"Speaking of The Mummy, I just realized you have a passing resemblance to Rachel Weisz at certain angles."
Gwen laughed and waved a dismissive hand. "Oh, that's very sweet of you, but I don't think so," she scoffed. "You sure you're not feeling delirious? Hallucinatory? At any rate, we'd better not read aloud from that book. The last thing we need is a vengeful Egyptian priest coming back from the dead."
She pursed her lips in thought. "It does add to this island's mysteries, though. I'm pretty sure the Egyptian empire never reached as far as the Pacific," she said. "Nor any other ancient empire that would have used that type of writing. How did whoever wrote that, get here?"

"It was an accident, Kate," Jack remarked in defense as his walls went up. He was taken back slightly by the tone that Kate had slipped into. What happened the other day, what they did to Sawyer had been a complete misunderstanding. Jack just wished that Kate could see his level-headed way of thinking instead of allowing emotions to run the conversation. Besides, Sayid seemed like a well grounded individual, so Jack was confident that he knew better than to let a mistake distort his sense of identity. Otherwise, he wouldn't have offered to do what he did in the first place.

"Oh, that's very sweet of you, but I don't think so," "You sure you're not feeling delirious? Hallucinatory? At any rate, we'd better not read aloud from that book. The last thing we need is a vengeful Egyptian priest coming back from the dead."
I busted out laughing, both out of amusement and a sort of glee for sharing a geek moment. "Oh man," I began, catching my breathe. "We'll be just fine," I said with a dismissive wave. "Saw the movies so many times, I know exactly how to handle curses and people coming back from the dead." I looked down at the book again with even more interest now that it had a whole The Mummy feel to it, minus the curses and people coming back from the dead. "Too bad Evie's not here to help translate it."
"It does add to this island's mysteries, though. I'm pretty sure the Egyptian empire never reached as far as the Pacific," "Nor any other ancient empire that would have used that type of writing.
I eyed her with curious amusement. She certainly seemed to know a lot about this stuff. Or maybe it just seemed like it to me because history and geography weren't ever my strong suit.
How did whoever wrote that, get here?"
"Based off the info you just casually dropped, I get the feeling you might be better at answering that than me, Miss Carnahan." I chuckled then shrugged, giving my best guess. "Well, maybe I watch too many movies, but a smuggler's hold gives me a very old-timey, piratey feel. Who knows, maybe this island was visited more frequently back in the day when exploring and seafaring was the big thing. Too bad it's gone out of style," I said, smiling sadly as that fact worked against a quicker discovery.

"It was an accident, Kate,"
Kate had been there. She'd heard the scuffle and had run back in time to see the moments leading up to what Jack was referring to as an accident. Sawyer and Sayid had been fighting. Sayid had gone to a dark place and when he'd gained the upper hand, the knife hadn't slipped from his fingers and fallen into Sawyer's arm. No, Sayid had plunged that knife into Sawyer's arm.
So many things were bothering her about all this. Sayid's face, tortured and full of regret kept replaying in her mind. Jack not seeming to care how things had played out, which was so against that nature of his that she was drawn to. Worrying over Sawyer, caring too much when he'd said and done plenty enough to her to warrant no care at all. How much the last two really occupied her thoughts despite how much she tried to occupy her thoughts elsewhere. Even these past moments, having stood here, putting her thoughts on Sayid and his wellbeing, those last two continued to sneak in and plague her thoughts.
Kate's crossed arms tightened. She brought her gaze back to Jack. "Well, accidents happen when you torture people, Jack." Her tone was calm, yet with a little bite at the end. Being trapped here without the ability to run was forcing her to face things and she was not liking it. She was finding it more difficult at times to avoid taking it out on one of the two who brought her the most frustration.

"True, it would help to be in an active shipping lane," Gwen agreed, looking at the same serene horizon they'd been looking at for days. No boats, no planes, not even any fading white jet trails across the blue sky. It was hard to believe there was somewhere in this day and age that was completely off the map and uncharted.
"I never was a fan of boats, though," she confided. "Give me a plane any day. But even in all my travels, I never made it to Egypt. What about you? Have you done much traveling?"

