Sarah sat by Heidi and ate her breakfast silently as she watched the camp wake for the day. Sarah hadn't been sleeping much these last couple of nights. Everything still felt new and it was scarier for her but she was getting used to it. Normally, Sarah would be agitated and fidgety without her medication. Thrashing, even random acts of harm but now she was calm and most importantly clear.
"Here, hold this, Sarah sweetie, I need to ask Gabe something."
"Okay, I'll stay here." Sarah watched as Heidi headed over to Gabe, chatting with him about something. Sarah stayed silent and ate, watching the world around her. The sounds of the ocean were calming and she closed her eyes for just a few seconds.
Sarah wasn't sure how much time passed but Gwen came by with fruit, "Morning, to you and Mr. Floppers."
"Good Morning, Miss Gwen. Mr. Floppers says good morning too." Sarah's smile faded when Spencer came over and started to get loud and quite rude.
“Do you also remember WHY we had to burn the fuselage? There are members of your co-workers, your family, still out there in the jungle … do you want them being dragged off and pulled apart by boars just like it had happened here? Think about it … we can burry or burn everyone we still find. No one else seems to care about that. It’s bigger than you! Bigger than your fears.” Sarah was very smart for her age and understood a lot of things, before she had trouble speaking her mind but not right now she didn't. She balled her little fists up and tried to take some calming breaths. “Kate’s decided to be coming too. She too thinks there is unfinished business at the cockpit, for some of us. So you don’t need to worry about bathroom breaks.”
"You're not very nice," Sarah stood up and face off with Spencer, eyes narrowed as she looked up into his eyes. "It's not nice to make Miss Gwen feel that way! You are being mean and trying to make her feel guilty so she takes you into the jungle. You can go by yourself and be eaten by the monster, Miss Gwen isn't going." And that is when she takes a handful of sand and tosses it into his face.

"I'm sure she can handle it," "But she does know the plane better than anyone else here, so he's not that far off from maybe having a point...
I continued to frown. He may have a point, but it didn't mean I had to like it.
"Mornin'"
"Mornin' Gwen," I said as she passed and sat down to keep Sarah company, allowing me to stop dividing my attention between grown up talk and keeping an eye on her.
Anyway," "How are you feeling? Sleeping okay?"
Preferring not to linger on the thought of Gabe and Spencer and possibly Gwen heading into the jungle, I went along with the change of subject. "Better," I said, my frown easing into an appreciative grin. "I've managed to sleep through the night since--"
I was cut off as Spencer showed up close on the heels of Gwen, still adamantly making his case.
It took me a few seconds to recover from the shock of him painting the colorful picture of boars and the bodies of their fellow passengers right in front of Sarah. "Spencer!" I said with disapproving shock but he continued on his roll. I started to rush back toward Sarah to drag her out of earshot of this conversation but before I could make it, the little spitfire was on her feet facing off against him, then throwing sand at him. "Sarah!" I said, transferring that same shocked disapproval as I rushed over and took her hand, starting to pull her away. I quickly glanced at the others, landing with a pointed glare at Spencer. "This is not appropriate conversation in front of a child." Or anyone, for that matter. I sure as hell didn't want the images he'd just put into my head.
I pulled Sarah along, feeling her squirm a bit in defiance. "Let the grown-ups work this out," I said sternly, then felt her give in to being led away.

Gabe tried to stifle a smirk as Spencer got a fistful of sand to the face from the little blonde girl. Well, 'grown-ups' was a debatable term. But once Heidi had led Sarah away, he figured he should intervene. Not solely for the sake of his wager, but to prevent Spencer's ego from alienating someone whose help they still needed.
"Hey, hey, simmer down, buddy," Gabe advised, stepping between them and holding a restraining hand up to Spencer's chest. "The lady said her peace. She doesn't have to go."
Then he turned back to Gwen, producing a small pad of paper and a pencil from his pocket. "But if you can write down where you think we could find supplies, equipment, anything of use, it would be a big help."

Gwen's mood shifted quickly from anger to embarrassment. She certainly didn't need to be reminded of what could happen to the bodies left in the cockpit, nor did she wish to be the focus of anyone else's attention. Once out of uniform, she was anonymous and equal, just like everyone else in the crowd of survivors. And though she welcomed Sarah and then Heidi's intervention, she resented that it was necessary in the first place.
"Hey, hey, simmer down, buddy. The lady said her peace. She doesn't have to go. ... But if you can write down where you think we could find supplies, equipment, anything of use, it would be a big help."
"Of course," Gwen said with a nod, taking the offered paper from Gabe. The same offer she had so kindly made to the arrogant airman, but he was too foolhardy to take it. "I'll get it to you before you go." As she made her way back to her shelter, she made a point not to meet Spencer's gaze.

