Gabe did a double take at the "X" that the girl had placed in the sand. But given the serious expression on Sarah's face, he thought it best not to argue. So he stood back up with a sigh and took his mark. "Um, okay, I'm Gabriel," he began, placing his free hand on his chest, "but everybody calls me 'Gabe', and you must be..." He extended that same hand toward Sarah but soon realized that no reply was forthcoming. "...Related to my ex-wife, judging by that look."
"She's a bossy little miss. Efficiently so when it comes to sand castle building. We are going to attempt spearfishing."
"Duly noted," he said with a nod. "Well, fishing would definitely add some variety to the menu. Need some help?" He figured he needed to start pitching in more, as sleeping and sulking had been less than productive. So he placed his mango lunch aside and began sorting through palm fronds. "See, the thing about fish is they're fast. If you want to increase your margin of error, and thus your chances of catching said fish, you'd do better with a net." As he talked, he placed several rows of palm fronds lengthwise and then began to weave another set of palm fronds vertically between them. "Over and under, like so. And the tighter we weave it, the stronger it'll be."

"Duly noted," "Well, fishing would definitely add some variety to the menu. Need some help?"
"Sure, we could use it." Particularly from someone who seemed to know what he was doing. This little venture into distraction might actually end up being productive.
"See, the thing about fish is they're fast. If you want to increase your margin of error, and thus your chances of catching said fish, you'd do better with a net."
I turned with Sarah to listen as Gabe gave us insight on fishing while he adjusted palm fronds, weaving them this way and that, seeing them start to transform into what would be a net. 'Yup, improve our chances by 100%,' I thought.
"Over and under, like so. And the tighter we weave it, the stronger it'll be."
This was such an easy pattern, especially to someone who loved puzzles. "I think we could do that," I said confidently. I gave Sarah's hand an encouraging squeeze before letting go so I could kneel down in the sand beside Gabe to try my hand at it. "I'm Heidi, by the way." I offered my hand then looked at Sarah, giving her a nod toward Gabe, trying to indicate that this new person passed my trust test in hopes that it would encourage her to open up to the idea of trusting him also. "And this is Sarah."

Sarah was glad when the man named Gabe moved to the X, he was a good listener and respected her boundaries. She listened intently to both Heidi and Gabe as they talked, Heidi seemed to trust him but she was skeptical. She watched as Gabe weaved the palm fronds, "Over and under, like so. And the tighter we weave it, the stronger it'll be."
"I think we could do that, I'm Heidi, by the way. And this is Sarah."
Sarah knelt down on Heidi's side and she waved at Gabe but continued to keep her distance. She grabbed some of the palm fronds and started to weave them like he had said. She was good at picking things up, it took her a couple tries but she got it. "Tight, over and under." She nodded.

"I think we could do that, I'm Heidi, by the way. And this is Sarah."
"Tight, over and under."
"Nice to meet you, ladies," Gabe said, pausing in his weaving to give them both a congenial smile. It was good to have an assignment, even if it was self-imposed. The repetitive activity made use of his steady hands while calming his unsettled mind. He used one of the bamboo chutes to reinforce one edge of the makeshift net, wrapping and knotting the loose palm fronds to secure them.
"Well, I am fairly sure we will have a net-gain of fresh fish by the end of the day," he proclaimed. "We should make sure we catch enough for the whole camp. We wouldn't want to be shellfish about it. Maybe even set some aside for the cave dwellers, just for the halibut." He gave Heidi a wink before taking a break and tucking into his mango. "Please don't stab me. You'd have to call the sturgeon."

