten miles of bad road." It was clear that Mal knew her, he just didn't know from where.

"I'm sorry, mei-mei. Promise I won't." River hoped so because that was horrible and she could still taste it. She closed her eyes to try and drive the memory from her brain and tastebuds.
Then the taste was forgotten, the memory forgotten, a shift and River opened her eyes and turned to see Wendy had paled. She could sense something was wrong, she could feel it too but not as bad as Wendy. The shooting pain was more like cramps to her, tiny pins and needles-
"Your crewmate could use some assistance." Reaching out she placed a hand on Wendy's arm and helped ease her pain. She wasn't sure how much she could help but Wendy helped her and she would do the same. She scooted closer and leaned against her, her hand going down to where the pain had erupted from and she just hummed before slowly speaking.
"Clouds and flowers, right? Just think pretty in the brainpan." She tried to give her the feeling of the warm sun, the smell of flowers, and a warm summers breeze.

Madison let herself enjoy the tea, taking a few sips and letting the calm wash over her. She needed a good cup of tea and Inara had that magic touch. No one made a tea quite like Inara, she had missed it's taste- she had missed these moments.
"First, Captain Madison, Madison perked up and looked over to Mal with a smile. "seems to me your crew could use a bit of time for restin'? I have an extra room or two for your crew, so, feel free to stay on. Kaylee will fix your ship, Doc will look over Sally and-" She was about to respond when Wendy spoke abruptly.
"Your crewmate could use some assistance." Sally...
"Sally!" Dex had already scooped up Sally and brought her over to a chair. Sighing, she closed her eyes and took a calming breath. Taking a sip of her tea and let the anger subside and annoyance. She was about to go to her side when Mal was there, kneeling down beside her.
"Miss Whitewater, you look like ten miles of bad road." They shared a hug and Sally was squeezing the life out of him. When they broke apart, Madison made her way over and place a hand on Sally's shoulder.
"I don't know what I'm doing to do with you, where is your babysitter?" Sally chuckled and waved her hand.

Sally thought she was in the clear, had a few minutes to just get herself together. Until she heard Dex, "Sally!" She sighed and smiled up at him with a brave face.
"I'm fine-" But he was already hoisting her up in his arms. She didn't argue as she was brought into the room, "Only way to travel these days, I surly missed your big strapin' arms." She kissed his cheek as he placed her down on the chair. "Thank ya kindly," She nodded to Inara for the chair, just as a familiar face walked into view. He was much older now but it was him, kneeling right in front of her.
"Miss Whitewater, you look like ten miles of bad road." Sally latched onto him and squeezed, she almost cried but held off.
"I thought I was seein' things, you've grown into a proper youngin'." They weren't far apart in age but Sally was older and treated him like a kid brother. "Not many of us left these days, from Shadow." Sally took sights of another familiar face, "Well I'll be," She grasped arms with Zoe as she neared, "I should have known you'd keep an eye on him. I'm guessin' the only reason he's breathing is you."
"Not far off, good to see you. Still stubborn I see?"
"Till the good lord taketh away, Zo-zo."
"Yep, still hate that." Sally's chuckle died out when she felt a soft hand on her shoulder, which tightened.
"I don't know what I'm doing to do with you, where is your babysitter?"
"Sleepin' like a baby, he's dead tired darlin'. I couldn't just sit down and do nothin', I've been laid out long enough." Sally took Madison's hand and kissed her knuckles, "I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long."