When the little one started to talk Spencer was slightly thrown. Did deaf kids usually talk?! What WAS she even talking about if she couldn’t hear what he’d said. The whole ordeal left only one conclusion, that she wasn’t actually deaf. Oh well, minor misjudgment on his part. It was not like he habitually evaluated the threat level of Oompa Loompas. There was no need of it. Caught up in his thought, regardless, he managed to close his eyes in reflex and turn his face to the side slightly as a cloud of dust and tiny gravel came his way. This was why he didn’t usually involve children, tiny women no less, in his business. They were even more emotional and unstable than their older counterparts.
“The ‘monster’ hasn’t eaten ANYBODY …” Spence simply stated, after the fact, shaking his pate to let sand trickle from his similarly colored hair and brows. Running index finger and thumb through the hollow each side of his nose to clear away remaining dust from his lashes he gave the departing pair a mere sideways glance. “… maybe it only eats children.” He then added, almost as an after thought, when they were gone. Not as concerned with the girl being out of earshot as it may have seemed. Though Heidi’s comments and stern glance were duly noted the ex-military still saw no reason to keep anyone, not even a little girl, away from the reality around the for the sake of peace of mind.
Looking up at Gabe with visible perplexity, Spencer spread his arms out to his sides slightly with an incredulous twitch of the head. Why was everyone acting like he was shouting the whole camp down? Sure, his voice had pitched from flippant and charming to serious and calm but it had not risen in volume. “I believe all she’s made are excuses, but sure, let’s go with that.” he shrugged simply, giving Gwen a plain look. It wa through her continuous defiance that he noticed they were right, he didn’t ‘need’ her to come with. His ego had tricked him into believing that there was an alternative value to her company other than simply winning a bet. Shaking his head internally this would be the last time he’d take any advice from his so-called self-reflection.
“Sure, let’s take the list … I don’t think I’ll have the time to fix the Sat-Com AND follow a scavenger map through the galley but I am sure Saint Gabe over here will gladly pick up the slack. Seeinga s he’s so valiantly advocating for your release.” Spencer was not making a big riddle out of conveying that he thought Gwen was pushing off responsibilities on someone else for aforementioned peace of mind. Otherwise known as delusion of safety. Just because the monster hadn’t come out of the jungle onto the beach yet didn’t mean it couldn’t. But sure, if she needed a mirage of safety comprising of blue tarp and white sand then it should be all hers.
When Gwen was about to leave, however, Spencer sifted through the back-pocket of his pants to produce a crinkled pack of smokes, flipping it over towards Gabe. “Seems like you earned ‘em. You kinda manipulated her in your favor but my shirtless second attempt of asking her wasn’t exactly ‘fair’ either. So enjoy, but don’t smoke ‘em all at once.” He winked with a smile. And just like that, leaving a potential grenade without the safety pin right there on the floor, he scurried off. There was still the potential question of acquiring the Marshall’s gun. Or an equal weapon of self-defense. Since now there didn’t seem to be a potential maiden sacrifice on the track.

