Great Hall
A vast chamber with an enchanted ceiling that mirrors the sky outside. Four long tables occupy it, one for each of the four houses. Closest to the doors from the Entrance Hall is Slytherin, then Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and next to the far wall, Gryffindor. The teachers sit at the High Table, a table on a raised platform at the front of the room. Hundreds of floating candles provide light for the room.

Laura
She headed toward the great hall, well aware she would probably be the last teacher to arrive. At least she’d manage to get there before the students. Laura had yet again lost track of the time while reading, but in her defense it was a new book by one of her favorite authors. Of course she’d lose track of the time.
As soon as she entered the Great Hall, she realized she wasn’t the last faculty to arrive. All of the teachers involved in helping the students arrive were gone, of course, but also missing was Headmaster Ogden and Professor McCormick, both of whom were typically on time or early to the sorting and feast.
She took her seat, wondering what was keeping them and trying not to worry. After all, being late and being in a dire emergency were two different things. She was sure both Nicholas and Marius were just fine, and their friends were too. Surely they’d just lost track of time like she had, and weren’t in the middle of some very important, very delicate task. She sighed, unable to keep glancing at the doors every few seconds. Hopefully, they would arrive soon, and her worry would all be for not.

Headmaster Ogden
Standing in the side chamber of the Great Hall the three of them could see the young first years being lead through the doors at the far end while the older students started to quiet down in their seats. "We are just in time." Marius stated with a confident nod of his head. The other staff had mostly assembled at the head table and as Professor Longbottom stopped his troop just before the platform that wonderful old Sorting Hat started to sing his song. "Anya you will not miss a thing from here and we will be just outside, my dear." With a snap of his fingers a dinning table and chairs appeared for her. "Dinner will be served shortly, I will join you again as soon as I deliver my speech. Then I will answer as many of your questions as I am able." With a warming smile he then straightened up to his full height and looked Professor Boyle in the eyes for a moment before opening his mouth. "Shall we?"

Kaeden
Kaeden froze as she saw the room before her. Four long tables filled the room, each with a different banner hanging above it, but there was no ceiling, only the night sky shining down on them. Students filled the tables, and the Professors had their own at the front of the room. In front of this table were the younger children Kaeden was supposed to be with. She quickly joined them at the back of the line.
Professor Longbottom looked around anxiously as did a few of the other professors. Suddenly, someone starting singing, and it took Kaeden a moment to realize the voice was coming from an old beaten up hat sitting on a stool. A singing hat? Filthy magic.

Nicholas
*Enters from Hogwarts Entrance Hall*
He follows the house elf down some hallways until he comes to the room that adjoins the great hall. This is clearly where the headmaster is. “Thank you Radbey,” he says.
“Of course Master Nick,” the house elf says before disappearing, off to help in the hectic kitchen no doubt. Nick takes a deep breath, hoping he doesn’t look as bad as he feels. Well, nothing he can do about that now he supposes. He opens the door and steps inside, seeing the headmaster, a man he can only assume is the new potions teacher, and an older girl. Someone new for the headmaster’s program no doubt.
“Headmaster Ogden, may I speak with you for a moment?”