Wendy had felt the care and support through Dex's touch and had started drawing some calm from it, but his hand quickly left hers when he went to Sally's aid. That was okay. She'd be okay. Once Sally was settled into a seat, her pain would ease as would Wendy's empathic feeling of it. It was the surprise of not having seen it coming that had caught her off guard. Wendy was getting a good handle on it already. Jayne thought he was getting the better of her with his spiteful look but it went the opposite direction by serving to provide her distraction. Like a flick of a switch, she was able to hide any physical appearance of pain and smile sweetly at him, hopefully turning the tables and either confusing or pissing him off. Hopefully a combination of both.
"Clouds and flowers, right? Just think pretty in the brainpan."
River had moved closer and placed a hand on her where the pain was emanating from. While Sally was settled into a chair and had her reunion with Mal, Wendy looked to River and smiled. The pain was all but forgotten, a ghost of a throbbing. Like a minor cramp or pins and needles. Back to the normal level of an empathetic pick-up. This wasn't normal. The imbalances within her were getting worse.
She placed a hand over River's. "Thank you, mei-mei, for guiding me back to my happy place. All better now."
..."I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long."
Wendy's attention went back to Dex's crewmate. 'Full recovery, my ass,' she thought, having fully felt what the woman was feeling. Though she couldn't help admiring how well she was handling it. "Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive," Wendy said, pushing her still steaming tea across the table to the new arrival with a welcoming smile. She chuckled when she picked up a vibe of what the woman was thinking. "No, not whiskey."
She'd been happy to have the relief but the woman seemed to need it more. With the way Blue Sun had poked, prodded, and tested on her throughout her life, pain had been a frequent companion she'd learned to live with. But it seemed Wendy didn't have to worry about having given up her tea. She saw Inara head straight back to the kitchen and knew the Companion knew she could use it.

"I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long."
There was no doubt that Sally Whitewater was a fighter. Yet, her condition was still in a terrible state and Dex's heart wrenched as he witnessed the amount of pain in her eyes. No amount of grins and reassurances could hide how much anguish her injury was truly causing her. Stepping back, Dex gave Sally some space as she was crowded by others who were concerned and trying to help make her comfortable.
"Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive,"
Dex watched as Wendy's piping cup of her magic elixir slid across the table in Sally's direction. From what Inara had told him in the kitchen, he knew that Wendy truly needed it but refrained from letting his opinion slip. If Wendy found out what he knew, not only did he fear that feelings may change but Inara would probably have his head. Wendy's complexion appeared to have softened since she had taken a few sips of the tea, so Dex figured that she possibly had her fill and figured that Sally needed it more. He kept silent as he placed a gentle hand of gratitude on Wendy's shoulder, and just as everybody else his concerned gaze froze on Sally as she received the tea.
"So? How is it, Miss Whitewater?" Dex inquired after a few moments of silence as everyone had been waiting for the verdict, "Ya feel like a new woman?"

"Yes Jayne, it is a foot we seek. If we find the foot on planet, we defeat the evil alliance and the day is saved."
Jayne was no idiot - sometimes - and knew when he was the butt of a joke, and he had a feeling that this might have just happened. With a quiet grunting sound, he allowed Mal to get away with it, because what could he do against it anyway? After all, Mal was the captain and Jayne wouldn't like to get threatened with ending up as cargo that got thrown overboard again. And so he remained silent.
"Wash,""It's time to be serious, we have a short time and I need everyone to focus. This needs to get done,""First, Captain Madison, seems to me your crew could use a bit of time for restin'? I have an extra room or two for your crew, so, feel free to stay on." And Jayne had a feeling that their rooms would be bigger than his. Mal was providing way too much hospitality to these people if they asked him. If he was in charge, they would be scrubbing the deck and not walk around freely. "Kaylee will fix your ship, Doc will look over Sally and-"
Jayne wasn't really following the ongoing flow of conversation as he still had a feeling that these people meant nothing but problems - problems that actually had started ever since Simon and his wacky sister had entered their ship. If he was in charge... well, maybe that wasn't worth a thought for that probably would never happen anyway.
... "Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive,""No, not whiskey."
"So? How is it, Miss Whitewater?"
The annoyance on Jayne's features grew with every further moment, quiet grunting sounds already initiating that he'd be meddling at some point.
"Ya feel like a new woman?"
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?", Jayne suddenly intervened with a roll of his eyes and an embittered hiss. He was even sure that, if they had a luxury such as cookies, Mal would rather serve it to them than to his own people - the people that had been his loyal crew for a long time already. Well... maybe not always so loyal but that was not the point. He just felt like the kid that had been replaced by a new-born, or a bunch of new-borns. Not that he would compare himself to a fictive child from Mal. This was just a matelaphor... thing that meant to compare something to another thing. Wait, was that the actual meaning of it?

