Kate busied herself, sitting in the sand by the food, using vines to tie together rows of thick bamboo, a project Michael had started before leaving for the caves and Kate had insisted helping with. Michael's experience with architecture coupled with her experience of various ship knots made for a great collaboration. Michael had already done the measuring and the bamboo had already been collected so she was capable of continuing it on her own.
The task along with a little small talk when people stopped by to grab some food and curiously inquire what she was working on helped to distract her. She found her worried gaze wandering less toward the general direction of Jack, Sawyer, and Sayid. A lull between fellow survivors had her thinking about them again and her features took on a serious look.
Tying one last knot on the current vine, Kate used one of Locke's knives to cut off the excess. She gave the two bamboo she'd just tied together a tug and was satisfied that they didn't budge from their place. Kate heard approaching footfall in the sand and paused her task to look up, smiling at Rose and Sarah.
"Morning," she said to Rose then leaned back on her hands and gave her attention to Sarah, her smile brightening. Kate liked kids but it'd been a rare opportunity to be near any given her lifestyle before the island. "Hey there, Sarah. You hungry? I could cut up some fruit for you," she offered.

"I understand, I'm fine, I promise."
"Only if you're sure you're alright," Gwen insisted. Jasmine seemed to be doing better, but she was a performer after all. She watched her walk away before uttering a sad sigh. "Poor girl. Her fiance was on the plane, he didn't make it," she informed Seb. "She saw something this morning that reminded her of him and was understandably upset." She figured she would leave out the part where the 'something' Jasmine thought she saw was Jordan's ghost. Seb might be an empathetic and understanding counselor, but that might be stretching the limits of his empathy.
"Not that I'm volunteering you to speak to her," Gwen added hastily, remembering her prior promise. "I should think we're both allowed a day off after yesterday's successful water retrieval - slash - rescue mission. Aren't you so glad that I volunteered you?"

Seb grinned to himself at Gwen's sudden attempt at clarification. "Well, I'd hate for my time here to start getting boring. At least now I know that being by your side is never going to get dull" he replied, shooting her an amused smile. "I don't mind talking to Jasmine about what she's going through as long as she wants to talk. I learned my lesson when it comes to people who don't want to open up yesterday" he chuckled. "But what about you? Just because you were part of the airline staff doesn't mean you have to put on a brave face with me, you know."

"Well, I'd hate for my time here to start getting boring. At least now I know that being by your side is never going to get dull."
Gwen laughed and shook her head. "Are you quite sure you wouldn't prefer dull?" she countered, continuing to make her way to the island buffet. Not that she didn't enjoy having Seb by her side. Quite the contrary. It was terribly easy to talk to and to trust him, which meant she'd surely screw it up in a short time. And if that happened, she might as well move to that hole that Heidi and Linda had found.
She said a quick hello to Rose, Sarah, and Kate, before grabbing a bottle of water and a banana. She took a seat under one of the shaded trees and leaned against it, waiting for Seb to join her.
"...But what about you? Just because you were part of the airline staff doesn't mean you have to put on a brave face with me, you know."
"Well, it's not just with you," she protested weakly, fumbling with the banana peel. "I don't know, perhaps I'm trying to toe the company line, keep calm and carry on, all that. But if anyone is looking to me for answers, I'm afraid I don't have them. I wish I did."
Gwen took a few bites of banana while looking at the waves in silence. Thinking perhaps she owed him some truth in exchange for his concern. "The funny thing is I wasn't even supposed to be on this flight," she finally said. "I switched schedules so that I could get back to LA a day earlier. I was in Sydney for my sister's wedding to this Australian wine baron. Horribly pretentious and exhausting affair. And I just...I'd had about all the family time I could take. So I left. And not exactly on the best of terms."

Every time someone would come over and grab a fruit, she felt her little hands clench. Didn't they know she was counting and organizing from small to big and big to small? Yet, Sarah didn't snap like she would have at home, she found herself calm and straight thinking. So instead of screaming and yelling she just grumbled and replaced it. "Grr, grr."
"Morning," Rose perked up and smiled.
"Good morning, I sugge-" But it was already too late, Kate was going into the layer of the beast.
"Hey there, Sarah. You hungry? I could cut up some fruit for you," She looked up from her sorting and gave Kate a small smile.
"Nope, sorting."