"Well, accidents happen when you torture people, Jack."
"Sayid's a trained soldier, Kate. He can take care of himself," Jack replied, beside himself as he gazed at Kate with disbelief of what she was saying. Sayid had been in similar scenarios tens of times before, Jack was confident that this had just simply been another walk in the park for their soldier passenger. It was definitely a situation that neither one of them had ever been in, let alone trained for so it would be impossible for either Jack or Kate to understand Sayid's mind and thought process on that kind of level. Yet, Jack knew Sayid was smart enough to not put himself into a compromising position, "Did anything else happen out there, Kate? I understand you guys came back empty handed, but we'll keep trying. We have to," Jack inquired with care as Kate had seemed very emotionally riled since the groups return from the jungle trek. A sense of hope was offered, but Jack knew that they were already thirteen days in and still no sign of rescue. If someone was coming for them, they would have been here by now.

"I never was a fan of boats, though," she confided. "Give me a plane any day. But even in all my travels, I never made it to Egypt. What about you? Have you done much traveling?"
"Not really," I said deflatedly. "Pretty sure I can count the number of places I've been to on one hand." I started to mentally tick off my fingers. "Oh, hey! This place puts me into the second hand," I said playfully despite the fact it was a shitty truth. "Australia is the first place I've been to outside the U.S. I mean, I've been to Mexico a couple time but that was via a cruise stop and you didn't even need a passport back then. I've always been fascinated with ancient Egypt so the pyramids and tombs are definitely things I'd love to see one day. And visiting all the Disney parks in the world. That's pretty much my bucket list."
I shrugged. "I'm not exactly adventurous or worldly. I mean, it'd be neat to see other places, but I don't need to be there for long. You know, when I got out of high school, I actually looked into becoming a flight attendant as a possible career choice. Stop at all kinds of places, check it out a little, hop back on a plane and head back home. Plus I've always loved flying." I slightly cringed, realizing that I might not be so fond of flying after this. "Unfortunately, one of the requirements is for you to be based out of one of the main hubs and none of them seemed to be in SoCal. Everything and everyone I know and love is in SoCal and I cannot move away from Disneyland!" I said, jokingly making my tone very serious, yet I seriously couldn't picture myself not being close enough to drop in whenever we felt like it.
"You must've seen lots of places!" I said, waiting with curiosity and interest to hear about her travels.

"Some random journal Linda and I found in that smuggler's hold we fell into. I think it's really old. Like, seriously old. Not just the condition, I mean, look at this. When's the last time someone would have used hieroglyphics just for writing in a journal?" Jasmine had no idea where to begin, she just shrugged her shoulders and gave Heidi a small smile.
"Morning, ladies, I'm on medical detail today. How's your leg?"
"Hey," Jasmine was glad Gwen came back in one piece, worried about her being in the jungle. Yet, her mind was no focused on the conversation at hand. She was currently being stared at by the jungle's edge, Jordan was back and it was shaking her right to the core. Yet, she didn't want either of them to know. Instead, she just excused herself and wandered towards the shade where Jordan was. She wouldn't follow him in, not this time and he seemed to know that.
"Jazzy," It wasn't him, she knew it wasn't him. She saw his body-
"You're not him, you're in my mind."
"Go home, Jazzy, go home."
"We're trying, Jord, we're trying."

"Sayid's a trained soldier, Kate. He can take care of himself,"
Jack was right. She needed to stop lashing out at him because she was becoming uncomfortably aware of the fact that it was becoming less and less about Sayid and what had happened in the jungle. If she continued on like this, he might also work out that there was more to it and that would open up a whole other world of complications.
He was studying her now. It seemed he was picking up on the fact there was more to her lashing out. Kate loosely crossed her arms and looked down, hiding her face and anything he might see in her eyes, pretending to watch the waves lapping up near their feet. She was panicking for a subject change but said panic was scrambling her brain and making it hard to come up with one.
"Did anything else happen out there, Kate?
He assumed it had to do with her trek to the cockpit. Relief flooded through her and as he continued, she schooled her features and casually looked back up at him as if nothing bothered her.
I understand you guys came back empty handed, but we'll keep trying. We have to,"
"Spencer found the thing he was looking for, but it's not looking hopeful." She gave a casual shrug as they'd not put much hope into it in the first place. "No uninvited guest crashing the party this time," she said, trying to bring some lightness into the heavy subject. Despite there having been no terrifying creature, it had still been an extremely unpleasant trip. "We buried the bodies," she began, trying to sound detached and clinical about it, but saying it out loud with Jack watching her so intently bubbled up some of the emotional toll it had taken. Kate looked out toward the ocean again, pretending to watch the waves, finding it easier to hold onto detachment when directing her face toward something that couldn't see or react to what she was saying or feeling. The rest of it came out much easier this way, her voice maintaining a steady and calm tone. "The pilot, too. Had to cut down the tree to get to him."