While Mal caught up with the new arrival, Inara had quickly put together another tea. Growing up as she did, Wendy was most likely used to pain, but that didn't mean her gesture had been any less kind. Inara studied Wendy showing only the guise of a friendly, warm smile as she set the tea in front of her. There was something more in the grin and nod of appreciation Inara received from Wendy in return. A sort of reassurance that she was fine. The way Companions learned to read and understand body language and expressions almost created another, unspoken language between Companions.
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?"
Inara and Wendy turned in unison to give Jayne a disapproving look. Not the only two of the group to do so, most likely. If she did have cookies on hand, she'd have handed the whole plate of them to Jayne to keep his mouth and attention occupied.
Tactless as his statement was, there was a point in it. Inara translated the urgency that they get going into a more tactful manner and gave a big push forward by laying out the details. "There is a doctor on that planet that we believe can help Wendy." She continued talking as she got back to into her seat. "We thought perhaps Madison's crew may like to collaborate. Captain?" she finished, letting Mal have the floor.

"I thought I was seein' things, you've grown into a proper youngin'. Not many of us left these days, from Shadow." Mal could only nod when Sally mentioned Shadow; the people left on Shadow had no chance. Mal watched the interaction between Zoe and Sally, chuckling at the old nickname Mal knew Zoe despised. What intrigued Mal the most, the interaction between the Shadowheart crew, particularly Sally and Madison.
"I don't know what I'm doing to do with you, where is your babysitter?" Sally had always gone her own way; on Shadow, she was known to bed not only men but women. Mal could see that it had not changed.
"Sleepin' like a baby, he's dead tired darlin'. I couldn't just sit down and do nothin', I've been laid out long enough. I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long."
“Same ole’ Sal.” He commented.
"Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive, No, not whiskey." He could see the disappointment on Sally’s face and shook his head.
"So? How is it, Miss Whitewater? Ya feel like a new woman?" And before Sally could say a comment, Jayne opened his mouth.
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?" Mal did not need to say a thing; most of the crew were already glaring daggers at Jayne.
"There is a doctor on that planet that we believe can help Wendy. We thought perhaps Madison's crew may like to collaborate. Captain?" Mal once again addressed the room.
Mal went on to explain the plan, laying out what needed doing. When he finished, he turned to Madison, “We got enough to make it work if you want to sit this one out.”

"I thought I was seein' things, you've grown into a proper youngin'." Wash had never heard anyone call Mal a youngin’ before; it was amusing.
“I bet you have stories, Oh, I can’t wait to hear’em.” Mal shook his head.
"Well I'll be, I should have known you'd keep an eye on him. I'm guessin' the only reason he's breathing is you." Wash decided now would be an excellent chance to introduce himself, but they continued the banter. Before he could say anything else, Captain Madison was already beside Sally’s side.
"I don't know what I'm doing to do with you, where is your babysitter?"
"Sleepin' like a baby, he's dead tired darlin'. I couldn't just sit down and do nothin', I've been laid out long enough. I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long." Wash was sure she was far from recovery, she just had surgery on her leg, and the infection was still in her body. She was in no condition to do much.
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?" Wash didn’t say anything this time, Inara was already stepping in. Madison had a few choice words as well.
The meeting was underway, and Mal laid out the plan, it was a good plan.
“We got enough to make it work if you want to sit this one out.” Wash waited to see Captain Madison’s decision.

"Thank you, mei-mei, for guiding me back to my happy place. All better now." River smiled, glad that she could help Wendy.
"I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long." Even River knew that was a lie. She shook her head and rubbed at her leg; it was still tight as she gleaned some of Sally’s pain.
“Mhmm, pins and needles.”
"No, not whiskey." At the mention of whiskey, River made a face and drank more water. Once everyone started talking, River found herself distracted by her thoughts. Mostly memories, everyone had so many memories. Happy, sad, pain- she closed her eyes and found herself leaning against Wendy.