Severus let the Headmaster lead them the way into the Great Hall, let him believe, that this was the first time he walked down this path, though in fact he walked it hundreds of times. The annyoing din and voices already could be heard. Severus rolled his eyes behind the hide of his sunglasses. But even if he was kind of annoyed about it, it brought back memories to him. Not only memories from his teacher years, also from the years he was a student at Hogwarts himself. The years with Potter and his fatuous friends, Black and that other Animagus. The years with Lilly...
"We are just in time.", the Headmaster's voice brought him back to present. Severus had a short look over the head table, as he suddenly hold his breath. There was a familiar face, just stopped the troop of students before the platform with the Sorting Hat. It still was overwhelming to use his eyesight, even if it was not entirely back. So sometimes he felt the need to scan everything around, before it will be covered in black again. But this familiar face... Could it be, that it was that goofy Mister Longbottom? At least he wouldn't be able to recognize him as Professor Boyle. Suddenly the hat started to sing his annoying song. Well, this old rumpled cloth seemed to never tossed overboard. This was one of those parts Severus hadn't missed at all. "Anya you will not miss a thing from here and we will be just outside, my dear.""Dinner will be served shortly, I will join you again as soon as I deliver my speech. Then I will answer as many of your questions as I am able.", the Headmaster directed towards the girl, which had accompanied them the whole way. Probably a newcomer. "Shall we?", he then turned around to Severus with a deep look into his eyes or at least into the deep black of his glasses. " Of..." “Headmaster Ogden, may I speak with you for a moment?”, suddenly an unfamiliar voice cut him off. ... course, Severus ended up inwardly, exasperated flashed his eyes at the other Professor, which couldn't be seen behind the sunglasses at least. But he also wouldn't have made a secret out of it, if he hadn't worn them. Severus hated it like the plague, when someone was cutting him off. Teeth-gnashingly he stood behind the two men, wordless. Biding.

Tharin
***Enters from Hogwarts Entrance Hall***
Tharin looked over the beautiful scene before him. Everything was bright and alive, and everyone was excited for the new year to start. The first years were all lined up with the girl at the back. Tharin looked away from her and claimed his seat at the Slytherin table.
"Well hiya Tharin, 'bout time you showed up. Where've you been hiding?" Another Slytherin boy asked him.
"Prefect buisness, Garrett." Tharin answered.
"Oh I see how it is, not gonna say." Garrett crossed his arms and pouted for a second, then leaned forward with a mischievious smirk, "Well if you're not going to tell me where you've been, could you tell me who the new totty is in the line of first years?"
Tharin looked back at her, and then looked around him. Most of the students were taking glances and talking about her. Certainly the headmaster would give a reason for her being here at such a late age.
Tharin looked back at his friend and smiled, "I'm afraid that's prefect business as well, my friend."

Once someone other than Marius had joined them, Anya had resorted back to her usual self. She remained quiet, observant, aloof, automatically suspicious of those around her. Her features remained unreadable. The less someone could discern about her, the less they can use against her. Overall, the general read people got from her was unapproachable and disinterested. Definitely not shy. Marius had been the only exception as he'd first happened upon her at a vulnerable state and to top it off, had helped her escape from the life she'd hated, a life of stealing and lying, to this one of magic.
"We are just in time."
Just in time for what? she wondered. He ushered her to the opening and the sight before her had her unreadable expression turning to awe. Mouth slightly agape, she looked into the giant room where masses of students lined four never ending tables, millions of stars and floating candles making up the ceiling.
"Anya you will not miss a thing from here and we will be just outside, my dear." "Dinner will be served shortly, I will join you again as soon as I deliver my speech. Then I will answer as many of your questions as I am able."
When he snapped, she looked behind her to see a table and chair appear and couldn't help but crack a smile before composing herself to her normal demeanor. A singing started, drawing her eyes back to the great hall and she looked in the general direction of it, at each face sitting at the table that watched over the room of students to see who was singing the funny little song. Most of their eyes were drawn to a single point and she followed it to a hat sitting, or rather bobbing, on a stool as folds in the material made up two dents for eyes and a deeper dent which acted as a mouth. "Huh. A singing hat." She paused and cracked another smile. "And why not," she said in amusement to herself.
Her attention was on the scene before her and she barely registered a new arrival to the room along with further conversation. She leaned slightly forward for a better view of the hall to try to see an end to the miles of tables, finally spotting it. It went so far that the students furthest away looked tiny even though it appeared the seating was arranged by the youngest and therefore smallest at the front and the oldest and therefore biggest toward the back. How was the rest of the world unaware that this world existed when so very many people were a part of this world of magic? When she felt the curious eyes of a few students upon her, she shrank back to watch from the shadows of the doorway.