"Well, I am fairly sure we will have a net-gain of fresh fish by the end of the day," "We should make sure we catch enough for the whole camp. We wouldn't want to be shellfish about it.
I listened as I continued the weaving, noticing the use of 'net-gain' while we were actually making nets. I'd filed that away for my own amusement, thinking it a coincidence. 'The whole camp?' I was thinking that catching anything at all would be amazing and that he had way more confidence in our endeavor than the rest of us had had when my ears caught the word 'shellfish'. A snicker almost escaped me. I glanced over at him, unsure if it had been on purpose or if he'd misspoken.
Maybe even set some aside for the cave dwellers, just for the halibut."
I chuckled with an expression that was a combination of amusement and a cringe. Definitely on purpose. "Very punny," I added because there was no such thing as too many puns in my opinion.
"Please don't stab me. You'd have to call the sturgeon."
I busted out laughing. "So bad," I finally managed to say before adding to the punfest. "Tempting, but I wouldn't wanna make anemone of you." I gave him a cheesy 'see what I did there?' grin. The laughing had been therapeutic. I was feeling so much better after yesterday's horrible ordeal. "Seems we've caught ourselves a clownfish," I said, turning to Sarah. "What do you think, Sarah? Should we keep him or release him?"

In Gabe's opinion, the first annual island fishing tournament had been a rousing success. Granted, there were no massive blue marlins to display, but they had managed to catch three mackerel tuna and avoid any hostile ocean dwellers. The bucket that Linda had "borrowed" from Sawyer's stash proved more effective than their homemade net, but it had proven a good surface on which to lay out the fish for cleaning.
More importantly, Gabe had managed to end his self-imposed isolation. In addition to Heidi and Sarah, he'd met Linda, sister to the rock star Charlie; Alisha, a young woman traveling alone; and Stu, a fellow smartass who seemed equally fond of throwing verbal and physical jabs. There were moments when Gabe thought he recognized similar signs of PTSD in the man, but he didn't seem fond of chatting. Alisha seemed rather subdued as well, but it was likely the circumstances of being so far from home and on her own. For the most part, the group spent the afternoon either trying not to drown or confusing and frightening the fish into submission. And maybe they all needed a good laugh.
But a glimpse of Sayid brought him crashing back to reality. "Hey, I, uh," he told Heidi, "I gotta' go take care of something. I'll be right back." He had kept his distance since the crash, fairly sure that the Iraqi had nothing to say to him that hadn't already been made clear in the debriefing. However, Sayid looked like he was preparing for a trip as he stuffed some clothing into a backpack.
"Hey, Jarrah," he said, approaching Sayid. "You headin' out on another hike? 'Cause you're gonna' miss a fabulous seafood dinner...."

(Sayid temp-played by Ariel)
Just when Sayid thought he had a handle on things, he lost himself again. He promised that he would never torture another person again, and today he slipped up and fell backwards into a pit of doubt and despair. Placing an article of clothing into the backpack he looked down at his hands and although he had scrubbed them clean, to him they were still dirty. Not just with the blood of Sawyer, but the blood of many others from before. Looking around at the faces of the survivors around him, he no longer felt like he had a place amongst these good people. He couldn’t harm another one again. And until Sayid found himself again, he knew that he had to go away. So he grabbed anything and everything he could pack away in his bag. He wasn’t sure for how long, but he knew that he couldn’t stay.
“Hey, Jarrah,"
Zipping up the backpack, Sayid looked upward to find Gabe approaching. He nodded in Gabe’s direction as he came closer to Sayid.
"You headin' out on another hike? 'Cause you're gonna' miss a fabulous seafood dinner...."
Sayid picked the backpack up from the ground, swinging one of the straps over his shoulder, “As enticing as that sounds, I’ll have to pass. I don’t have much of an appetite anyways,” Sayid mentioned before spotting grid paper and some pencils amongst some supplies by where they stood and bent down to reach for the materials before coming back up to face Gabe, “Someone’s got to start mapping out the island, to see what else this place holds. I thought I’d get a head start.”

“As enticing as that sounds, I’ll have to pass. I don’t have much of an appetite anyways ... Someone’s got to start mapping out the island, to see what else this place holds. I thought I’d get a head start.”
Gabe's eyebrows flicked upward. "Oh, a new project?" he inquired. "Thought maybe you were just avoiding me, but now you want to avoid everyone. You really think it's a good idea to head out there alone? Pretty sure you're not gonna’ find a Radio Shack to fix that broken transceiver.”
Gabe stepped closer and leveled his gaze at the Iraqi. "Look, I know I'm the last person you want any advice from. The ultimatum that Cole gave you was messed up, I’m not saying I agree with her. But what she did, what we all did, was for the greater good. A lot of people lived that day, because Essam's plan was stopped. By you.” Sayid had stepped up for the CIA but in doing so, he had lost a close friend. He couldn't imagine the mix of betrayal and regret that Sayid had been dealing with since they had charged him with this mission.
He sighed and glanced out at the ocean. “Look, I…I know things went badly in Sydney—" he admitted, well aware that it was an understatement. "But Essam made a choice. That is not on you, man.”