"...Everything and everyone I know and love is in SoCal and I cannot move away from Disneyland! You must've seen lots of places!"
"Well, I can see not wanting to move far from home," Gwen said with a sympathetic smile. "Me, I put an ocean between myself and my family, and I think we're all far better for it." Falling back on sarcasm, not wanting to burden Heidi with stories of alienation and regret. Sure, a lot of things were said at that wedding in Sydney, but she was sure she would see her family again.
"It's not all glitz and glamour at Oceanic, though," she explained. "I started out at the bottom -- commuter flights to exotic locations like Oakland and Bakersfield. Eventually I moved up the coast to Vancouver and Anchorage. It took a while before I made the trans-Pacific route, but it's been great. Right up until now, obviously.
"England will always be home, in a way, but I've been in the States since university. However, I did spend one summer in Spain, drinking far too much Sangria and getting involved with a ridiculously handsome man who was absolutely terrible for me," she confided, cringing in embarrassment. "Thankfully, my friend Nicholas showed up and kept me from making a really stupid mistake. I'm sure you've never done anything like that....?"

"Spencer found the thing he was looking for, but it's not looking hopeful." "No uninvited guest crashing the party this time,"
The talk of unsuccessful missions was nothing out of the ordinary for Jack, and his question to Kate was merely not for himself. He wanted to give her an opportunity to let out what she had been bottling inside. He could tell she was struggling, and knew that after what they had been through up to this point that she would seek minimal expectations in rescue missions as well. Hope was lacking, but they still had to keep trying anything and everything. Even if it resulted in nothing. But he had a feeling there had been more to the story than what had been led on. And there was.
"We buried the bodies," "The pilot, too. Had to cut down the tree to get to him."
Jack's eyes flickered up at Kate as she projected her emotions into the never ending landscape of blue sky and crashing waves, turning away from him. Remaining silent for moments, his heart grew heavy as he kept his softened gaze on her. He could tell that she was trying to contain whatever emotions that were rising within her before returning her gaze back to his. In that moment, Jack felt regretful. They had been through a hell of a lot since they crash landed, but she should have never have had to go through something like that without him. Raising his hand up to rub the stubble on his chin, Jack was the one this time who tore his gaze away to stare off into the morning sun to conceal his reaction. He was angry at himself for staying. He should have gone with them. He should have been there for her.
Finally, the intensity began to bubble downward as Jack finally spoke, "At least they're at rest now, thanks to you," Jack nodded as he glanced at Kate with a side grin of gratitude before peering over his shoulder at his newly hired nurse talking with Heidi, "I should probably go rescue my nurse, Heidi will keep Gwen chatting all day if I don't," Jack tried to throw a bit of light to the tense conversation they had just shared, "Kate," Jack began to head up the beach, but turned back around to Kate once more as he spoke her name inquisitively, "...I'm glad you're back." A warm smile spread across his face to Kate before finally tearing himself away and back up to Gwen.

"At least they're at rest now, thanks to you,"
So much warmth and compassion always radiated from him, especially in moments like these, when she really needed it. It was a rare quality to find in a man. Kate grinned her appreciation, though it was more for the pick-me-up rather than the compliment. Her eyes wandered to just beyond Jack's shoulder where the flight attendant and Heidi were absorbed in a conversation, finding one of those rare moments of distraction from reality. Kate nodded toward Gwen. "And Gwen and Gabe and Spencer," she added modestly. There was no way she could have done it herself. The physical part of it would have taken a good day or two on her own but the emotional aspect of it wasn't something most people, including herself, would have been able to handle on their own.
"I should probably go rescue my nurse, Heidi will keep Gwen chatting all day if I don't,"
Kate watched Jack turn toward the two, grinning at the truth in his comment. Quiet and withdrawn at first, but once she got comfortable around you, Heidi could talk your ear off. "Regular knight in sandy jeans," she teased as he started to walk away.
"Kate,"
Still grinning, Kate had looked out at the water, but turned back with an inquisitive look when Jack called her name.
"...I'm glad you're back."
The warmth in his smile spread a warmth throughout herself. She looked out at the water again and it took her a moment to feel the moony look that had overtaken her expression. She wiped the goofy grin off her face and headed away from the shore to find something distracting to do.