Headmaster Ogden
Before the two teachers could proceed into the Hall, another, Professor McCormick appears by their side. “Headmaster Ogden, may I speak with you for a moment?” With a quick glance into the large chamber the hat droned on and the Headmaster could see a few more stragglers at the far end making their way to their seats. They had a moment. "Please Nicholas, you have my ear." He said with a warm smile.

Nicholas
"Please Nicholas, you have my ear." He casts a quick glance at the new teacher and student, thinking that this may not be something that should be spoken about publicly. He supposes everyone in the school will end up finding out eventually though, and the student seems enthralled with the sorting hat and is thus not paying attention. As for the teacher, this is probably something the headmaster will bring up in some sort of meeting anyways. He might as well just tell him. Though of course now he realizes he doesn't exactly know what to say. When will this terrible day be over?
"There was a fight and one of the students involved keeps lying and trying to evade authority figures," he states. Well, looks like he's going with the direct approach like he usually does. "I wasn't sure whether it necessitated immediate attention but I do know it requires more than an ordinary teacher." There, he's told the basic information. Now it's up the the headmaster to ask questions about it or leave off asking questions til later. He suspects it will be the former. After all, he'd be curious too. Who was in the fight, how bad was the fight, why had Tharin said Arizona? He'd forgotten to ask the lad that. He'll have to do that later, after the stupid ceremony and pointless feast. It looks like this day is determined to last as long as it possibly can.

Carter
*Carter, Drew, Gwen, and Oliver entered from the Entrance Hall*
Drew was walking off, but he must be terrified. Carter ran up to him, not wanting him to be worried. “Hey Drew, you could sit by my brother.” Justin would protect Drew, Carter knew. “But don’t worry, you’ll be okay.” Because Drew was no longer her target; Carter was. Speaking off … “Sorry,” he added, before he was forced to leave Drew. Being in different houses could be a pain, but at least he shared a house with Gwen and Oliver. He caught back up with the older students.
“Can I sit with you guys?” he asked, trying to sound unworried, when really he was freaking out. If they said no, and he was sitting alone … who knew what she would do to him? He needed to be with the older students for protection. “I don’t want to be a bother, but if you wouldn’t mind.” He looked down at his shoes, desperately hoping they’d let him stay with them.

Drew
Carter runs to catch up to him instead of going strait to his table. “Hey Drew, you could sit by my brother.” As if. Drew does not need to sit by the older boy just to feel safe. He is a brave Gryffindor and he does not need to be with Carter's older brother to be brave. “But don’t worry, you’ll be okay.” Yes he knows he'll be okay because he's brave and he can handle anything. Because if he can't then being put in Gryffindor was a mistake and he's not really that good at anything. “Sorry,” Carter adds before finally heading for his table. Sorry? Sorry for what? Drew was the one being a moron, what was Carter sorry for? Looks like he'll have to ask later. For now he goes and sits with some other third years at his table, waiting for the feast to start.

Always observant of her surroundings, Anya listened with half an ear to the conversation as she watched the hat prattle on. Something about a fight and an unruly student. She didn't think anything of it. What was a school without an unruly student or two? Even a magic school would presumably have the same general issues of the ones she'd attended.
Deciding the conversation was nothing of real importance, she put her attention back on the great hall. Kids had lined up for something. What though? They seemed to be the youngest and the front of the line was near the singing hat. The children watched it, some in fascination and some with trepidation. Okay, so apparently this hat did more than sing and by the expressions of those watching the hat with nervous energy, this crazy, singing hat seemed to have more power over their fate than any garment should ever have, singing or no. She almost gave a snort of laughter at the thought.
Her eye caught on an older girl toward the end of the line. She stuck out like a sore thumb, towering over the tiny newcomers. Unlike herself, the girl didn't seem surprised by a hat singing or amazed by her surroundings. No, she looked at the hat in disgust. Anya could only assume she was new to this school but not to the world of magic.
She found herself to be immensely grateful that she, too, wasn't standing in that line. The stares and attention would have driven her mad with discomfort and she guessed she'd be looking just as peeved as the older girl appeared to be.