Sayid looked away from Gabe in upmost frustration. He did not want to talk about this now, nor did he want to remember the events that took place in Sydney. It had all been for her - for Nadia. And yes, peoples lives were saved from being wiped in a martyr attempt. But in result, he lost someone else that he had held dear to his heart. With these burning memories resurfacing courtesy of the CIA member before him, he was left with no words.
“Look, I…I know things went badly in Sydney—" "But Essam made a choice. That is not on you, man.”
"That's easy for you to say...do you know what it is like to wake up in the middle of the night, having to relive your best friend taking his own life in your nightmares, over and over?" Sayid asked furiously, not caring to await for an answer, "I must go. Goodbye Gabe...perhaps we will cross paths again."

"That's easy for you to say...do you know what it is like to wake up in the middle of the night, having to relive your best friend taking his own life in your nightmares, over and over? I must go. Goodbye Gabe...perhaps we will cross paths again."
Gabe opened his mouth to reply but thought better of it. Sayid was set on leaving, and Gabe knew he was nowhere close to being the person that could change his mind. And maybe he didn't know exactly what Jarrah was going through, but he had plenty nightmares of his own. Ones that weren't being eased by this unexpected beach vacation. "Well, fine," he finally said, to no one. "Wasn't enough fish for you anyway."
He shook it off and sauntered back to where he'd left his fishing party. "So that's one less for dinner," he announced. "Sayid said he's leaving to map the island." Gabe removed one of the fish from the bucket and placed it on their makeshift cleaning counter. Using one of Heidi's borrowed knives, he deftly made a diagonal slice behind its head, then continued slicing along the body down to the tail. It wasn't pretty work but a tuna filet would be a welcome break from boar.

Myself and the rest of the fishing crew had brought it in for the day and were setting up a prepping station. The time had flown by and judging by the amount of laughter and banter that had gone on, everyone had had as much fun as I'd had. Miraculously, we'd managed to catch three whole fish. That was a whole three more than I'd anticipated.
The ever efficient Gabe repurposed some of the items for the next step, turning the bucket over as a cleaning table and getting ready to use the knives to gut the fish. This was the part I was least looking forward to. It made me queasy to watch it happening in movies and on shows so I was guessing it wouldn't be any better in person. Worse, most likely, as the sense of smell would now play a role. 'Yay.'
"Hey, I, uh," "I gotta' go take care of something. I'll be right back."
"Sure, take your time," I said, not really paying attention to what it was that had pulled his attention elsewhere. He'd done far more than enough in helping us. As far as I was concerned, he had every right to consider his work done here and not return. But I got the impression that went against his nature.
"So that's one less for dinner,"
With a cryptic statement, Gabe had returned a lot quicker than I'd expected. I stopped to look at him questioningly.
"Sayid said he's leaving to map the island."
"What?" I said incredulously, shifting in my spot on the ground to scan the beach until I spotted Sayid walking alone parallel to the shore. "That's crazy," I said, looking back at Gabe with concern. The thought of Sayid heading out alone with that scary ass thing in the jungle set the wound on my leg to itching. Mental note, probably also because I needed to reclean and rebandage it after having been immersed in ocean water. I subconsciously rubbed my bandaged ankle through my still damp jeans, looking again toward Sayid's retreating form. Obviously Gabe had already tried to stop him. I tried to imagine something I could say or do to convince Sayid otherwise but if Gabe hadn't been able to, I couldn't imagine I could.
The fact that Sayid had helped me right after the crash, then had gone on to try to help everyone on several dangerous missions had earned him a spot high on my 'Practical Strangers I Care About' list. I turned back toward Gabe just as he was starting to pull guts out of the fish. "Did he say when he was gonna be back?" I asked, keeping optimistic in Sayid's endeavor and perhaps sounding a bit distracted with my concentration shifting to not gagging.