"Sleepin' like a baby, he's dead tired darlin'. I couldn't just sit down and do nothin', I've been laid out long enough." Jeb had been doing all the heavy lifting; he barely slept since Sally got sick. She was concerned for them; she sighed when Sally kissed her knuckles. "I'm making a full recovery, Mads, nothing keeps this old girl down for long."
“Same ole’ Sal.”
“Same ole’ pain in my ass, don’t think you can sweet talk me.”
"Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive, No, not whiskey."
“Don’t think you’ll be getting anything but water from here on out.”
"So? How is it, Miss Whitewater? Ya feel like a new woman?"
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?" Madison liked this crew a great deal, but this man she was having trouble warming up to. Slowly she stood from the seat next to Sally and stared down at this man.
“Jayne, is it? Let me be perfectly clear, and I want you to pay adequate attention. If this were a tea party, I would be a hospitable host and treat all my guests with respect.” Madison spotted a pack of cookies wrapped in some gold foil, she grabbed them and placed them in front of the man. “Your cookies, enjoy.” Madison knew men like this, and she figured this would go one of two ways. He would make a comment and eat the cookies, or say nothing and still eat the cookies. Either way, his mouth would be occupied, and the conversation would now continue. Madison rejoined Sally and took her hand.
"There is a doctor on that planet that we believe can help Wendy. We thought perhaps Madison's crew may like to collaborate. Captain?" Madison listened to Mal speak, the plan sounded solid.
“We got enough to make it work if you want to sit this one out.”
“I don’t mind planting my feet for a time, and I could use a little less space.”

“Same ole’ Sal.”
“Same ole’ me, just a few years older and wiser.” Sally winked.
“Debatable,” Madison added quickly, which only made Sally laugh, which cut off when pain shot up her leg.
“jiàn tā de guǐ, that smarts,” Sally remembered what it was like when she first felt this pain. The injury to her leg was fresh; she had laid in that ditch for a long time before she was found. That war had defined her entire life, and the memories followed her even today. “Darlin’,” Madison moved her chair so she could sit next to Sally, a hand going up to run through her hair. It was a nice distraction, but the pain only increased.
"Here, drink this. It has a pain relieving additive," The hot cup of tea was pushed towards her, and she was skeptical. She hoped that relief was a shot or three of whiskey in there, it was one of the only ways she enjoyed tea. "No, not whiskey."
“Drink it,” Madison prompted.
“Ma’am, you’re breaking my heart.” Sally gave Wendy a nod of thanks, sipping slowly. “Tastes just like my mads, you companions got a gift.” Sally sent a wink to Inara and made sure to drink it. It wasn’t steaming anymore, so she was able to take it all back- like a shot. “Best to get it all in one go.”
"So? How is it, Miss Whitewater? Ya feel like a new woman?" The medicine started working rather quickly; the pain in her leg was subsiding. She didn’t get a chance to say anything before the large disgruntled man spoke.
"So, shall we serve some cookies to make the tea party perfect?" Men like this rubbed her the wrong way; she worked with me just like him. She would typically go back and forth, but Madison already had a silent hand on her. She sighed and said nothing, letting Madison take the lead.
“Jayne, is it? Let me be perfectly clear, and I want you to pay adequate attention. If this were a tea party, I would be a hospitable host and treat all my guests with respect. Your cookies, enjoy.” Madison could have done so much more, but they were guests on Mal’s ship. Maiming one of his crew would not go over well.
"There is a doctor on that planet that we believe can help Wendy. We thought perhaps Madison's crew may like to collaborate. Captain?" Sally sipped some water that was passed down to her from a nice older man, a preacher by the look of him. She listened to the plan and found it reliable.
“We got enough to make it work if you want to sit this one out.”
“I don’t mind planting my feet for a time, and I could use a little less space.” Sally wanted to be there, but no way would Madison let her off this ship. She would be stuck here for the time, and in truth, she knew it was for the best.

Simon sat patiently in the corner of the room and had quietly observed the conversation. Plans of perilous adventure, evading capture and launching onself into the jaws of death were not exactly his strong suit. Over the course of the time he'd been on board Serenity, he'd very much found his lane. He was a Doctor. He was a very good Doctor. He was a very good Doctor that happened to be part of a crew of...smugglers would probably be the most appropriate term. If he'd met anyone currently talking in the dining room 5 years ago, he'd have turned his nose up at them and wanted nothing to do with them. He now knew better. These were good people. Criminals sure but good people, that enjoyed pranking him every now and then for his undeniable...Alliance tendencies.
Simon finally spoke up.
"If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to be with the group going to speak to this Doctor. With all due respect to everyone present, nobody would be a better judge of their skills and knowledge than me. There's no point forcing this Doctor to come with us if they can't actually get the job done correct? Plus, if time really does become a critical factor, I can try and learn the relevant information from the Doctor then and there? There's also a chance that Wendy could have a lapse in moments of high stress and copious levels of Epinephrine."
Simon stood and flattened down his dark purple vest that tightly sat over his usual white shirt.
"Ready when you are Captain?"