Kaeden
The many stares aimed at her made her skin crawl, and the continuous singing of the hat was driving Kaeden mad. She wished she had held onto her knife better. She would rip that stupid hat to shreds if she could. Looking around for something to distract her from her hat destroying thoughts, she locked eyes with an older girl observing her. The curiousity in her eyes was sickening. She must be some special agent from the ministry there to keep track of Kaeden.
I know you're there, and I am not a science experiment! Kaeden allowed the anger she felt to be present in her eyes and then flipped off the agent. She heard a few gasps come from the students closest to her, but Kaeden kept her glare on the agent.

Distracted, Gwen almost didn't hear Oliver as she watched Drew hurry to the table where the Gryffindors were anxiously anticipating the sorting. As it was though, Oliver's voice did break through, causing Gwen to blink in surprise as she had just about forgotten the other Ravenclaw was there, "Thanks for that. Though I do think I'll be okay I suppose."
"Oh, weren't nothing. Ye should still get it tended to though." She glanced back to the Gryffindor table, finding relief that Drew had settled in with his classmates before she gave Oliver her full attention. Well, most of her attention. It was likely she'd be stealing looks towards her younger brother during the entire ceremony and feast. She'd already failed him once that day, she'd be hanged if it happened again.
"Any chance you know some kind of spell to shrink a tray down to size?" "I hate to keep bringing Jake such boring selections just because I can't fit more to last him."
She barely had to give it any thought, "I know just the thing-" Before she was able to finish, Carter came bounding back up to the pair. “Can I sit with you guys?” Bless his heart, he tried valiantly to seem nonchalant but the boy wasn't fully able to cover the fear laced in his voice. Guiltily she realized that with all her worry over Drew, Gwen hadn't given much thought to the toll that the incident on the train had taken on his friend. “I don’t want to be a bother, but if you wouldn’t mind.”
"'Course ye can. Yer never a bother, Carter." She placed a hand on his shoulder, leading him towards the table where the other Ravenclaws were already gathered. If she couldn't directly comfort her brother, she could at least watch over his best friend. Catching Oliver's eye over her shoulder, she sent him a wink. They'd get Jake a part of the feast and then some. They would just have to get creative about it.
A few students slid over on the bench to make room for the three new arrivals. It was only then that Gwen realized how odd it was that the Sorting Hat was still singing. 'Odd, but good news for us.' A rather awkward silence had descended on the three of them, Gwen never having spent much time with Drew's best friend without her brother around and his presence preventing her from continuing her conversation with Oliver. But it was obvious that the boy needed something to take his mind off of the events of the day. Quickly, she cleared her throat while her mind raced to find a topic. As usual, the first thing that popped into her mind was school, "So Carter, I hear ye 'ave quite the talent in Herbology..."

Anya's eyes widened as the girl flipped her off. She glared right back and returned the girl's American one-fingered salute with the British equal of a two-fingered salute before looking elsewhere and completely ignoring her. No longer feeling sorry for the girl, Anya crossed her arms as she leaned casually against the door frame, looking quite comfortable in her semi-hidden spot away from stares.

Kaeden
The agent's eyes widened and then returned Kaeden's glare, but she showed a peace sign before purposefully avoiding looking at Kaeden. Kaeden smirked, though a little confused, and crossed her arms. Now if only that insistent hat would just shut up. The idea of grabbing it and leaving the castle to drown it in the lake was looking better and better.