"Well, I can see not wanting to move far from home," "Me, I put an ocean between myself and my family, and I think we're all far better for it."
There was sympathy in my smile. I knew she was making light of it, but it was a sad fact that she and her family didn't get along. I wondered what kind of awful people they were to not get along with Gwen. She was always a caring and funny person whenever I'd been around her.
"It's not all glitz and glamour at Oceanic, though," "I started out at the bottom -- commuter flights to exotic locations like Oakland and Bakersfield. Eventually I moved up the coast to Vancouver and Anchorage. It took a while before I made the trans-Pacific route, but it's been great. Right up until now, obviously.
"Ugh," I agreed with an exaggerated eyeroll at the surroundings of our unintended layover.
"England will always be home, in a way, but I've been in the States since university. However, I did spend one summer in Spain, drinking far too much Sangria and getting involved with a ridiculously handsome man who was absolutely terrible for me," "Thankfully, my friend Nicholas showed up and kept me from making a really stupid mistake. I'm sure you've never done anything like that....?"
"Psh, no. I'm way too afraid of getting my heart broken," I said with a dismissive wave. Going down the route of my issues in that regard was boring and a downer, especially when juicy information was just hinted at. It was the friend who'd come to her rescue that grabbed my attention rather than the ridiculously handsome man. "But whoooo is this Nicholas?" I asked in a sing-song tone, leaning in and playing up the teenage girls gossiping about boys vibe.
Motion coming toward us grabbed my attention and I looked over to see Jack approaching. "Damn. Raincheck on that," I said quietly. Jack was closer now so I added in a stage whisper, "Shh, your boss is coming. Hurry, say something clinic-y."

I'd spent the last hour working on the sandcastle with Sarah but had to bow out. The sun was getting to me. And so I'd gone to grab the journal and settled in what had become my spot; the shade of the tree near the shore's edge, close to where Sarah kept on building with the crazy energy of a little kid.
My attention went between Sarah and the journal resting against my raised legs, doing my best to touch the old, delicate pages as little as possible.
The current page that caught my fascination was a sketch. I knew it was an Egyptian god because it held an ankh in each hand, but I didn't recognize which. I couldn't recall ever seeing one that had the head of a hippo so I was stuck wondering if it'd been an actual god or if the journal's owner was dabbling with his or her creativity to make up their own. Not being able to consult the internet was getting more and more annoying with each day.

Jasmine had spent the rest of the morning in her shelter; she had to be alone. Jordan followed her everywhere she went, but her shelter was a safe place. Just to be able to hide there and not hear his voice, see his face. Guilt, it was all she felt. She stared down at her engagement ring, the very last thing she had of him. Along with the letter that was in his pocket, the one she couldn't stop reading.
On edge, she left her shelter and found a place far from the jungle's edge. Keeping her gaze to the waves and refusing to look back, knowing Jordan would be there. She felt like she was going insane; this had to be what going insane felt like?
Plopping down in the sand, she pressed her forehead against her knees and twirled the ring on her finger. Two weeks, one day, so many hours- Jordan had been taken from her, and she was grieving. These people were her friends, but they weren't her family-
"I miss you." She whispered.

Not wanting to make a spectacle of his re-entrance into the survivor's society, Bennett had spent the last hour lurking among the shadows of the shoreline. He was aware that a few people had taken note that he was around, yet he spent some time usually hanging out in the background of all the noise so he wondered if anyone had actually noticed his absence. According to Ethan, no one had questioned him about where Bennett might be so that made him feel rather relieved. After the emotional roller-coaster he had been through within the last twenty-four hours, he was weary of conversation. But he knew that he had to get to work and do what he was told, starting with narrowing in on those on the list. Approaching a tree trunk, he placed a hand on the side of it as he scanned the beach for any of the prospects. His eyes caught Heidi sitting quietly by herself, reading what appeared to be a journal of sorts. She was fairly cheery to talk with and was never problematic, Bennett figured she was a good person to start with to ease his way back into conversing with everyone as normal. He pressed his body away from the tree trunk as he began to nonchalantly make his way across the sand.
"Did you draw that?" Bennett stood behind Heidi from a social distance as he peered down over her shoulder at the Egyptian-esque drawing on the page she had been staring at, "It's really good." Bennett's interest was sparked, though one wouldn't really be able to tell behind his deep monotone that he couldn't quite help when he spoke.