"What? That's crazy ... Did he say when he was gonna be back?"
"Ah, don't you worry, Miss Heidi," Gabe replied. "Sayid's a big boy, he can take care of himself." He continued the process of cleaning the fish, flipping it over and slicing a fillet off the other side. He placed both pieces on another part of his woven placement and reached for the next fish. When it registered that Heidi hadn't come back at him with another witty remark, he finally looked up and took in the sincere concern on her face.
"Hey, he'll be okay," Gabe repeated, more seriously this time. "I think it's crazy, too, but he seemed pretty determined. For whatever reason, he believes he needs to be elsewhere right now, so I gotta' respect that. And maybe he will find something out there."

Jasmine spent the rest of the morning just relaxing and trying to get some extra sleep. She was feeling better but she was still on edge, she really didn't want to see Jordan again- not under those circumstances. She had caught sight of the fishing party earlier but kept her distance, not feeling social or in the mood to step foot near the water.
As Jasmine past, she gave a wave to the Heidi, Sarah, Linda, Alisha, and some guy she had not met yet. Maybe she's join in there conversation but right now she needed some water.

I never thought I would have any fun fishing but it was a nice distraction. Nor did I expect to catch anything but I was certainly glad- even if I wasn't a huge fan of fish. I knew it would be a nice change from fruit and boar, this was after all survival- you eat what you can.
I stayed back and just watched everyone interact, helping when I could and trying my best to ignore my sore leg. It was still hurting, probably because I was sleeping on the sand and not elevating it.
"I'm sure Gabe is right, Sayid will be fine. We should probably tell Jack or Kate though, just in case something happens." I watch as Jasmine walked by, giving her a wave in return.

Sarah was just staring at the fish, looking at them. She didn't like when things just stared at her, it made her feel weird. Her food shouldn't have eyes, no eyes, "I don't like it." She stated, not to anyone in particular and decided to turn away from the fish. "They are staring at me!" She said louder.

"See, Alisha knows I'm right," Gabe proclaimed, throwing her an agreeable smile. "And yes, I think we should let Jack know, whenever he decides to come down from the caves. Also means someone else'll have to take over with the signal fires."
"I don't like it. ... They are staring at me!"
Heidi had already registered her displeasure at the whole fish-cleaning process, but now the little girl was voicing her concern. Just a bit louder and more distraught. He'd gathered that Sarah observed and processed everything in her own distinct way, but that didn't really help him in knowing how to handle it.
"Hey, hey," he said in a calming tone. "I can totally take care of that." With a well-practiced swiftness, he used his knife to chop off one of the fish's heads and used the blade to flick it over his shoulder into the opposite hand waiting behind his back. Who said hibachi chefs were the only ones with moves? "See? No more tuna fish givin' you the stink-eye."

Bennett eyed the small gathering of survivors on the beach, gawking at their well earned catches of the day. Peeling a ripened banana under a tree that graciously provided some cooling shade, he wanted to join them as to not look so suspicious sitting off on his own, to assimilate as easily as he had done within the first few days. But he was growing weary, and ever frustrated than before. Ben's words swirled around in his mind, Bennett just couldn't make sense of all of this. He hoped it would all make sense and that their efforts weren't for nothing. Soon.

Linda was surprised that she had a lot more fun on the group fishing extravaganza than she had imagined. Although it would have been nice for Stu to have joined, Linda figured he probably had better things to do. A fun moment that made them forget that they were stranded with no luck of rescue, just for a few moments at least. Successful smiles beamed all around as they brought their plentiful buckets of catches to the makeshift cleaning counter set up. Yet, Linda's mind lost touch with the conversation at hand when she noticed Bennett brooding in the distance. She watched him with curious eyes as he didn't seem to go out of his way to bother with any of the other survivors as of late.
"Hey, hey," "I can totally take care of that." "See? No more tuna fish givin' you the stink-eye."
Gabe's voice brought Linda back to the present moment. Usually Linda would have let Bennett be as she knew that some people just needed to be by themselves, but a strange feeling overcame her and she couldn't shake it. "What's that guy's story over there?" Linda nodded towards Bennett in the distance, "He hasn't really talked to anyone much this last little while, just kind of stands off on his own. Is that weird to anyone?" Linda wasn't sure if she was concerned for Bennett or for her fellow survivors, all she knew was that this guy was nothing but a mystery thus far.