Seated at the center of the long table, Kaylee payed close attention to the conversation going on around her. These new people reminded her of the crew she was currently a part of. River seemed to look up to Wendy. It was nice to see River smile and seem a bit more confident. While everyone continued to plan, Kaylee found her mind on this new ship, hopeful to get a look at it.
"Kaylee will fix your ship." With that said, her attention was drawn back to the rest of what the captain was saying.
The idea of working on a different ship was intriguing. Since joining the crew, Kaylee had really only done work on Serenity. Idly she wondered how bad the damage was, and if they would have the parts to fix the Shadowheart. First thing first, she'd assess the damage and work from there.
There's also a chance that Wendy could have a lapse in moments of high stress and copious levels of Epinephrine, " said Simon
Looking over to her right, Kaylee smiled at him. Simon was handsome, and kind. He was also very smart. Kaylee loved the way he looked out for River. He was generous with his time. It was just like him to offer to help out with seeing this other doctor. Hopefully he would be able to do just what he said, making a judgement call on whether or not this person would be in fact able to help them.
Wendy could surely use the medication. Maybe after they figured things out, she and Simon could have a little time alone. Who was she kidding, he was so much more than she was. Maybe the better course of action was to talk to Inara about him.
Looking back at the captain, Kaylee cleared her throat. "So when can I get a look at the Shadowheart?"

During all the back-and-forth, Wendy took the opportunity to zone everyone out and attempt to get back to only her own thoughts and emotions intruding on her person. The only difficultly she was having was zoning out the distraction beside her. Dex had managed to grab hold of her attention from the moment she'd met him and she was having trouble shaking him from it. River had leaned against her, lending the peace and distraction she needed with the gesture that she assumed must be the feeling of sisterly affection. She grinned down at River's head on her shoulder but was then pulled back into the moment when the Captain addressed the group with the plan.
She distractedly sipped at the tea Inara had given her as plans were laid out, feeling a bit better by the end of Mal's address to the group when she placed the now empty cup back on the table.
At first, Wendy wanted to interject and deter him from taking the risk, but then he laid down one logical reason after another, each more compelling. Still though, she would have a private word with him to be sure and to weigh in on the risks if Mal didn't object to his going.
"Ready when you are Captain?"
Simon didn't really leave room for objection, but that didn't mean the decision was final. The room was starting to get into motion, everyone preparing for their part in all this. "Your brother really is amazing, isn't he," she whispered to River just as the girl was lifting her head from Wendy's shoulder, freeing her to get to her feet along with a few others in the room.
"So when can I get a look at the Shadowheart?"
Wendy procrastinated in leaving the room, wanting to exit shortly after and in the same direction as Simon in order to get that aside with him. She busied herself with clearing the table, grabbing an armful of cups and making her way to the little kitchen as people broke off into separate conversations or got to their feet. She discreetly kept her attention on Simon as she started on the dishes.

“Jayne, is it? Let me be perfectly clear, and I want you to pay adequate attention. If this were a tea party, I would be a hospitable host and treat all my guests with respect.” “Your cookies, enjoy.”
Dex was well aware that Mads could hold her own. However, out of protective reflex, he couldn't help but to relax a single hand neatly on the holster that sat upon his hip. At the end of the day, he knew this Jayne was rather harmless. However, Dex had been rubbed the wrong way by him since the moment they encountered one another. If he uttered one more word of disrespect especially towards his Captain, Dex would be the first to cram the rest of the cookies in the bad boy's mouth to keep him quiet. He grinned to himself as he watched Mads proudly take Sally's hand, as things should be.
"If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to be with the group going to speak to this Doctor. With all due respect to everyone present, nobody would be a better judge of their skills and knowledge than me. "No objections from me, Doc. As your voluntary bodyguard, I'll ensure that you'll get your part done and back to your sister all in one piece," With upmost assurance, Dex gave Simon a pat on the shoulder. He would insist on personally protecting Simon while the task was in motion, as long as it meant that Wendy got to live another day. He was looking for his way to help her, and this was it.
"Ready when you are Captain?"
Dex's attention turned to Mal along with the rest of the crew, and as everyone climb to their feet in unison they began to spin things into motion. As everyone began to break off into their roles, his gaze panned the room for Wendy. Dex spotted Wendy's backside momentarily before she disappeared into the kitchen with an arm full of dishes and plates. He looked to the table where they had all conversed around that had been tidied clean, all except for one empty glass. Sweeping it off of the table with his large hand, he walked into the kitchen. He caught Wendy at the kitchen sink, preparing the water as tiny suds circled around her perfect, curly hair. Leaning a single shoulder against the frame, Dex stood in the doorway and shed a smitten grin, taking in the beautiful sight.
"Hey," Dex piped up casually, unmoved from the door frame as he smiled at Wendy. He raised the empty glass in his hand and waved it, "One got away."