Sarah was doing her best to keep herself preoccupied with her sandcastle. There was nothing else she could do with it besides patch it up from where cracks started to form. It wasn't perfect, and for once that didn't bother her, she usually would fuss over everything, but today she just didn't care. Sandcastles were not forever, they crumbled, they got knocked over- and without her dad here, it seemed pointless.
Sighing, Sarah decided it was time to move on to other things. She wasn't sure what, but days of sandcastles were coming to an end, but her time on this island had just begun. She wasn't sure if rescue would ever happen, but it had been thirteen days and no sign of a rescue. They would have to make their rescue and somehow save themselves.
In just a couple of days, she would be turning nine. She remembered because she had plans to celebrate with her grammy. Now, no one even knew she had a birthday coming. Did she tell someone? Would it matter? Not like they could make presents or cake appear, it all seemed rather pointless.
Another sigh, she grabbed Mr. Floppers and walked over to Heidi and Ben, plopping down. "This place is stupid."

Rose Nadler - tempplay by Kristi Lynne - Rose approached the young blonde girl who was sitting alone on the beach. Someone had told her she was some sort of famous singer, but Rose didn't recognize her. She seemed without the entourage that most celebrities keep. "Y'know, young lady, this is usually my spot for quietly contemplating," she spoke up. "But you seem to need it more right now. You feel like talking to someone?"

"Y'know, young lady, this is usually my spot for quietly contemplating," Jasmine didn't hear her coming, so she jumped a little at the sound of her voice. "But you seem to need it more right now. You feel like talking to someone?" Jasmine took a breath and wiped away the tears from her cheeks and scooted a little. She had seen this woman sitting alone before, hearing that her husband was still missing. Everyone had presumed him dead but Rose felt otherwise.
"I would love some company if you don't mind sharing your spot?" Jasmine wasn't sure if she would be able to tell her about Jordan. How she could see him, that he was haunting her- it was strange and most would think she snapped.

"Did you draw that?" "It's really good."
Concentration fully on the journal, I hadn't heard anyone approaching and so I jumped slightly at the sound of Bennett's deep voice suddenly being there. "Holy crap, Ninja," I said with a hand to my racing heart, laughing off my embarrassment as I glanced up at him, offering a friendly smile so he wouldn't feel the need to apologize when he'd done nothing wrong. It was my own fault for getting oblivious to my surroundings. "No," I finally answered as his question belatedly hit my brain. "Only thing I can draw is Marvin Martian and Mickey Mouse but that was after tons of practice."
I shifted to more comfortably see up to his tall frame. "Have a seat if you'd like," I offered with a wave at the sand beside me. "I feel like I haven't seen you in forever. Everything okay?" There were no traces of suspicion in my tone, only genuine concern. I was always a bit oblivious to my surroundings so in my mind, he'd simply been hanging out at the caves or keeping to himself because something was bothering him.
"This place is stupid."
Before I could get an answer, Sarah had plopped down on my other side. Avoiding a topic in front of Sarah that potentially held mental and emotional tolls, I let my question to Bennett go in hopes I could revisit it in a rare moment Sarah wasn't attached to my hip. "It really is. Not one rollercoaster in sight," I joked, trying to lighten Sarah's bad mood.
I crossed my legs so that the journal laid flat and at a better angle for both of them to see and attempted to distract us all for awhile in it. "So Bennett, do you recognize this god?" The way he'd proclaimed that it was good gave me the impression it was an actual representation of something and not a random made-up thing.

"As someone who has rubbed elbows with Hollywood, very few are very interesting once you get to know them. We are just normal folks who have money," Jasmine took a breath, "I lost myself in the fame and I forgot who I was. Jinx took over my life and I have to make sure I remember that little girl who dreamed of being a pop star. The one who sang in the mirror with her hairbrush," Jasmine was grateful to have someone to talk to.