"Ah, don't you worry, Miss Heidi," "Sayid's a big boy, he can take care of himself."
Sayid definitely seemed capable of taking care of himself. He volunteered to go along on practically every mission and there was an aura about him of someone who's been through and seen a lot of things. A survivor. Still, I couldn't help wondering if anything learned off-island could help a person who stumbled across the island's native creature. I stared unseeing as Gabe prepared the fish while the memory of the creature's unnatural sound, both vocally and in the way it moved replayed in my mind. It wasn't normal and had haunted my dreams last night, even sneaking into my thoughts a couple times today when I wasn't keeping myself distracted enough. Or times like now, when my attention was drawn to someone heading into the jungle.
"Hey, he'll be okay,"
The sound of Gabe addressing me again startled me out of those bad memories. I'd managed to keep it to a barely discernable twitch and quickly suppressed the memories to the back of my mind.
"I think it's crazy, too, but he seemed pretty determined. For whatever reason, he believes he needs to be elsewhere right now, so I gotta' respect that. And maybe he will find something out there."
I relaxed as he spoke, the concern on my features turning to understanding and acceptance.
"I'm sure Gabe is right, Sayid will be fine. We should probably tell Jack or Kate though, just in case something happens."
I nodded in agreement with Alisha. Jasmine passed by and I returned her wave, making a mental note to check on her later as I realized I hadn't seen much of her today.
"See, Alisha knows I'm right," "And yes, I think we should let Jack know, whenever he decides to come down from the caves. Also means someone else'll have to take over with the signal fires."
"I don't like it. ... They are staring at me!"
Leave it to Sarah and her quirky vocalizations of her observations to get me smiling again, though I tried hard to look serious. Sometimes you just had to roll with what Sarah was saying as the best method to stop from whatever was bothering her from escalating. "They totally are. It's very rude." Definitely not as rude as us plucking them from their home to eat them but that went best unsaid.
"Hey, hey," "I can totally take care of that." "See? No more tuna fish givin' you the stink-eye."
"Wow," I said to Gabe, clearly impressed. "Dinner and a show." I looked at Sarah, hitching a thumb in Gabe's direction. "We gotta make sure we give Benihana here a nice tip. Even though I don't think he's gonna be able to pull off that smoking volcano thing they do with the onions."
"What's that guy's story over there?" "He hasn't really talked to anyone much this last little while, just kind of stands off on his own. Is that weird to anyone?"
The short lived silliness was put on pause again when Linda's concern gained my attention. Reflecting her concern, I discreetly looked in the direction she'd nodded and my concern dissipated. "Bennett? He and his cousin seem do that," I said, shrugging it off. "I just figured they're kinda introverts. Bennett doesn't seem like the type to initiate a conversation but he'll talk to you if you approach him. His cousin..." I paused trying to recall what Bennett had called him the day before on our walk to the beach, "...Ethan. I haven't really talked to him. Come to think of it," I said, suddenly sitting back and looking around the whole camp when something odd did dawn on me, "I don't even recall seeing him around much. Ever, really. But that's probably just me," I said with a dismissive wave, trying not to add to more paranoia. "I tend to get absorbed in my own little world and don't notice much around me."

"They totally are. It's very rude." It was very rude and she didn't like it when people stared. The dead eyes of the fish made her very uneasy.
"I can totally take care of that." Sarah peered over her shoulder and watched as he took a knife and chopped off its head. Sarah wasn't sure how to process that information, she kind of just stood there and stared at him. "See? No more tuna fish givin' you the stink-eye."
"Wow, dinner and a show. We gotta make sure we give Benihana here a nice tip. Even though I don't think he's gonna be able to pull off that smoking volcano thing they do with the onions." It was all to much and she felt off, like something was different. Her thoughts, her feelings, It was just so new.
"Heidi," She clung to Mr. Floppers, "I feel weird." her hands were shaking.