"Are you quite sure you wouldn't prefer dull?"
"Time goes so slowly when things are dull" he chuckled. "Having you get me into all kinds of trouble is much better. Besides, I like a bit of variety."
"Well, it's not just with you...I don't know, perhaps I'm trying to toe the company line, keep calm and carry on, all that. But if anyone is looking to me for answers, I'm afraid I don't have them. And not exactly on the best of terms."
Seb grabbed some food and sat down beside Gwen, listening quietly as she spoke. "It sounds like you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself, wishing you had the answers and worrying that other people might think you have them. You might have been part of the airline staff but that doesn't mean you have to keep meeting people's needs now, Gwen. I think most people here know that you're as in the dark about what's going on as they are."
He took a mouthful of water before adding, "Sounds like you were a guest at the wedding from Hell. How are you feeling about the way things ended with you and your family?"

"...You might have been part of the airline staff but that doesn't mean you have to keep meeting people's needs now, Gwen. I think most people here know that you're as in the dark about what's going on as they are."
She nodded in thoughtful silence. He might have only been saying it to make her feel better but he sounded sincere. "I know, I know. But maybe staying busy helps me keep the fear at bay," she said.
"Sounds like you were a guest at the wedding from Hell. How are you feeling about the way things ended with you and your family?"
"Ah, very not good," she answered. She studied his face while considering her words. She might have earlier confided in Jasmine and Heidi, but they had known each other for longer. A closeness that allowed acceptance. And for whatever reason, she didn't want Seb to think badly of her. There was more at stake in that closeness, whether she would admit it or not.
"I was angry with my sister, Helena, for going ahead with the wedding after our brother died. Car accident," Gwen began to explain. "She wasn't as close to Julian as I was, she was always closer with Mum. Poor Dad tried to keep the peace for the sake of appearances. But I didn't want to move on without him. It felt like a betrayal."

"Nope, sorting."
Kate could see the tension behind Sarah's smile. She was clearly upset by something. Confused, Kate looked at Rose and by Rose's calm, knowing expression, Kate was able to figure out what was going on.
Sarah was a smart little girl and behaved at a more mature level. Even now, she was trying to maintain a smile despite the fact that her painstaking sorting kept getting messed up. That was another thing about exceptionally smart children. Many times, it tended to come with quirks that could make an innocent act by someone else cause frustration and anger. And that was probably the extent of her knowledge with this type of situation so she attempted to back peddle and tread carefully.
"Ah, I see," Kate said with a kind smile. She was careful to replace the fruit she'd picked up to the exact spot it had been. Kate knelt down beside Sarah and faced the table, trying to discern what exactly Sarah was wanting to accomplish. "You know," she began patiently, "people are hungry and are going to keep coming by and taking the fruit. We might be able to persuade them to wait, but probably only for a little bit. Can I do anything to help you complete your task?"

***Jack enters from jungle outskirts ***
Jack stopped in the middle of the beach and peered around his surroundings. Jack put one of his hands up to his forehead as the bright morning sunlight reflected off the sand. The weather was growing hot, and Jack was growing weary of this same situation. Same shit with Sawyer, different day. Jack finally spotted Kate over by the food talking with little Sarah.
“Hey,” Jack walked up beside Kate, and smiled at the little girl, “Sarah, do you mind if I steal Kate for a moment?” Jack looked down at Sarah, but he could feel the tension filled glare from Kate burning a hole in his backside.