Rose Nadler - tempplay by Kristi Lynne - "...Jinx took over my life and I have to make sure I remember that little girl who dreamed of being a pop star. The one who sang in the mirror with her hairbrush."Rose nodded in understanding. "Our childhood dreams do take a turn, don't they? I thought I was gonna' marry a prince, but he turned out to be a dentist. It worked out, though," she confided with a smile. "And here you have a captive audience if you decide to start doing concerts again. Were you traveling with all your people -- band, dancers, hair and makeup?"

Jasmine smiled just a little before shaking her head.
"The tour ended a month ago, I stayed in Australia a little longer. I was heading home to take a little break and be around my family." Jasmine trailed off as she stared back into the ocean, "my boyfriend-" She twirled the ring on her finger as she spoke, "he told me he wouldn't be able to make it, I got mad at him and we fought. Turns out he had these big plans to propose, booked a seat in another section of the plane. He, he didn't make it."

"Even if you two fought, I'm sure he knew that you cared about him, and you can look back on the times you had together, good and bad. At least you got people around here looking out for you, and you have something of his to hold onto. Same with me," she said, holding out the gold wedding band that hung from her necklace, partly to remind herself of its importance.

The people on this island had been nothing but kind, even if she had been a slight horror on the plane. She was sure Gwen hated her when they first arrived but they were friends now and that was something she cherished. She had made some great friends here...
"His name is Bernard, right? I heard some of the others mention him." People were certain that he was gone, lost but Rose believed he was still out there, she held out hope. "How long have you two been married?"

How long have you two been married?""Bernard and I are newlyweds, if you can believe it," she replied with a chuckle, well aware that the term seemed more appropriate for people Jasmine's age. "We went out for coffee one night after he helped me get my car unstuck in the snow. Five months later, he proposed. This trip to Australia was our honeymoon. Didn't quite go as planned." Rose grew quiet as she considered the visit to the faith healer that Bernard had insisted on, how he had told her that he had no cure for her terminal cancer, and how she had then lied to Bernard about it so that the two of them could enjoy the time they had left. "My husband was in the tail section," Rose said. "And I know that people think I'm silly, or delusional, to think he's still alive. But I choose to call it faith. He wouldn't give up on me."

"I feel like I haven't seen you in forever. Everything okay?"
"Me? Oh, um, yeah-yeah things have been okay," Bennett stammered as if he was caught off guard slightly, before accepting Heidi's invitation to sit down. He sank his bottom down to the ground as he sat cross legged beside Heidi, placing his hands on his knees, "Just a bit occupied, is all." Before Heidi could ask for any specifics, young Sarah came along and allowed the attention to drift slightly from Bennett for a moment.
"This place is stupid."
"It really is. Not one rollercoaster in sight,"
Bennett was enlightened with relief as Heidi's attention drifted to the pouty young girl as she attempted to sympathize with her negative feelings toward their current situation. Remaining silent, Bennett discreetly paid attention to their interaction as he realized that little Sarah attached herself to Heidi often, like a sister or protector. Bennett knew it would be rather difficult to find a way to distant the two, and him and Ethan would have to act fairly soon. For the present time, he would continue to study Sarah's every move and turn until the right time came.
"So Bennett, do you recognize this god?"
Suddenly, the attention was back on Bennett as his questioning gaze pointed downward at the journal page that Heidi was pointing towards, "Hmm, I was never much of a history buff to tell ya the truth," Bennett shrugged as he looked back up at Heidi. He played dumb, as the statue that was sketched was all to familiar to him. Although the majority of the statue was no more, it was a part of the island's culture and history - yet she didn't need to know that he knew that of course, "Arzt is a teacher of sorts, isn't he? Perhaps he would know?" Bennett offered suggestively as his complexion grew just as confused as Heidi's.

This trip to Australia was our honeymoon. Didn't quite go as planned." Just five months, the way Rose talked about him she would have guessed thirty or more. "My husband was in the tail section and I know that people think I'm silly, or delusional, to think he's still alive. But I choose to call it faith. He wouldn't give up on me."
"You shouldn't give up, nothing wrong with having a little faith. We have no idea who else survived, the plane landed in so many directions. I'd like to imagine he'll come out of the jungle someday, back to you." Jasmine hoped Rose was right because she couldn't imagine seeing the despair on this kind woman's face.