And now Gwen's pendulum was swinging right back to anger. It wasn't 'excuses' she was offering, as Spencer claimed; it was perfectly legitimate reasons for not being foolish enough to wander into the jungle. If Spencer had such a massive problem with that, he was quite welcome to bugger off. She'd be happy to help Gabe in the endeavor if....
“Seems like you earned ‘em. You kinda manipulated her in your favor but my shirtless second attempt of asking her wasn’t exactly ‘fair’ either. So enjoy, but don’t smoke ‘em all at once.”
Her steps were stopped short at Spencer's proclamation, and she turned slowly to see him walking off and Gabe looking back at her with a guilty expression and a pack of cigarettes in his hand. When he seemed about to launch into a flimsy argument that this wasn't what it looked like, she marched back over to him with her hazel eyes narrowed in annoyance. "You're both wankers, do you know that?"
"Is that British for 'really handsome and intelligent men'?" he replied, eyebrows raised in what he hoped was an adorable and yet apologetic expression.
"No, no, it isn't."
"Didn't think so."
"Liars forfeit. Hand over your winnings," she insisted, holding out one hand for the prized cigarette package while the other perched impatiently on her hip.
Gabe scoffed. "Psh, Havers, you don't smoke ... or do you?" The things one still didn't know about their fellow survivors even after being trapped on an island for days.
"No, I don't," she answered, "but the owner of the island market does, and who knows when I might need to make an exchange."
Exhaling a sigh of guilt mixed with acceptance, he did as instructed and placed the cigarettes in her outstretched hand. "But I was being honest about the rest of it, Gwen, you don't have to go."
"Oh, I'm going," Gwen declared. "I am not some damsel in need of rescuing, and I do not appreciate arrogant men who think they know who I am." She threw a glare at Spencer's retreating form. Well, he was already getting quite a few of them that morning. "I'm going because of what might be there and what we owe the people who didn't make it. And if we happen across any more holes like Heidi and Linda found, I trust you'll look the other way when I shove Spencer into one."
Gabe nodded in a newfound admiration. "Yes, ma'am."
"Thank you. I'll just go and pack, shall I?" With her mind made up, she crossed the beach back to her shelter.
"Welp, this is gonna' be fun," he mused aloud to himself while tossing a piece of mango in his mouth.

Scurrying away in a slow pace, moving out of eye-sight quicker than ear-shot, Spencer could very well hear the loud boom emanating from the bomb he’d dropped. For a pilot, usually traveling away faster than the speed of sound, it was a much welcomed sentiment. ‘Wankers’ … he had to chuckle. The man would’ve put that label on gladly but wasn’t so sure about Gabe. He was probably the one of the two more concerned with people’s perception … or personal wellbeing.
Hearing Gwen agree, however, Spencer’s neatly laid out plan came to a fruitful conclusion. Even if he would probably not get the smokes back for actually getting the woman to join after all, he was more than content with simply knowing he’d done it. Who ever said a plan couldn’t have four stages instead of just three? Because whenever appealing to a person’s good side, fears and subsequently sense of duty didn’t work … you could always count on the vindictive nature of someone scorned.
Smug smile on scruff-lined lips, a certain spring to his step, the man moved on through the camp. Now on the look-out for Xena, the warrior princess, who’d been on the last cockpit crusade. She’d understand duty. Spence would just have to make sure to ask her for directions out of earshot of the doc, or Saint Jack would shut them down with a stern glance and a towering glare. Not that that was any more intimidating than his random barber-shop tattoos.
Off to … wherever Kate is hanging out.

Kate gathered items for the trek to the cockpit, taking far longer than normal when doing such a thing. Her attention was divided between glances toward Sawyer's tent where Jack tending to Sawyer to be sure neither was strangling the other, glances down the beach off in the distance to where Sayid had disappeared in hopes he'd changed his mind and was returning, and thoughts of what had happened the first time they'd trekked to the cockpit.
The other things that bumped around her mind were minor in comparison but all in all, it was getting harder and harder to find something positive on her mind. Spencer's plan was a small spark of positive. Maybe that's why she'd decided to go along, despite the horrorfest the first experience had turned into.
Kate finally tracked down the second of the makeshift shovels. The first had been in good condition but this one, the vines had fully dried out and become loose and brittle, causing the shrapnel that served as the scoop to wiggle on the branch that serve as the handle.
Catching an approaching figure in the corner of her eye, Kate turned to see Spencer closing in with the obvious intent of having a word with her. Might as well take advantage and put him to work as they spoke. "Hey, Spence. Mind holding this still for me?" She held it horizontally at the angle and level she needed it and when he complied, she removed the knife borrowed from Locke from its sheath looped on her belt. She began to carefully cut away the bad vine and remained silent so he could give her an update or say whatever it was he'd tracked her down to say.