Sarah watched as Kate picked up some fruit when she offered to cut some for her. She quickly said no with a sweet smile, waiting for the fruit to return back in place. "Ah, I see," and back it went right where it had been. Sarah went back to sorting only to pause as Kate spoke up again."You know, people are hungry and are going to keep coming by and taking the fruit. We might be able to persuade them to wait, but probably only for a little bit. Can I do anything to help you complete your task?" Things needed to be counted...
"Hey," As Sarah thought about a task she could give Kate, Jack came up and interrupted. "Sarah, do you mind if I steal Kate for a moment?”
"I'm done," She just finished sorting and stood up. "Small to big, big to small." She grabbed a banana and started to peel it.

“Hey,”
Hearing Jack's voice, Kate turned toward it with a frown, just as her eyes began to narrow, he'd leaned down to talk to Sarah so she was left giving her look to his back.
“Sarah, do you mind if I steal Kate for a moment?”
Did Sarah mind? What about herself? She didn't approve of what was happening and she'd already made that clear to him.
"I'm done," "Small to big, big to small."
Kate's expression quickly turned back to a pleasant one when she looked back at the little girl. "Great job," she said sincerely. "I'll be collecting more fruit again soon I could definitely use your organizing skills again." Having the fruit sorted by size might not serve a purpose to others but it seemed to give the little girl a feeling of purpose, accomplishment, and comfort and that's all that mattered. "Thanks, Sarah."
The smile she gave Sarah faded as soon as she turned and without sparing Jack a glance, walked to an area of the beach out of earshot of anyone else. Finding a satisfactory spot, Kate turned and crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at him. Jack knew she'd already tried talking to Sawyer, despite his asking her not to. "If you think I'd be of any use, you're wasting your time. Besides, I don't want any part of what's going on in there." Kate gave a nod toward the jungle.

Seb nodded as he listened to her, his eyes fixed on her face with silent intensity. He got the sense there was more to Gwen's story but that was always the case when people first started talking about things that were troubling and personal. "It sounds like, in a sense, your world stopped after Julian's car accident" he said, automatically slipping into a calmer and quieter voice not unlike the one he used when speaking to patients. "But your sister's didn't...and that was hard for you to reconcile. You didn't want to put on appearances or pretend life was going on as normal. I think that's a pretty admirable quality, Gwen. Anyone can put on an act but it takes a certain amount of courage to be genuine."

"...I think that's a pretty admirable quality, Gwen. Anyone can put on an act but it takes a certain amount of courage to be genuine."
"Heh, not sure I'd use the word 'courage'," she scoffed. Because the world did stop that awful day, and how could she pretend that life would go on as normal. When they were separated by an ocean, the strained family dynamic was out of sight, out of mind. But once they were trapped in a Sydney hotel for a long weekend, having to smile for guests and for cameras, it was almost too much to bear. And she felt like a fraud when Seb tried to describe her as 'admirable.'
"I mean, I shouldn't resent her for wanting to get on with her life. That wouldn't be fair, either. I just..." she continued. "I hope I get the chance to set things right, you know?" But frankly, it was a little too much genuine-ness for today, and she didn't want to appear to be angling for free therapy. After all, it was Jasmine who was meant to be receiving grief counseling. So she decided to shift the spotlight in his direction as she carried on eating.
"What about you? Is family one of those 'things' that you were escaping back in England?" she inquired, harkening back to the conversation they'd had the day before.

Seb simply nodded as Gwen continued to speak. People rarely saw themselves the way others saw them. It was hard to remain impartial when looking at yourself. It was common for people to either undersell themselves or display an impressive amount of arrogance. Seb was glad Gwen was in the former category. People who thought they were more special than they were really irritated him.
"What about you? Is family one of those 'things' that you were escaping back in England?"
"One of many...but I've been avoiding my family for years so I like to think I've mastered it by now" he said with a humourless laugh. "I never got on with them, my mother in particular. She was never abusive, not in a physical sense, but if you believe that mental abuse is a real thing then she definitely fits neatly into that category. I don't personally believe that anyone should put up with toxic people just because they're related to them. It doesn't matter that they're family, if they're bad for your mental health you've got every right to cut them out of your life...so that's what I did."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Gwen replied in sympathy. Her own mother could be cruel in her way, and she didn't wish that on anyone. "But I did put an ocean between myself and my parents the first chance I got, so I certainly won't judge you. In fact, I welcome you to the Disappointed Mothers Club. We meet every third Tuesday," she added with a smile, assuming by now his strong sense of empathy would have picked up on her pattern of covering insecurities with humor. Along with the ability to repress unpleasant emotions that was their shared birthright as British citizens.
"I suppose we all have our demons," she remarked as she surveyed the other survivors nearby. "Unfortunately now we're stuck on this island with nothing to distract us from facing them. Dealing with the shock and grief is hard enough without worrying about basic survival. And being split up like we are now makes that even harder. Our doctor, our hunter, our fisherman -- they're all at the caves."
She gave him an imploring look as she finally gave voice to a concern that had been gnawing at her. "Do you think we made a mistake staying here? Would it be...I dunno, giving up to move inland?"