Of course, Jayne noticed all those daggers that got figuratively thrown his way, but this was nothing new, nor something he would really mind. For some reason, people tended to do that with him. At some point, he had stopped to ask himself why that was. However, when that Madison chick stared at him, a silly grin formed around his lips while his eyes said something that he - fortunately - wasn't actually saying out loud.
“Jayne, is it? Let me be perfectly clear, and I want you to pay adequate attention." And yet again, his eyes spoke a silent language. If he gave voice to it, that probably would have been something like 'adequate attention is the least you can get from me, babe'. "If this were a tea party, I would be a hospitable host and treat all my guests with respect.”“Your cookies, enjoy.” At that, a rather uninterested hiss left him, before he turned his attention away from her... granted, at those cookies. Another hiss, and then he grabbed a handful and started to occupy his mouth.
"There is a doctor on that planet that we believe can help Wendy. We thought perhaps Madison's crew may like to collaborate. Captain?"
“We got enough to make it work if you want to sit this one out.”
“I don’t mind planting my feet for a time, and I could use a little less space.”
Jayne munched some cookies while the others continued with the conversation, every now and then looking up at the current speaker.
"Great..." Jayne muttered and let the cookie he just had taken into his fingers fall back onto the table, sure that he himself would be part of the team who will be going. The last time they took him with them on a mission had brought him into trouble with Mal.
"No objections from me, Doc. As your voluntary bodyguard, I'll ensure that you'll get your part done and back to your sister all in one piece,"
"Ready when you are Captain?"
"Fine. Now that the babysitter job's assigned as well," Jayne suddenly had to add his two cents, after all, standing up and tossing the rest of the package with cookies over at Dex with a sarcastic grin. "I'm gettin' Vera so we can head out."
Jayne wasn't giving anyone the time to react to his comment, not even Mal, and instead just left the round to head towards his bunk.
*** Jayne exits ***

Simon was still lingering at the table so Wendy continued with the dishes, happy to give him all the time he needed in exchange for this rare moment of normalcy. She squatted down a bit toward the counter to set the armful of cups down, careful to not let any tumble to the floor.
Keeping half her attention still on keeping track of Simon's movements, she put her other half into the task at hand. Plugging the small sink, she turned on the faucet and poured in a little dish soap then grabbed a cup and started scrubbing it down in the water.
It was only a couple minutes before someone else completely stole that first half of her attention, and even some of the other half. Wendy could feel Dex there before he spoke.
"Hey," "One got away."
The grin that had unknowingly found its way onto her face when she'd felt his presence bloomed into a smile as she glanced over at him waving the glass. "Thanks for rounding up the stray," she said, looking back down as she shook the water from the cup and put it aside to dry. She looked back again to find him simply observing her, his big, handsome frame still leaning against the frame of the kitchen area. It filled her with a warm, fuzzy feeling that had a chuckle bubbling up. "Well come on then, Cowboy, I don't bite. Bring it on over." She held up her hands, dripping with soapy water to show why he had to be the to make the full move over.
Dex liked her. She could tell that without her gifts. It was being hit by their mutual attraction, feeling the full force of both ends of it when his hand had brushed her face that had had her rashly take action back in the corridor. She shouldn't be flirting with him. She really shouldn't be encouraging anything at all. Wendy turned her attention back down before letting the happy smile slip into a polite one, turning off the flow of water as the sink had filled enough.