Spencer couldn’t quite manage to wipe that smug smile of triumph from his face as he approached Kate’s homestead. Beaming almost from ear to ear he stopped just when she instructed him to aid her in … what exactly was she doing? Reaching out to where she nodded, however, he held tight as demanded. Maybe one day he should think about a makeshift abode of his own. Thus far, he hadn’t seen the point. When it rained enough everyone got wet anyways, when it was windy tarps broke loose, so there really was not much point to the effort rather than occupation therapy. Actually, he enjoyed lying in his reclined business class chair watching the stars above as he fell asleep each night.
“Planning to dig for treasure?” Spence added humorously, in a metaphorical capacity. Despite this being mystery friggin’ island, it didn’t exactly seem to have been a pirate haven, or at least they hadn’t found any indication to that effect yet. Watching her cut away the old vines the man took mental note of her having the knife. It would serve them well in the jungle and he was glad someone who knew their womanly wiles had been able to do what he’d surely not been capable of. Maybe he should try coming up with not so bad uses and intents in order to get people to give him what he wanted instead of the ugly and sometimes dangerous truth.
“So, Gwen’s finally decided to tag along.” Spencer ultimately told her, after a moment of silence, not sure if she got wind of the little ‘altercation’ just minutes ago. He’d spare her the details at any rate. All that was important was that he’d succeeded. “She’s getting her stuff together right now so once you’re done with the gardening tools we can get on our merry way.” Even though his voice didn’t pitch up at the end it was almost certainly a question too. “But maybe you want to tell me as well, all the reasons, why this is a bad idea.” Mainly just to indulge his amusement. That wasn’t to say some agreement for a change wouldn’t be nice to hear as well.

*** Jack enters from Sawyer's tent ***
Jack trucked through the sand and hightailed it straight in the direction of Kate and Spencer. Once again, it looked as if Kate had found herself in the middle of some sort of adventure which made Jack nervous. Bringing his hand up to his forehead to shield the hot, beating sunlight he narrowed his gaze in on the developing situation as Kate appeared to pass her packed bag to the army man and drew a knife from her belt.
“But maybe you want to tell me as well, all the reasons, why this is a bad idea.”
"What's a bad idea?" Jack walked right up to the two, as they appeared to be knees deep in conversation. Whatever it was that they were up to, Jack had just walk right in on the details.

“Planning to dig for treasure?”
Kate glanced up with a quirk of her lips at his ability to make light of a dark situation. Gruesome as the truth may be, they'd probably all go crazy if they didn't occasionally make light of their situation. "I'd prefer that to the alternative," she muttered in response. She looped the vine around once more and knotted it, pulling tight. "To be honest, I'm not sure if there'll be anything left to bury, but if there is..." The rest didn't need to be said.
“So, Gwen’s finally decided to tag along.” “She’s getting her stuff together right now so once you’re done with the gardening tools we can get on our merry way.”
Kate only gave a rhetorical "Has she," in response to the first, feigning deep concentration on her task. She'd heard the raised voices, as had the whole camp, and though she couldn't make out what was being shouted, she'd known what it was about. "Just about done," she interjected, taking the makeshift shovel from his grasp.
“But maybe you want to tell me as well, all the reasons, why this is a bad idea.”
Kate busied herself with testing the strength of its new bonds by applying pressure on either side of the metal, satisfied when it didn't budge. "I don't--"
"What's a bad idea?"
Before she could finish proclaiming that she didn't necessarily think it was a bad idea, they were interrupted by the one person who most definitely would think it to be possibly the worst idea. Kate casually stuck the shovel into the ground and leaned down to grab her backpack. "Sitting around and doing nothing," Kate said lightly with an air of defiance as she pulled the straps over her shoulders. "Actually, Spencer has a good idea. Ready?" she asked Spencer as she pulled the shovel free and started to move in the direction of the jungle in a pointless attempt to escape the oncoming argument.

Oh … Spencer’s face fell flat if only for a moment. So she was actually thinking about burying whatever was left of the occupants of the forward part of the plane. He understood, that was her motivation, but just as building huts and shelters he judged it to be a futile notion only aimed at distracting from reality. It had been days, almost two weeks, nature had almost certainly claimed everyone and everything back by now. But he’d let Kate have that to hold on to, if she needed it. He most certainly did, if only to persuade her to tag along and lead the way.
“… you’ll have a sturdy shovel, just about as good as new.” Spence finished her sentence slightly upbeat, skirting around the subject of her shoveling needs. He had no problem with dead people, an occupational hazard (or perk), just as he had no problem with talking about death. But in situations like these it could be just as bad as yelling fire in a crowded theatre or talk about bombs on an airplane. He actually got the idea that Kate was truly up for the challenge, no matter the personal cost, he found that impressive. That was not to say that agreement wasn’t always very sexy, especially when it was agreeing to his crazy plans.
But as it so happened with the best laid out plans, there was always someone u to break them. Arching a curious brow at the doc Spencer watched the situation turn into a much deeper-rooted argument between the two. Obviously there was a little bit of school-yard ‘getting back at someone’ going on. He didn’t mind. Payback could just be as good a motivator as survival instinct was. He didn’t have much to add in the prospect of selling his plans to Jack, aside of a smug smile as he passed them man, following behind Kate. At least if the doc wanted to go after her he’d have to go through the soldier first.
“Full of them, actually.” He chimed, not able to hide his voice trailing into a chuckle.