"I welcome you to the Disappointed Mothers Club. We meet every third Tuesday."
"Finally, a club I can comfortably belong to. If there's not already an effigy burning scheme in place then I've definitely got something for the suggestion box" Seb deadpanned.
"Do you think we made a mistake staying here? Would it be...I dunno, giving up to move inland?"
"I've been wondering about that myself" Seb replied, frowning to himself as he mulled it over. "On the one hand it makes sense to have people on the beach in case a ship or a plane comes past...and whatever's stomping around in the jungle doesn't seem to be coming near the beach yet...but on the other hand, being near running water and shade makes a lot of sense...and like you said, that's where our doctor is."
Seb chewed thoughtfully for a few moments before swallowing and looking at Gwen. "I don't think it would be giving up. I think as long as we keep doing what we can to make this situation bearable for ourselves and other people then we'll never be giving up. Making decisions...even if they turn out to be the wrong ones...that's not giving up. We'd only be giving up if we resigned ourselves to never getting off this island again. That's how I see it, anyway."

"...Making decisions...even if they turn out to be the wrong ones...that's not giving up. We'd only be giving up if we resigned ourselves to never getting off this island again. That's how I see it, anyway."
Gwen nodded in agreement. "True, we still have hope. The likelihood of being well and truly lost in the 21st century...it's hard to believe," she affirmed, even though the flight being so far off-course made it scarily easier to believe. "Though we do have some people who have made themselves quite at home here. Mr. Locke, Sawyer and his island enterprise, even Professor Arzt is thrilled about his growing bug collection," she observed, with a head tilt toward the jars of specimens that the science teacher was busily curating. She just hoped he kept them far away from the food supply, as there were some rather nasty-looking spiders that made her shudder.
It was the makeshift beginnings of a community, since they needed each other. But there were also friends nearby, ones that she didn't want to leave even for the relative safety of the caves. "So I suppose we stay here as long as resources allow," she finally said. After all, the book Heidi and Linda had found meant there was civilization at some point. Perhaps not highly advanced but one that had managed to make the island a home.
Gwen sighed at the thought of 'home.' How it seemed to feel further and further away. "But when we do get rescued, I know exactly what I'm going to do," she began dreamily. "Go to the nearest air-conditioned movie theater, watch some shallow rom-com with a large cherry Icee and a jumbo pack of Sno-Caps. What about you? I mean, once they've cleared all the adoring women with 'Welcome Home' signs from your doorstep?"

"If you think I'd be of any use, you're wasting your time. Besides, I don't want any part of what's going on in there."
Jack felt Kate's narrowed eyes judging this new side of him that unveiled itself today, and it made him squirm. Shit happened, and although he had a reevaluation of his own sense of character himself, he came to the conclusion that he wasn't a bad person. Just someone who made a mistake by allowing the pressure to get to his head. "I didn't want this either Kate," Jack said with slight frustration, "I didn't want any of it. But it happened that way, and we all went to far...Sawyer, Sayid. Me," Jack's gaze momentarily fell to the ocean beside them, angry with himself for allowing the situation to grow this immense. What's done, was done and Jack realized that. Now he had to fix things before it was too late.
"Sawyer...wants to talk to you. He says it's the only way. Now, you have a choice Kate," Jack proposed, hoping she would choose correctly, "You can come talk to him and help me make things right. Or, you can say no and I wouldn't blame you for it. But if you say no...I can't guarantee what's going to happen. To Sawyer, Shannon, me, everyone Kate," Was this what the beginning of total anarchy felt like? Jack was at a complete loss, and Jack wouldn't be surprised if Kate said no. And if she said yes, well, Jack would have a lot of making up to do for her trouble later on.