Sydney
The sorting hat was one of Sydney's favorite parts about the welcome back feast. She hummed and lightly bounced along to the hat's song. For some odd reason, Professor McCormick always had a sour expression on his face during it, but neither he nor the headmaster were present this year. Maybe they had a surprise for everyone? Sydney hoped it was a good one, like a new magical creature discovered!
Sydney liked to see how happy everyone was to come back, so she looked behind her to see all the smiles. Then she tensed up, she didn't know whether to run and help, or to let the older kids coming in late tend to themselves. A Ravenclaw boy had blood on his face, and another Ravenclaw girl was helping him to the table. A younger kid, in the same year as Sydney just looked terrified. After a quick glance at Madame Ellis, Sydney hopped up from the table and hurried toward the Ravenclaws.
Tapping the older boy lightly on the shoulder, she quietly asked, "Are you okay? What happened? Do you need to go to the infirmary? I have a key."

Oliver
As they took their seats he noticed more than a few sets of eyes on them. Looks like slipping in under the cover of the sorting hat was not to be. Carter accompanied them so his conversation with Gwen would have to wait. When it came to it they would have to make up something about hiding some food away. It wouldn't be hard though he thought since more than a few students did the same for their own reasons.
It was at that point that Oliver's thoughts were interrupted by a younger girl who slipped from her seat to address him. "Are you okay? What happened? Do you need to go to the infirmary? I have a key." Come to think of it, he didn't know her name. A Hufflepuff and he had seen her around before but he was drawing a blank. "Thank you but no, I will be okay until after the ceremony. I might take you up on that though afterwards." Burke smiled to show his appreciation but at that point it sounded like something was happening. The hat's singing had ended rather abruptly.

Headmaster Ogden
"There was a fight and one of the students involved keeps lying and trying to evade authority figures, I wasn't sure whether it necessitated immediate attention but I do know it requires more than an ordinary teacher." Marius furrowed his brow as the smile left his face. Every new year with the elder students coming into Hogwarts under his care presented new problems to be overcome. He would need to see to this. Especially when he noticed Anya and the other first years exchange from the base of the dais in the main hall. Placing his hand on Anya's shoulder he kept his eyes on Nicholas. "You and I will take care of everything, after the feast of course. We have kept them waiting long enough." Ogden knew his colleague was expecting further questions but he liked to keep people guessing sometimes more than others.
The headmaster smirked with approval as he saw the late comers take their seats. Nodding to the hat it then stopped singing and cleared its voice of a slight rasp, looking somewhat relieved. With a gentle squeeze of her shoulder Marius let go of Anya and gestured for the professors to join him as he strolled out to stand behind the Sorting Hat's stool. Letting their presence sink in, the voices of the students gradually hushed just in time to let the hat be heard once more, "It's about time you showed up, Headmaster..." With a smile Marius did not discourage the laughter of those close enough to have heard.
With a raise of his hand, the candles above the hall dimmed slightly and they were instead bathed in the light of the stars and constellations that really began to pop overhead. "I am grateful that once again I greet you and marvel as your attendance rivals the display you can see before you. For those of you joining us for the first time, Welcome! You are about to take part in a time honored ceremony that will see each one of you joining one of four great houses. They will be your family and will nurture the wonderful virtues and talents that make you who you are, and what you will become in your time here. Each one of us that stand before you now who have come before you, dedicate ourselves to you. You who are the future truly number as many as the stars that guide our way and have always served as a beacon of hope." As Marius finished his sentence the symbols of each house; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin appeared out of those stars. "Know that by those beacons you will reach your goals, so take heart and have no fears. And of course... enjoy the feast!" Taking a step back the Headmaster relinquished the stage to Professor Longbottom and the Sorting Ceremony began.