"Actually, Spencer has a good idea. Ready?"
“Full of them, actually.”
Jack grew bemused as Kate and Spencer began to press ahead of him in the direction of the jungle. A slight chuckle escaped his nasal cavity as he knew exactly what Kate was thinking, and Jack wasn't about to give up so easily. "A resourceful guy like you, Spence, probably has a hell of a lot of ideas," Jack remarked at Spencer's comment as he jogged lightly up beside them, "But this one's looks to be not your smartest." Jack stopped in front of them as he placed his hands on the hip of his black dress pants, "Kate," Jack's tone molded into a more softer sound as his gaze moved from Spencer to Kate, "Can I talk to you for a minute?"

Kate brushed off Jack's opinion of Spencer's idea and kept pushing forward until Jack was suddenly blocking their path.
"Kate," "Can I talk to you for a minute?"
'Dammit,' she thought, her defensive wall weakening with the way he'd said her name. Her eyes finally pulled from the jungle to look at him, walls going softer with that way he had of putting so much feeling into a simple gaze.
Kate sighed in defeat, her hands falling from the grip she'd had on the backpack straps as she turned to Spencer. "Give us a minute? I'll meet you guys by the trees." Her tone was light but the stubborn determination in her eyes said that she wouldn't be swayed from her decision to go with them no matter what transpired here.

Spencer was visibly satisfied at Jack’s first remark, although the man usually prided himself on not being fazed by such trivial things as affirmation. The doc was obviously a man of many achievements – ‘letting go’ not being one of them – so his praise was worth just a little more than, let’s say, the out-of-shape physics teacher’s. For example. But then, of course, he had to go an qualify his ‘compliment’. As it was not entirely unnatural for an academic to do.
“Little judgmental, aren’t we.” Spence retorted under his breath, rubbing his forehead ever so lightly in a weak attempt of relieving the tension growing rom having yet another potential wrench thrown into his ploy. Jack didn’t even know what their plan was. “For all you know we could just be seeking some privacy to ensure the perpetual growth of our little island community.” He remarked dryly, knowing that the comment would hit multiple nerves at once. Potentially in the both of them. But he certainly had no time to indulge mawkish fixations born from a lack of options.
“Sure … 5 minutes.” he replied curtly, with a nod, turning back after an attempt to leave. “You know this argument is going to be pointless though, right?!” Spencer non-chalantly pointed between the two with an inquisitively raised brow. “If you have to waste time, just don’t make it mine.” Having spoken his peace (or piece) the tall man turned to walk over to where the group was going to meet, looking out for Gwen and Gabe as he arrived there. Closing all latches and zippers on his backpack the man squinted his pale blue orbs at the approaching cast. “Little lovers’ quarrel, it’ll just be a minute.” He told them, nodding over at Kate and Jack.

Jasmine heard the entire conversation that took place, her favorite part was the sand being thrown into a grown man's face by a little girl who barely reached his waist. Spencer was a piece of work and at some point, during his outburst, she imagined kicking him right in the dick. However, she was doing this new thing where she was trying to make friends- just not with him. Kicking people made others wary, so, she put on a fake smile and paused beside him. "I should claw your eyes out but I'm trying to be a better person. But I must say I've met a lot of dicks in my life but you by far are the biggest." She wanted to say more but her concerns were on Gwen right now, she needed to make sure her friend was okay. She left him with that and jogged after Gwen, catching up with her before she entered her shelter. "Gwen," She stood there, heart hammering in her chest. "I know-" Her voice broke slightly, Jasmine was terrified of that jungle. Her mind still playing tricks with her, she saw Jordan even know- standing at the treeline and beckoning her forward. She ignored him and focused on Gwen. "I know my pleas won't get you to stay but be careful."
They had a rough start and Jasmine knew that was her fault. She would be lying if she didn't have a slight crush on the woman. Mad at Jordan, she had hit on the flight attendant and Gwen wasn't having it- at the time Jasmine was offended and also very drunk. Once they landed on the island, things changed and Jasmine started to do right by people- she would never be that person again- thanks to Gwen and her kindness.
"-However, I'm not above getting on my knees and begging you to draw a stupid map."