"I didn't want this either Kate," "I didn't want any of it. But it happened that way, and we all went to far...Sawyer, Sayid. Me," "Sawyer...wants to talk to you. He says it's the only way.
Kate's stony expression turned to surprise. It was Sawyer's idea to bring her into this? She'd assumed Jack's plan had backfired and that he was the one trying to involve her. No longer feeling on the offense, she slowly uncrossed her arms and heard Jack out.
Now, you have a choice Kate," "You can come talk to him and help me make things right. Or, you can say no and I wouldn't blame you for it. But if you say no...I can't guarantee what's going to happen. To Sawyer, Shannon, me, everyone Kate,"
"I'll talk to him," she quickly agreed without hesitation, then gestured for him to lead the way.
Kate silently followed, her mind trying to determine this sudden change. She'd tried talking to Sawyer earlier. Tried psychoanalyzing him to get him to talk and that had backfired into, by far, the worst confrontation she'd had with him. It had ended with Sawyer worked up to intense anger and loathing, both self and toward her for having drudged up that letter, that Kate had thought he'd avoid her from here on out. So why in the world was he asking for her?

Locke had been more than accommodating with the lending of his knives. He'd actually let me borrower a couple, including a protective leather sheath and some quick tips. I promised to have them back to him before the end of the day then set out to check up on Sarah and perhaps take her off of Rose's hands.
"Hey Sarah," I said cheerily when I came across them. "Alisha, Linda, and I are going to try spear fishing." Hearing myself say that out loud, I couldn't help chuckling. "Did you want to watch and laugh at us? Maybe hold the net in case we miraculously catch something?"

"Glad to help, no problem."
Sarah finished her banana before she helped Rose pick up a little. She didn't mind helping the nice lady with whatever she wanted. Hey Sarah," Sarah smiled big when Heidi neared, running to close the distance and giving her a hug. "Alisha, Linda, and I are going to try spear fishing. Did you want to watch and laugh at us? Maybe hold the net in case we miraculously catch something?" Sarah looked and Rose.
"Go for it, I'm fine here. Thank you for your help today," Rose smiled.
"You're welcome, bye bye." She took Heidi's hand, "Okay, let's go."

After the ordeal the previous day, I'd really needed a little alone time. I gave Rose an appreciative smile, feeling, and I guessed looking, better than I had that morning. "Thanks for keeping an eye on her, Rose."
"Anytime!" she said wholeheartedly.
We headed to the pile of items that had been collected for making shelters, and luckily there were a few sturdy branches and some vines left over. That meant I didn't have to face asking someone else to get those supplies which would most likely mean having to confess I was still terrified at the thought of going into the jungle.
"Perfect," I said, testing the feel and weight of one. "Think you could pick out some good vines while I chose the branches?"

"Think you could pick out some good vines while I chose the branches?" Sarah nodded her head and started to look at the vines, trying to find good ones. She found some vines and yanked to check the strength, nodding when she found some good vines- she hoped.
"What are the vines for?"

"Ah, that is a very smart question to ask. How do you know which vines are good if you don't know what they're for?" I praised, giving her nose an affectionate tap. "For tying," I began while testing the sturdiness and length of another branch. "We don't have any rope around so we're improvising." Deeming the branch worthy, I placed it separate and started to check another. "Linda is scouring the camp for something to use as a net but in case she doesn't find anything, we can tie the vines and make our own homemade net."
Placing another branch into the good pile, I paused to look at her. "I have absolutely no idea how to make a net. Or spearfish." I looked up in thought. "Sharpening a stick, I've actually seen people do that in movies and it looks easy." Amused, I grinned as I searched the pile for another decent branch. "Guess it's a day for doing things you never thought you'd ever do in your life."