All playful, lighthearted banter immediately left me and my full attention went to Sarah. I shifted to kneel in front of her, pushing her hair from her face so I could check her over. Unfortunately, I didn't really know what it was I was looking for. I wasn't a mother and had never known anyone personally with Sarah's condition but I could tell when something was wrong.
I placed a comforting hand into one of her shaking ones as she clung to Mr. Floppers. "Do you need to lie down for a bit? Do you need some of your medicine?" I asked, looking for a bit of guidance from her. Hopefully it wasn't bad enough that she'd need Jack to look her over. He'd gone and disappeared again, probably back to the caves.

"Do you need to lie down for a bit? Do you need some of your medicine?" Sarah wasn't sure what she needed, would a nap help? Would her meds help? This was so much different then anything she felt before, she was scared and overwhelmed but everything was clear and that is what scared her the most.
The second he cut that head, she felt a moment of clarity and as a child she did not like it. "I need to go." Sarah held onto Mr. Floppers and marched her way towards her own shelter. She just needed a little time...

"Wow, dinner and a show. We gotta make sure we give Benihana here a nice tip. Even though I don't think he's gonna be able to pull off that smoking volcano thing they do with the onions."
"Thank you, thank you," Gabe said, giving the ladies a deep bow in appreciation. "I'll be here all week...and probably longer." He then returned to his pescatori preparations, making sure that the fresh cut fish filets were ready to safely grill over one of the fires. He listened casually as Linda and Heidi discussed Bennett and his cousin, Ethan. Gabe got a bad vibe off both of them, but he was hardly in a position to judge someone for setting themselves apart from the crowd.
But his casual listening became more concerned as Sarah seemed to grow more agitated. Heidi had been talking to her before she made a hasty retreat. "Something I said?" he inquired of Heidi. "Look, I didn't mean to scare her. Whatever I can do to help...." Truth was, little boys were very different from little girls, especially in Sarah's case. The tricks that amused his son would not get the same response from her, and he needed to take note of that.

"Something I said?" "Look, I didn't mean to scare her. Whatever I can do to help...."
Without much warning, Sarah had taken off. "No, no. You're fine," I said, quickly scrambling to my feet. "There's a lot going on in that mind of hers. Anything can set her off. Sometimes nothing." I patted his shoulder to add reassurance, hoping he wasn't feeling guilty. I gave the group a quick look and excused myself. "I'm gonna go after her."
With that, I rushed after Sarah.

"I just figured they're kinda introverts. Bennett doesn't seem like the type to initiate a conversation but he'll talk to you if you approach him. His cousin..." "...Ethan. I haven't really talked to him. Come to think of it," "I don't even recall seeing him around much. Ever, really. But that's probably just me," "I tend to get absorbed in my own little world and don't notice much around me."
Linda furrowed her brow slightly to coincide with Heidi's puzzlement before throwing her gaze back into Bennett's direction. If he was in introvert, she totally got it as she tended to seek solace in her own company and quite enjoyed it too. Despite her own introverted ways, she knew about most of the survivors in their group and they knew about her. But the fact that they knew next to nothing about the two cousins left Linda's imagination to grow wild and she could only hope that they weren't a pair of serial killers waiting to strike. Though Linda brushed off the unlikely assumption and knew it would be a matter of time before they came around just as she had.
"Look, I didn't mean to scare her. Whatever I can do to help...."
"I'm gonna go after her."
Heidi went after little Sarah who hadn't been feeling so well, leaving Gabe and Linda with the fish filets.
"I'm sure she just needed a break, Sarah needs her space sometimes," Linda smiled at Gabe as she noticed his look of slight guilt as their company departed, "You got any kids?"

"I'm sure she just needed a break, Sarah needs her space sometimes. You got any kids?"
"Because I'm clearly so good around them?" Gabe quipped, though he was appreciative of the British girl's attempt to console him. "Yeah, I got a little boy, Dylan. He, uh, he'd be loving it here -- running around, jumping in the water, climbing trees. Back on my farm, he was always into something. Wannabe cowboy like his dad.
"But I guess that's not as cool as having two brothers in a rock band," he prompted, eager to get the attention off himself and what was, or was not, waiting back home. "I admit it, I bought the album. That song was friggin' everywhere!"