"Jasmine, I appreciate your concern, but we'll be fine," Gwen tried to reassure her. And maybe herself at the same time. "Look, you know I neither trust nor like Spencer..." After all, Jasmine had been there previous day to witness most of Spencer's attempts to get her to go with them to the cockpit. "But I do trust Gabriel, and Kate's come back from multiple jungle jaunts relatively unscathed. If this plan of his has even the slightest chance of working, I need to be there to help. I know the plane better than anyone else here. And if I don't come back, you get first dibs on my stuff," she added with a forced smile and a wave toward her rather sad shelter and pile of belongings.

“Sure … 5 minutes.”“You know this argument is going to be pointless though, right?!” “If you have to waste time, just don’t make it mine.”
Jack kept his composure as he allowed Spencer to input his remarks that were just as pointless as he thought that the conversation between Jack and Kate was. Are you done? Jack's eyebrows raised at Spencer as he wanted to blurt his thoughts, yet remained silent and it was when Spencer finally had his back against him that he rolled is eyes.
"Well he seems...nice," Jack let out a nasally chuckle, shaking his head. He made sure Spencer was parked over by the tree and out of earshot of their private conversation before returning his attention back to Kate.
"I hope you have a good explanation as to what is it you're running after out there - with him - considering you and me both know what lives beyond those trees." Jack pointed his gaze to the beginning out the jungle outskirts, thick with unknown terror. He tried to keep his complexion as soft as he could for her, yet he couldn't help but to be anxious for her safety.

"Jasmine, I appreciate your concern, but we'll be fine," Everyone always said that and then bad things happened, Jasmine was not convinced. "Look, you know I neither trust nor like Spencer..." No she did not... "But I do trust Gabriel, and Kate's come back from multiple jungle jaunts relatively unscathed. If this plan of his has even the slightest chance of working, I need to be there to help. I know the plane better than anyone else here. And if I don't come back, you get first dibs on my stuff,"
"Not funny," Jasmine took a breath and crossed her arms. Gwen was going and there was no stopping her, she knew that. All she could do was wait for her return and hope things went smoothly. "If that asshole gets your hurt, I'm going to seriously lose my cool."

"Well he seems...nice,"
Kate gave a little snort of amusement. "Yah, he's a peach," she said sarcastically.
"I hope you have a good explanation as to what is it you're running after out there - with him - considering you and me both know what lives beyond those trees."
Kate followed his gaze to the tree line, suppressing memories of what had happened last time. "Technically, we don't." Nobody had any idea what that thing was but they definitely knew what it could do. She let out a sigh, eyes downcast as she considered her side of the argument. "Jack, we can't just sit around doing nothing," she pointed out gently, finally looking up at him. She pushed a wayward strand of hair out of her face. "If someone has a good idea that might get us off this island, we have to at least try. And that thing," she gestured toward the jungle and pointed out an argument she'd been hearing a lot lately, "may seem like it lives in those trees, but it doesn't mean it'll stay there."

"Not funny. If that asshole gets you hurt, I'm going to seriously lose my cool."
Gwen laughed slightly at Jasmine's protective posture. "Believe me, spending quality time with Spencer was not on my wish list, either," she stated. "But I can't keep waiting around for someone else to do something. I'm not a hunter or a doctor or anything that's particularly useful on a deserted island. Knowing the layout of that plane is one thing I can do."
She gathered some of the first aid supplies that she'd collected from the caves the day before. "I'm hoping we'll be back before sundown but if we're not, remind Heidi to change the bandage on her leg," Gwen instructed. "And if we meet up with our mammoth friend, I promise I will run the other way as fast as I can. Hopefully faster than Spencer," she added with a smirk.

As much as Jack knew that it would be difficult for him to let Kate go back into the jungle crawling with who the hell know's what, she was right. If anyone had a possible solution to get them off of the island that had a chance of being successful, he knew that they had to try. Pondering his thoughts, Jack's gaze peered over the ocean view beside them for a brief few seconds before nodding painfully in understanding. He just knew that the whole time she would be gone, he could not help but to anxiously await her return.
"So I guess there's no use in convincing you to stay here with me?" Jack looked back at Kate as the frown that was once on his face flexed into a half grin in his lighthearted surrender.