When it had become clear that this island layover was gonna' take longer than a few days, Gabriel had fallen back into his old habit of hanging back and observing. He'd tried to steer clear of Sayid, knowing he and the Iraqi would eventually have to have a discussion about what had happened in Sydney, and so he spent the rest of his time working out the friendlies, the hostiles, and the in-between. There was plenty to keep his mind analyzing, even without their mysterious mammoth friend in the jungle.
He gave Rose a friendly smile and a hello before claiming some fruit and wandering away from the buffet. He noticed that the little blonde girl and the young lady with the abundance of curly hair seemed to be working on a project among the makeshift construction supplies. He also noticed the multiple knives on the woman's person and assumed that Locke guy had given them up willingly.
"You two look like you're loaded for bear," Gabe remarked, gesturing toward the weapons collection while casually juggling a mango between his hands. "Or maybe it's boar....?"

Tossing aside a bunch of shorter branches probably better suited for firewood uncovered another branch of promising length. I pulled it free and stood, sticking one end into the sand then put pressure on it to check its sturdiness.
"You two look like you're loaded for bear,"
With a quizzical expression, I turned toward the unfamiliar voice. Looking toward the three knives he gestured at clipped to my jeans, his meaning clicked into place.
"Or maybe it's boar....?"
Amused at the thought of myself hunting anything ever, I looked back up and despite the fact I could never keep a straight face, I tried to at least sound serious. Knowing Sarah could be squeamish around strangers, especially of the male variety, I held out my hand for her to grab onto if she wished while I contributed to the ice breaking. "Sarah and I are making spears. We're gonna go find that polar bear and make him turn over his stash of Coca-Cola. Right, Sarah?" I asked, looking down and giving her a wink. "I just can't quit the stuff," I added after an exaggerated sigh.

"Sarah and I are making spears. We're gonna go find that polar bear and make him turn over his stash of Coca-Cola. Right, Sarah? I just can't quit the stuff."
Gabe reacted with a slight chuckle, grateful that someone was able to keep their sense of humor in the face of their circumstances. "Well, the first step is admitting that you have a problem, so I'm proud of you," he praised with mock sincerity. He briefly placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder before squatting down to be on the little girl's level while inspecting the collection of branches. "I don't think these twigs are gonna' be much help against a polar bear, though. What are we actually huntin' for?" he inquired, making an intent use of the term 'we.' It wasn't meant as chivalry or chauvinism, he just wanted them to know he was willing to commit to whatever endeavour they were up to.

Sarah chuckled at Heidi's words, she was positive that none of them would be able to spear a fish. At least not without many many attempts, maybe even days of practice. She tested the vines again but paused when she heard a man's voice.
"You two look like you're loaded for bear, Or maybe it's boar....?" She took Heidi's hand that was offered and stared at the man, head tilted to the side.
"Sarah and I are making spears. We're gonna go find that polar bear and make him turn over his stash of Coca-Cola. Right, Sarah? I just can't quit the stuff," Sarah smirked and nodded her head, watching as the man got a bit closer. He touched Heidi but she didn't seem to mind but when he got closer to her she backed up a little.
"Too close," She said quickly, "You go there," she walked around him and made a little x in the sand before quickly returning to Heidi.

I looked down at Sarah when she quickly returned her hold on me, giving her a comforting hug to my side to let her know everything was okay.
"She's a bossy little miss," I said, looking back to the man with slight apology in my smile. There was a reason Sarah was the way she was and a reason for the demands she made so reprimanding was definitely out of the question. Thankfully, most people tended to pick up on the vibe fairly quickly. "Efficiently so when it comes to sand castle building."
I answered the question he'd put to Sarah on her behalf. "We are going to attempt spearfishing." There wasn't any seriousness to my expression, only amusement. My unspoken impression that we'd be utterly unsuccessful and I was perfectly okay with that.