"Thank you but no, I will be okay until after the ceremony. I might take you up on that though afterwards." The older boy smiled, but then he quickly looked towards the front of the room. The sorting hat had stopped singing.
"Eeep!" Sydney hurried back to Hufflepuff's table and reclaimed her seat. It took her a few seconds to actually focus on what the headmaster was saying.
"...the wonderful virtues and talents that make you who you are, and what you will become in your time here. Nick
"You and I will take care of everything, after the feast of course. We have kept them waiting long enough." Intellectually he knows that is probably the best decision but that doesn't mean he has to like it. He really doesn't want to have to deal with any of this. His emotionally and physically drained already, and the sorting a feast is only going to take more out of him. Still, he keeps those feeling in and nods in agreement. Marius nods at the hat then and it stops singing.
Nick is glad that most of the students seem pretty distracted as he slips into his seat, slumping a bit more than his probably appropriate as he breaths out a sigh. He tunes out the dialogue with the hat and also the headmasters undoubtedly well prepared speech. To be honest he just doesn't care. Four great houses, blah blah blah. Four stupid houses more like. Oh and look, the house symbols appearing in the stars. How overly flamboyant. Why does everyone always have to speak about the houses as though they are some great tradition? Nick hates them with a burning passion.
Names are now being called by Professor Longbottom. Good luck to you, Nick thinks. Good luck to all you poor little eleven-year-olds getting sorted into cliches. Good luck to those of you stuck with people who don't understand you. Good luck trying to keep an open mind when everyone around you thinks the same way. Good luck trying to live up to the few standards you are told you have to uphold while you neglect the others. I wish you all good luck because I can promise you you're going to need it.

Laura
Laura had noticed when a few students entered late. Oliver’s nose was bloody; she’d been about to go down and make sure he was okay, when Sydney went over to talk to him. When he didn’t accept her offer of help, Laura decided she could make sure he was alright after the ceremony. Besides, it was blood on his nose; most likely magic hadn’t been involved, and he could wait until after the sorting to be treated. Him refusing Sydney’s help just confirmed her suspicions.
Then, the hat stopped singing, and Nicholas slumped into his seat beside her. He was obviously in a terrible mood, and she wondered if it had something to do with the scent of orange blossoms hovering around him. “What happened?” she asked, a teasing smile on her face. “If it’s because of the orange smell, it’s a good smell for you.”

Kaeden
Suddenly the obnoxious noise coming from the retched pile of leather shut up. Kaeden let out a sigh. Could she leave now? Wasn't this torture enough?
Marius came out from a side room and with a raise of his hand, the candles above the hall dimmed slightly. Stars appeared above them, and Kaeden considered flipping off the sky.
"I am grateful that once again I greet you and marvel as your attendance rivals the display you can see before you." Yeah right. "For those of you joining us for the first time, Welcome!" Well screw you! "You are about to take part in a time honored ceremony that will see each one of you joining one of four great houses. They will be your family," Family does not exist! "...and will nurture the wonderful virtues and talents that make you who you are, and what you will become in your time here. Each one of us that stand before you now who have come before you, dedicate ourselves to you." Y'all don't care about us. No! All of you only want to use us! You only want us to make you look good. The second we mess us, you'll have us erased.
Suddenly four symbols appeared in the stars. "Know that by those beacons you will reach your goals, so take heart and have no fears. And of course... enjoy the feast!" Marius took a step back, and Professor Longbottom stepped forward in his place.
The professor called out someone's name, and the girl at the front of the line Kaeden was in moved foward. Professor Longbottom had her sit on the stool and placed the hat on her head. NO! THAT THING IS NOT TOUCHING ME! The line moved forward, but Kaeden took a step back.

“What happened?” And just like that he's jolted out of his thoughts. He turns his head sideways to see Laura regarding him with a smile. “If it’s because of the orange smell, it’s a good smell for you.” Orange smell! Of course he'd forgotten about that. He sighs in frustration, slumping even more in his seat and not really caring that he's probably setting a bad example for the students. Isn't there a limit for the number of bad things that can happen to a person in one day? Because if not, there should be.