"You have nothing to prove to anyone, Gwen. You are just as much a survivor and victim as everyone else. We all crashed on this island together," Jasmine felt strongly about this, worried that Gwen would get hurt- she couldn't imagine losing her because Spencer splashed his testosterone around.
Jasmine knew their was no changing Gwen's mind, she was going and Jasmine would have to respect that. Didn't mean she wouldn't worry, "I'm hoping we'll be back before sundown but if we're not, remind Heidi to change the bandage on her leg,"
"I will remind her and possibly help if I can-"
"And if we meet up with our mammoth friend, I promise I will run the other way as fast as I can. Hopefully faster than Spencer," Jasmine smirked and shook her head.
"Okay good," Jasmine reached out and placed a hand on Gwen's shoulder. "Come on, I'll help you get some things together for the trip."

"So I guess there's no use in convincing you to stay here with me?"
It was impossible not to grin back when he put on one of his half-grins. The fact he was sending it her way right after asking her to stay, especially with the addition of 'with me' gave her a flutter. Still grinning, Kate looked down toward the sand, the action dislodging the strand of hair she'd tucked behind her ear after it had escaped her messy up-do. "Tell you what," she said, looking back at him after taking that quick moment to compose herself under the guise of think. "First thing when we get back, I'll find you and fill you in on all the boring details."
Feeling things were settled, Kate started to head away, placing a hand on his bicep as she passed. "See you in a few."
Kate tucked the wayward strand of hair back behind her ear as she kept walking, concentrating on facing forward. 'Don't look back. Don't look back,' she mentally told herself, resisting the urge to. The more distance she gained, the more she started to feel annoyed with herself. She was getting too attached. It was definitely one of the drives behind her jumping into any opportunity to keep her distracted. Facing the dangers of the jungle was more appealing than facing her thoughts and feelings on not just one, but two of her fellow survivors.
Kate arrived at the meeting point, noticing she wasn't the last to arrive. "All set, Mr. Impatient," she said, looking a little smug about not being the last after the way Spencer had given her and Jack attitude for wasting his time. As if they didn't have anything but time.

"Come on, I'll help you get some things together for the trip."
"Thanks," Gwen told Jasmine as she placed a couple bottles of water and pieces of fruit in her backpack. Outdoor ventures were never her strong suit, but Spencer had boasted that it would be a short trip to the cockpit and back. She slipped the bag over her shoulders and prepared to go meet up with him, Kate, and Gabe.
"Alright, I'll be back soon. And if you see Sebastian, tell him..." she began but trailed off. Tell him what? Sorry for confessing my deep psychological issues with my estranged family over a lunch of bananas and water, let's do it again some time? Maybe she'd been wrong and already invested too much emotion in something that wasn't as real as she'd hoped. "Tell him I headed off into the jungle with some hot American men and he shouldn't wait up," she finally said with a smirk, knowing that Jasmine would find the most articulate way to relay the message.
Gwen then turned and completed the steps to meet up with the rest of the group. "Right, ready when you are, fearless leader," she informed Spencer.

"Tell you what," "First thing when we get back, I'll find you and fill you in on all the boring details."
"I'm gonna hold you to that," Gently pointing a finger her way, Jack nodded in Kate's direction as she began to move past him. Already bothered by the fact that she was going on a jungle escapade without him and there was nothing he could do to stop her, his tone appeared to be holding her accountable for keeping her word on every detail that would go down.
"See you in a few."
At Kate's touch, Jack's smooth grin created creasing wrinkles around the frame of his face and eyes before the pang of concern that grew within him began to show in his complexion as she walked off. He was left frozen in place for a few lingering moments as he waited to see if Kate would give one final glace back at him before joining the others.
"Be safe," In his disappointment, Jack muttered with gentle care as if he was still speaking with Kate directly before attempting to distract himself from the present conflicts at hand by making his rounds and tending to the other survivors on the beach.

Late morning and the rest of the day passes.
It is now late evening. Most people have already settled down for the night.
The crew from the main survivors who trekked out to the cockpit decided to camp there until morning and a group of Others is descending upon the Tailies' camp.