"Look, I didn't mean to scare her. Whatever I can do to help...." I felt a bit squeazy about the head cutting, so, I couldn't imagine how Sarah felt about it.
"I'm gonna go after her." I watched as Heidi left, going to check on Sarah before turning my attention back to the group.

"Because I'm clearly so good around them?" "Yeah, I got a little boy, Dylan. He, uh, he'd be loving it here -- running around, jumping in the water, climbing trees. Back on my farm, he was always into something. Wannabe cowboy like his dad. "
Linda couldn't help but to grin as she watched the father beam about his son. Talking about family, home - it made Linda feel human once again, just for a minute before they were brought back from their distractions to the harsh reality of the survival crisis they all faced together.
"But I guess that's not as cool as having two brothers in a rock band,""I admit it, I bought the album. That song was friggin' everywhere!"
Linda grew slightly perplexed as she drew back slightly the moment that the attention was pointed onto her. She never usually indulged in the personal details of her own life, but these people where all she had and she knew that they all had to build up their trust in one another if they were going to make it through. She chuckled uncomfortably as she peered down to the sand, "Yeah, I guess. It definitely wasn't all sunshine and daisies but they had their run," Linda looked up at her company and grinned at the fellow survivors as painful memories of the past resurfaced, ones she'd tried to hard to forget.
"I uh, I think I'm gonna go check on that guy over there. See if he needs anything," Linda commented rashly as she grabbed a couple of water bottles and headed over to Bennett. She needed a new distraction, one that didn't remind her of painful resentment.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peering into the large glass window of the hospital's nursery, Linda gazed upon her niece sleeping soundly after her tiring journey into this big, new world. Peaceful and pure did the new babe look, swaddled in a pink blanket, almost porcelain like. The tiny human was of absolute perfection and Linda wanted nothing more than to be bursting with joy at the arrival of her new family member. Yet, Linda had been stewing quietly to herself in resentful thoughts for some time now as she stood silent next to her brother Charlie, the burning tension in the room thickening to the point of overflow.
"Thought you weren't going to show." Linda finally uttered under her breath to Charlie as she continued to glare forward into the glass window, arms folded tightly over her chest.
"...Of course I was going to show. We're family."
"Really?" Linda's voice quivered with anger as she remained to keep her voice low, "Because we haven't felt like a family in a really long time, Charlie. You don't call or contact us in months, and now here you are, proclaiming that we're family?!" Linda brought her hands down to rest on her hips as the build up continued, "Where is he, Charlie? Where's Liam?"
"I've told you, he missed his flight and he's on his way."
Linda finally tore her gaze from the window and looked at Charlie, her reddened eyes about to overflow with burning tears, "He's doped up, isn't he? Isn't he?"
Charlie looked back at his sister, but words couldn't come out. He couldn't speak, couldn't lie any longer.
"Charlie? Hey!"
Both Linda and Charlie's heads snapped around to find Liam's wife, Karen, entering the corridor dressed in hospital attire. Looking away to wipe her tears, she took a few steps backward to give Karen and Charlie some space. The last thing the new mother needed was more stress about her husband missing the birth of their first child.
"She's beautiful, Karen."
"I named her Megan."
Linda's eyes flickered upward at the sound of the familiar name. Their mother's name. Someone who hadn't been mentioned in quite some time.
"Where's Liam?"
"Karen, look, it wasn't his fault. We were leaving the club in Dresden -- I was in a cab --…."
Linda shook her head. Charlie was making excuses for Liam, and apart of Linda understood why he did this. But her rational side was gone, and she felt hurt and betrayed by these brothers of hers. Perhaps these feelings grew within her the moment they walked out of her life to pursue their fifteen minutes of fame. But the lifestyle changed them. Linda didn't know them anymore. These weren't her brothers, and they were no longer family. And she wouldn't be put through this heartache again. Unable to bear listening to the lies, Linda slipped away unnoticed and vowed to never speak to them again.