Tharin
He tried to ignore Arizona and tried to think of her as Miss Carson, but both were very hard to do. He looked back at her, and didn't know how to respond when he saw her give an American rude gesture to someone he couldn't see. He supposed he should just expect that behavior from her. She didn't seem to have many manners to speak of.
Suddenly the sorting hat stopped singing, and Professor McCormick entered the Great Hall with Headmaster Ogden. Oh Professor! You weren't supposed to actualy find him. You were supposed to go and relax. Oh well.
Headmaster Ogden said his speech and the sorting ceremony began. Professor McCormick slouched over the professor's table. Poor professor..
Tharin looked back at Arizona, there was a look of fear smeared across her face. She took a step back after the first child was placed under the sorting hat. She's gonna run. Tharin slowly stood and moved towards the exit to block it.

Laura
He really must be having a bad day, she realized as he just sunk deeper into his chair. “You know there’s a spell to make that smell go away, right?” She sighed, shaking her head slightly. She seemed to be one of the few people who actually remembered the spell. “Here.” All it took was a simple wave of her wand, and the scent disappeared. “But, I am curious, how did that happen?” She was no longer teasing him, she was just concerned. Nicholas must be having an absolutely rotten day. Perhaps talking to her about it could help.

Nick
“You know there’s a spell to make that smell go away, right?” Yes, of course there is. Of course there is some small, probably ridiculously easy spell that could help him out a bit. And of course he doesn't know it. “Here.” And then she's waving her wand and the smell completely disappears. He looks over at her, sitting a bit straighter now. She's helping him. He should probably care that this could be disrupting the stupidest ceremony ever created but he finds he can't really bring himself to. Someone has finally stepped in and started helping him and he really can't care about anything else. “But, I am curious, how did that happen?”
"Peeves," he relates with a sigh. "I'm lucky I managed to avoid getting hit by a stink bomb actually." The teacher on his other side gives him a reproachful look, obviously annoyed that he's talking turning the sorting ceremony. Nick ignores him. After everything that's happened he just can't bring himself to care. Besides, Laura is showing some actual concern about him and that feels good. He wants to bask in this kindness because who knows when someone is going to bestow more on the grumpy old muggle?

Laura
"Peeves," Ah, that made since, Peeves enjoyed tormenting teachers. Well, he enjoyed tormenting everyone. But why would he want Nicholas to smell like oranges? "I'm lucky I managed to avoid getting hit by a stink bomb actually." Ah, so Nicholas had been trying to change the smell to something more pleasant; thus the orange blossom smell. “Well, good job deflecting him,” she praised. You really did have to think quickly to outsmart the poltergeist.
But then, suddenly, she noticed the sorting had started, and Laura knew they had to set a good example for the students. “Do you want to tell me more later Nicholas? As much as I want to talk to you, I think the Headmaster might have to reprimand us if we don’t pay attention.” She really did want to help him with his problems; but that would simply have to wait for later. When they could talk in private without other teachers glaring at them.

“Well, good job deflecting him,” she tells him. He's a bit startled by the compliment and he can't help but smile slightly. He had done a good job with that, hadn't he? Maybe today wasn't completely dreadful. “Do you want to tell me more later Nicholas? As much as I want to talk to you, I think the Headmaster might have to reprimand us if we don’t pay attention.” Yes, she's right. The last thing he needs today is to get in trouble. He supposes he can sit through the torturous tradition without distracting himself with small talk. He has more than enough things he can contemplate in his own mind after all. He gives Laura a nod of consent, not wanting to speak unnecessarily if they are going to stop for now.
He then turns his attention back to the sorting, about to go on another mental rant. But that girl takes a step back, whether because she's scared or stubborn he just can't tell. And then Tharin moves to block the exit. He has to admire the enthusiasm but really, the lad is going to get himself hurt one of these days. Or hurt others. He pushes that thought out before it has room to grow, instead letting his hand move down and close on his wand. He's going to be ready to help if something happens.