It was late. Most had already retired to their shelters, Sarah included, so I sat in the peaceful quiet of the night near a fire, leg drawn up as I fiddled with the bandage on my leg.
Sarah and I had walked along the shore earlier that day, collecting sea shells as the waves lapped over our feet. A particularly enthusiastic wave had sneaked up on us, splashing to my knees and half drenching Sarah. It had sent us into a fit of laughter in our far delayed action of running from the water.
What had been funny at the time was now annoying. Jack had instructed me to avoid ocean water, knowing that until my wound closed up enough, it would irritate it. I'd washed the wound right away but the bandage had been soaked with ocean water and I wasn't scheduled to have my wound checked over and redressed until tomorrow morning. The bandage, though dry now, was what was irritating me. Not only did the tape no longer want to stick, but the bandage itself was irritating my wound with the salt and sand particles of the ocean still trapped in it. I hated to use up precious supplies but it would probably be best to keep a spare bandage handy just in case.
Speaking of spares, Jack had left plenty of bandaging material in his old tent which was now, unfortunately, Sawyer's tent. Giving up on the thing in frustration, I pulled it free of my wound and tossed it in the fire, then poured a little more water onto a clean cloth and patted the wound free of sand and salt again. I pulled my gaze from my leg to glance to the side toward said tent in the near distance. Though fairly dark, I could make out the figure in the open front of the shelter and didn't see any movement.
I was weighing my options. I could be in and out fairly quickly, having seen where Jack had placed the bandages and tape, but if he woke up, I'd be exchanging one irritant for another. I looked down at my wound again. There was no way it was ready to risk sleeping without it. With only a small towel between myself and the sand, a simple turn in my sleep could land my leg in the sand. It was the shuddering thought in my overactive imagination of sand flees or other critters feasting on my wound in the middle of the night that convinced me to take the risk.
I crossed my arms over my upraised legs and rested my head on them, facing the shelter and patiently watching and waiting. I saw the figure in the tent shift position, looking as if he'd turned his back toward the supplies which gave me the slightest raise in hope. I watched and waited a good ten more minutes and with no further movement in the tent, got to my feet and quietly walked toward the right of the tent.

***Kate and Gabe enter from F3 - Jungle Outskirts of Survivor's Camp***
"Uh, yeah, Scott is totally taller," "Which means he's on my team if we ever find a volleyball and a net." "I wouldn't waste too much time on it, though," "In fact, I've been meaning to talk to you about your lack of productivity. You should really pitch in and do more around the camp, Kate. Everybody agrees."
As they broke through the line of trees back onto the sand of the camp, Kate was laughing over the accusation that was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum of reality, mostly out of finding humor in it but with just a twinge of embarrassment mixed in. It could easily be mistaken for her having found a kind of underlying form of compliment or appreciation hidden somewhere in the good-natured joking for her seemingly non-stop dedication to doing all she could to help. In reality, it was this self conscious feeling that the few people who'd made the observation had seen deeper and knew one or both of the actual reasons she kept pushing herself. She just never knew which. Did they see that she had a problem staying in one place--Jack had called her out on that one--or did they see she was trying to keep herself distracted for reasons other than their situation?
Pretending as if those other two reasons did not exist, Kate heaved a sigh, acting like a teenager being pestered for the millionth time to do her chores. "Yah, yah. I'll try to do better," she said, giving that eyeroll that contradicted the promise. She grinned over at him as they neared the piles that had been reduced to a few twigs.
Speaking of distractions, Kate found herself still in good spirits. She'd had fun working and chatting alongside Gabe even with the topic of the fugitive having been brought up. It was just her luck that she'd ended up on a plane with so many intriguing men. And good looking, to top it off. She'd learned a hard lesson once already. Had she bumped into any of them on the main lands, she'd had quickly hightailed it to a new place. Trapped with no escape left her worried about stumbling into another Kevin situation. She wasn't sure she could handle finding that kind of happiness again only to have it once again torn away when rescue arrived.
"Thanks for helping. I actually had--" As if perfectly lining up with their previous topic, Scott, or perhaps Steve, jogged over and interrupted her.
"Oh good. I was wondering when we'd get more firewood." Rather than helping her unload the armful of firewood, Scott/Steve grabbed a couple branches and pulled them free from her arms, calling a, "Thanks!" over his shoulder as he retreated just as quickly.
"...fun." Kate finished flatly. 'Jerk,' she mentally sent to his retreating back as she opened her arms and let the rest fall unceremoniously to the ground. Her attention went to assesses what was causing the minor annoyance of a stinging sensation on her forearm as she spoke to Gabe once again. "Which one was that one, 'cause I'll definitely be able to keep it straight after that," she asked, pinpointing the cause of the problem. Great. The inconsiderate jerk had given her a splinter. Holding out her arm, palm up, she divided her attention between Gabe and working the splinter out.
